Akan's Named Jamaica?
Akan's Named Jamaica?
Assin Manso: Across the country and particularly along the coast, evidence of the European presence and the Slave Trade in the 14th century abound. And just as Ghana bears the marks of colonialism, many parts of the Americas, Europe and elsewhere also carry proof of aspects of the culture of the enslaved Africans, who until their sojourn, knew no other way of life. From the Ancestral River Park at Assin Manso in the Central Region, the story is told, for example, of how the Caribbean country of Jamaica was named by Akan slaves.- published: 13 Aug 2013

One of Us (Icimizden Biri)
“That man is a farmer. That man is a salesman. He looks like a drunkard. He works a lot. He looks very concerned. He is a gentleman. I think he is a fisherman, isn’t he? He warns the passers by. But I don’t get the dog. Isn’t that a dog? Maybe he is a hunter. I don’t understand that part.”
One of Us by Ilgin Aksoy, Gamze Akan and Sengul Moral portrays the people of Eskisehir as they talk about their local hero, “that man”, explaining in a series of interviews what he does and why he does it. Doing that, they all give hints about their personalities, their community, their environment and the city in which they live in.
Produced by MODE Istanbul in 2011 as part of the Youth MODE “Local Heroes” Workshop in Eskisehir/Turkey.

Life/Distraction
Sound is a part of a life whether it is a song from the world class artist, a sound of wind blowing, a singing bird, the sound of nature, or even a sound of celebration. These are the sounds we want to hear; however, in reality, there are some sounds that we wish we could not hear them. They are noise pollution, which do almost no good to human, emotionally.
Sometimes these noises distract us when ideas are about to be formed, but sometimes they also help us to go out of the normal path that people like to take. Life/distraction will oppositely turn pictures into sounds instead of the usual imagination people have when they heard something.
John cage (1912-1992)
An american artist who expertise in avant-garde field after the world war, is recognized as one of the most influential artists in the 20th century. All of his works are mostly experiment of sounds that is beyond imagination which break the boundary of how people used to work with sound. One of his most famous work is 4'33 from the year 1952, he had the symphony orchestra performing nothing but silence for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. All of his works are made from the love that he had for music.
Water walk (John Cage, 1959)
A masterpiece that combined the sound that we heard in our daily life whether it is from the rice cooker, bathtub, radio, etc which are considered as disturbing noises. This is one of his experiment to find a new way to produce 'music'.

- What is Sukebeningen Project?
We present inter media art of characteristically Japanese eroticism. We explore the cultural differences in the conception of eroticism between The Netherlands and Japan through music, dance, electronics, fine arts, and olfactory art.
- The name "Sukebeningen"
The name of the project "Sukebeningen" comes from the beach Scheveningen in Den Haag, The Netherlands. Japanese pronounce the word "Scheveningen" /sukebeningen/. The word "sukebe" means somethig like "lecherous" or "naughty," and "ningen" means human being. So "Sukebeningen" means a naughty person. In Japan, therefore, Scheveningen is well-known as a beach with a funny-sounding name. One might say the name is ambiguous: for Dutch, it refers to the beautiful beach; for Japanese, it refers to a naught person. For both peoples, the name of the project is very familiar.
- Why eroticism?
One's conception of eroticism reveals his or her sexual sensitivity at a very personal level. At the same time, eroticism reflects the taste of a people at the cultural level. Indeed, eroticism is an important aspect of the cultural aesthetics. Everyone is interested in eroticism, and how different cultures conceive of it. But, it is also a sensitive topic, and it can be difficult to talk about it. We want people to enjoy our works personally and casually, although at the same time we deal with eroticism honestly and seriously.
