David Holt (musician)
David Holt (born October 15, 1946 in Gatesville, Texas) performs and preserves traditional American music and stories. A four time Grammy Award winner, Holt plays ten acoustic instruments and has released recordings of traditional mountain music and southern folktales, hosts Riverwalk, a jazz program on public radio; Folkways, a television program on folk music and culture, Great Scenic Railway Journeys and North Carolina Mountain Treasures on North Carolina public television.
Holt performed with Doc Watson. Holt performs wearing his trademark fedora, preferring vintage examples from the 1930s and 1940s.
Holt and his wife, Ginny, have two children. His son worked for NBC in New York City. His daughter died in 1989 at age 10 following a car crash.

For over three decades, Davids passion for traditional music and culture has fueled a successful performing and recording career. He has earned four Grammy Awards and performed and recorded with many of his mentors including Doc Watson, Grandpa Jones, Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff and Chet Atkins. Today he tours the country perfoming solo, with Doc Watson and with his band The Lightning Bolts.

Award-winning performer, educator, and recording artist Laura Boosinger offered a workshop and concert of traditional music from the Southern Appalachian region at RCC on Nov. 9. Laura's concerts offer a step back to a simpler time, awakening memories for the old and gently instilling important cultural lessons for her audience. Boosinger conducted a workshop on "Ballads of North Carolina" in the RCC auditorium. That evening, she performed in concert with RCC's own string band, Campus Tradition. Key of G Tuning: gDGBD My cover of the old-time tune, Black Eyed Susie, played clawhammer style. As I listen to the playback, I see that at the speed, I'm missing the pull-offs. Still, it's a tune I really enjoy. I really like the way David Holt has covered this in recordings with Josh Goforth and the late, great Doc Watson. Once I get it cleaned up, I may add some vocals. -

Boosinger got her start at Warren Wilson College where she studied old-time banjo and traditional music with David Holt. After her graduation, she began performing with the Luke Smathers Band from Haywood County and has recorded a tribute to her mentors, "Let Me Linger." On Nov. 9, Dave Smathers (the nephew of Luke Smathers) joined Laura on stage. Smathers regularly performs with Campus Tradition, a string band composed of current and former employees at RCC.
Boosinger frequently performs with David Holt and the Lightning Bolts and has released recordings with legendary guitarist George Shuffler and the young multi-instrumentalist Josh Goforth. In addition to "Let Me Linger," her recordings include "Mountain Treasures," "Down the Road," and "Most of All."
"Each year, the campus Musicians' Guild brings in a notable performer to talk about some aspect of performing and musical technique," said Lee Dodson, the group's advisor. "We're delighted to have Laura Boosinger share her talents as a vocalist and as an old-time banjo, dulcimer, guitar, and autoharp player with us."
