Dancing on The World's Most Dangerous Hike™ (Mt. Hua Shan)
Many have dubbed Mt. Hua Shan's 华山 "plank walk" the most dangerous hike in the world. Cliff walking on Hua Shan actually is not dangerous, just scary if you are morbidly afraid of heights. I do not like heights, but I was perfectly comfortable on the cliffside path... so much so that we had an impromptu dance session. The most dangerous part of the plank walk is the number of people on the planks at once. We travelled there in the summer and were on the trail early, two factors led to an increased number of people on the planks. It is one of China's five sacred Taoist mountains, so tourist and pilgrim traffic will always be relatively high. Since it is a one-way path, you must walk around people or patiently wait for people to finish coming down the "ladder." All in all, while the plank walk's 1500 tall cliffs is a great experience that produces mind-blowing pictures, it is not the main reason to visit the sacred Mount Hua Shan. Hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it is like to climb Mt. Hua Shan!

Mt. Huashan Plank Path
Video from the cliffside plank path on Mt. Huashan outside Xi'an, China. The path is on a flat cliff face that drops for many hundreds of feet - I was completely freaking out. Only when I got to the end did I find that it's a one way path, so you have to turn around and go back, all while passing people on that same path!

Hiking Huashan - China's Sacred Mountain
In August 2010, I climbed Mt. Huashan (华山) with my friend Dan. Huashan is one of China's "sacred peaks," making it a very popular tourist destination for Chinese and foreigners alike. Not far from Xi'an, Huashan is a highly developed mountain with hiking paths, food and drink vendors and even hotels reaching the highest points on the four main peaks. Previously a favorite venue for Taoist hermits to come meditate, Huashan is now easily accessible from several hiking paths and even a cable car that runs up to the North peak. As such, it can be quite crowded, which can be a bit distracting from the gorgeous view.

Plank Walk - Huashan Mountain
This is the second time I have visited Hua Shan mountain located near the city of Xi'an. Luckily this time it wasn't windy so I was able to traverse the amazing plank walk.
PS. Many apologies for swearing in video
Before reaching the planks it is necessary to walk along a narrow ledge and then climb down a near vertical chain ladder on the cliff side. For safety reasons a harness must be worn which has attached to it 2 clips. One or both clips are connected to a series of thick metal cables that run all the way down the cliff side, along the plank walk and beyond.
So all in all the so called "Most Dangerous Hike in the World" is actually quite a safe hike. As long as you don't do anything stupid that is :-)

Mt. Hua (Huashan) Plank Walk
This is a small clip of the famous plank walk on Mt. Hua, located in the Shaanxi Province of China.
The path itself is located just below the highest of the five main peaks, namely the South Peak.
It is certainly one of the most spectacular parts of what has been known as "The Most Dangerous Trail in the World" with 1km of free fall just beneath the wooden boards.
The plank walk was earlier used to reach a small plateau where one could seek forgiveness, but in the later years it has become more of a tourist attraction.
The video is filmed by the fearless Alverg.

The Vast Sky Plank Walk at Huashan/Hua Mountain 华山
Something a bit scary and a lot fun two girls did on Huashan/Hua Mountain (华山) in Shaanxi province, China.
The Vast Sky Plank Walk is often refereed as the world's most dangerous hike. (Safety harness have only been used since 2005, though). You have to climb a ladder that's nothing more steel rods driven into a crack in the rock, and walk on planks a foot wide along the edge of a cliff dropping thousands of meters, and in places put trust in footholds carved into the rock.
Its more fun than scary!
Hua Mountain is the western mountain of China's Five Sacred Taoist Mountains, and has a long history of religious significance. Originally classified as having three peaks, in modern times the mountain is classified as five main peaks, of which the highest is the South Peak at 2154.9m.

Mt Huashan
Chez and Dad conquer Mt. Huashan. Mt. Huashan is about 120km west Xian in China. It has 5 separate peaks shaped like a lotus. 'Hua' measn lotus and 'Shan' means mountain. This video done on the 7/7/2012 is our trek up the mountain. The challenge was to do all 5 peaks in a day. We did it in about 5 1/2 hours all up. This video does not include the famous plank walk. To see that go to http://youtu.be/EK_M6daKjfc
This video shows you what it is really like to get to and climb this mountain. We recommend to take a guide. Our guide, Lulu was fantastic!! However we don't want to climb any stairs again!

Mt Huashan - Climbed Up Steep Stairs (Day 1 - 1650)
Day 1 - It's been 3 hours since we've started hiking, and we weren't even halfway to the peak. We exhausted our physical body and focused our mind. Under our short breath we murmured 'Nearly there, one more step, come on!'. The steps are becoming crazier the higher we go and we thought the mountain would give us some forgiveness. We were wrong. The higher we went the harsher it gets. Some of the 'safety' features were merely a metal chain attached on the side of the mountain wall and uneven steps, sometimes climbing nearly 90 degree angle. Also wet steps. We've managed to take some beautiful photos along the way.
Participants: David B., Peter X. T., Steven K., Bram V. T., Andrei S. & myself.
We travelled to Mt. Huashan just off Xi'an in China. The mountain is known for its horrendous and 'dangerous' hike to the top. Recommended only for the strong hearted, mentally prepared, healthy individuals. Seeming we fit the criteria, the 6 of us decided to tackle this adventure. Truly remarkable experience, definitely was and will be one of the most memorable memory in our life time.

Note for friends: I will start posting up all the videos from our travels here. Pass it on to your friends if you wish for. I thought this will be easier to view than facebook. Enjoy =).
