Ukraine Crisis: Obama Presses Putin To Stem Flow Of Arms

US President Barack Obama has urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to stop the flow of weapons into Ukraine and halt support for separatists.

The White House said that in the phone call Mr Obama warned of further sanctions if Moscow failed to act.

The Kremlin says Mr Putin urged direct talks between Kiev and the rebels in the east. Russia denies arming them.

The separatists have said they will observe a truce initiated by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The week-long ceasefire - part of a 15-point peace plan announced by Mr Poroshenko last week - is due to expire on Friday.

Late on Monday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters: \

June 24, 2014 - Only days after an explosion in the Lebanese Bekaa shattered the calm which had prevailed in the Arab country for months, another bomb rocked the entrance to the southern suburbs of Beirut causing casualties.
The explosion happened near an army checkpoint and a cafe where football fans were watching the World Cup. After suffering consecutive defeats in Syria, Takfiri militants swore to avenge their losses especially in Shia areas known for their loyalty to Lebanon\'s resistance movement Hezbollah. A Hezbollah MP told Press TV that these bombings are a result of state sponsored terrorism. Lebanon has been the scene of numerous car bomb and rocket attacks by Takfiri militants and insurgents operating in Syria which have diminished since the Syrian Army and Hezbollah fighters took control of Syrian areas at the Lebanese border. Despite the fact that today\'s explosion can score no political Points, what seems to be a fresh round of bombings by Takfiri militants perhaps serves as an attempt to merely put Lebanon in a state of chaos after having somewhat achieved that goal in Iraq.

A Cairo court has provoked international outrage with its controversial sentencing of a number of journalists. Charged with aiding the Muslim Brotherhood and reporting false news, the court took just ten minutes to find three Al Jazeera journalists guilty, sentencing them to seven, seven and ten years respectively. Eleven others, including British journalist Sue Turton, were tried in absentia and sentenced to ten years.

The decision comes a day after another Egyptian court confirmed the death sentences against the leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and 182 of his supporters, causing serious fears for free speech and democracy in Egypt.

On the eve of the Al Jazeera conviction, the US announced the release of 575 million dollars worth of military aid to the Egyptian government. But what does this mean for Egypt? And what should the international community do now?

Jonathan Steele is joined in the studio by Peter Oborne, the Chief Political Columnist of the Daily Telegraph and Mohamed Soudan, former Foreign Affairs Spokesperson for the Muslim Brotherhood; and on Skype is Andrew Smith, the media co-ordinator of the Campaign Against Arms Trade.

Four Western Iraqi Towns Fall To Advancing ISIS Militants - Iraq Struggling Against Isis Militants, Say Diplomats - ISIS seizes four towns on a highway from Syria to Baghdad, elevating fears that the Sunni militants could now march to the Iraqi capital.

Iraq\'s government is struggling in its battle against militants, diplomats and politicians have told the BBC.

Fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) said they seized a border crossing to Syria and two towns in north-west Iraq on Saturday.

Correspondents say Isis appears to be better trained, better equipped and more experienced than the army.

The Sunni extremists attacked the city of Mosul in June and have since seized large swathes of territory across Iraq.

There is deep pessimism in Baghdad about the way the government\'s war against Isis is going, says the BBC\'s World Affairs Editor John Simpson, who has been speaking to senior politicians and diplomats in the capital.

The Iraqi air force ran out of American Hellfire missiles two weeks ago, and in any case only has two Cessna planes capable of firing Hellfires, he adds.

Experts say Isis has established secure safe havens, including some in neighbouring Syria, which will be difficult to target.

A conscript soldier who killed five comrades in a grenade and gun attack over the weekend is still on the run after exchanging fire with soldiers late last night close to the North Korean border.
The soldier, identified as a sergeant with the family name Lim, was discovered hiding near a school some 10 kilometers from his base, the soldier opened fire on troops, wounding a platoon leader in the arm.
Currently, the area is under lockdown and all residents have been evacuated.
The military says troops have been ordered to \'shoot to kill\' unless the fugitive soldier surrenders.
Although the motive for the shooting still remains unknown,... officials say Lim was on the list of soldiers that needed special attention as he had struggled to adapt to military life.

Should Obama Go to Tehran? How a U.S.-Iran "Grand Bargain" Could Help the Crisis in Iraq

http://www.democracynow.org - As the United Nations reveals more than 1,075 Iraqis have been killed so far this month, the Obama administration has promised Iraq "intense and sustained" support against the Sunni uprising overtaking large parts of the country. Secretary of State John Kerry made the pledge in a surprise visit to Baghdad while imploring Iraqi leaders to adopt inclusiveness in a forming a new government by a July 1 deadline. Kerry's visit to Baghdad followed stops in Egypt and Jordan, followed by Brussels and Paris in the coming days. But our guest Phyllis Bennis argues Kerry's travel calendar ignores the most important stop he could make: Tehran. The United States and Iran are fighting a common enemy in Iraq's Sunni militants. But despite much speculation and ongoing nuclear talks, there is little sign the two sides are approaching meaningful engagement on Iraq and the threat of regional conflict it is inflaming. A senior fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, Bennis is the author the article, "Don't Go Back to Iraq! Five steps the U.S. can take in Iraq without going back to war," and of several books, including "Ending the Iraq War: A Primer." This video is an excerpt of the segment. Ukraine Crisis: Obama Presses Putin To Stem Flow Of Arms US President Barack Obama has urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to stop the flow of weapons into Ukraine and halt support for separatists. Late on Monday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters: "The president spoke to President Putin and once again urged him to support peace instead of allowing the provision of arms and materiel across the border and continuing support for militants and separatists who are further destabilising the situation in Ukraine." The explosion happened near an army checkpoint and a cafe where football fans were watching the World Cup. After suffering consecutive defeats in Syria, Takfiri militants swore to avenge their losses especially in Shia areas known for their loyalty to Lebanon's resistance movement Hezbollah. Despite the fact that today's explosion can score no political Points, what seems to be a fresh round of bombings by Takfiri militants perhaps serves as an attempt to merely put Lebanon in a state of chaos after having somewhat achieved that goal in Iraq.

Iraq's government is struggling in its battle against militants, diplomats and politicians have told the BBC. There is deep pessimism in Baghdad about the way the government's war against Isis is going, says the BBC's World Affairs Editor John Simpson, who has been speaking to senior politicians and diplomats in the capital. The military says troops have been ordered to 'shoot to kill' unless the fugitive soldier surrenders. Although the motive for the shooting still remains unknown,... officials say Lim was on the list of soldiers that needed special attention as he had struggled to adapt to military life.
