Shock Doctrine in Japan: Shinzo Abe's Rightward Shift to Militarism, Secrecy in Fukushima's Wake
http://www.democracynow.org - Democracy Now! is broadcasting from Tokyo, Japan, today in the first of three special broadcasts. At a critical time for Japan and the region, we begin our coverage looking at the country's rightward political shift under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was re-elected just over a year ago. As head of the Liberal Democratic Party, Abe is known as a conservative hawk who has pushed nationalistic and pro-nuclear policies. In December, he visited the controversial Yasukuni war shrine, which honors Japanese soldiers who died in battle, including several war criminals who were tried by the International Military Tribunal after World War II. The visit sparked outrage from China and South Korea, who consider the shrine a symbol of Japanese militarism, and its refusal to atone for atrocities committed in the first half of the 20th century. We speak about Japan's increasingly pro-nuclear, nationalistic stance with Koichi Nakano, professor at Sophia University in Tokyo and director of the Institute of Global Concern. ARIRANG NEWS 14:00 (THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT FOR ARIRANG NEWS THAT AIRED ON 26 Dec 2013- 14:00 KST.) Title: Arirang News Title Title: Opening It is midnight in Washington, 6 in London, and 2 on a Friday evening here in Seoul. I'm Moon Conn-young. Let's get a check of the main stories we're following at this hour. Title: Headlines 1 Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pays a visit to a controversial war shrine on his first anniversary since taking office -- in a move sure to infuriate Japan's neighbors,... including Korea. Title: Headlines 2 In a pleasantly surprising move, Korea's ruling and main opposition parties agree to pass key bills next week,... including bills for the 2014 budget and reforming the nation's spy agency. Title: Headlines 3 As the nation's railway workers' strike continues for the 18th day -- unprecedented in length -- state-run rail operator KORAIL says it will hire 6-hundred-60 new workers. The head of KORAIL is set to visit a temple where union leaders are seeking refuge... just about now. Title: Japanese PM Shinzo Abe visits controversial Yasukuni war shrine Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a visit to the highly controversial Yasukuni war shrine in Tokyo on this Thursday morning. His move is expected to strain Japan's already tense relations with Seoul and Beijing, both of which see it as a symbol of Tokyo's unwillingness to repent for its wartime wrongdoing. Our Han Da-eun starts us off. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a visit to the Yasukuni war shrine in Tokyo on Thursday morning to mark the anniversary of his first year in office. This is the first visit to the shrine by a sitting prime minister since Junichiro Koizumi's visit in 2006. State-run broadcaster NHK and other Japanese media outlets aired the visit live in reports beginning at 11:30 a.m. local time. The Yasukuni shrine honors two-and-a-half million Japanese war dead,... including some convicted war criminals. Abe had previously refrained from visiting the shrine for fear of further damaging regional ties, sending cash and other donations instead. But the possibility of his visiting has always lingered,... due to his strong nationalism and hawkish foreign policies. His move is almost certain to worsen Japan's already tense relations with Korea and China,... which have denounced past Yasukuni visits, saying it reflects Japan's unwillingness to acknowledge its past wrongdoing. Korea was quick to respond to the visit. The Korean ambassador to Japan, Lee Byung-ki, lodged a complaint with the Japanese government,... saying Abe's visit is an attempt to justify Japan's wartime atrocities and that it's unacceptable. The Korean foreign ministry's deputy director-general for the Northeast Asia division, Lee Sang-deok , also expressed his deep regret about the visit to the deputy chief of the Japanese Embassy, Takashi Kurai , via telephone. Seoul's foreign ministry will release an official statement criticizing Abe's move later this afternoon. Han Da-eun, Arirang News.- published: 26 Dec 2013

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has delivered a keynote speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue. He is the first Japanese leader to do so at the gathering. Abe said Japan supported solving disputes through negotiation and that the country would never condone attempts to change the status quo by force. But he also said his government would provide 10 Japanese-made patrol vessels to the Philippine coast guard and argued that Japan's pacifist constitution must be updated.- published: 30 May 2014

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Yasukuni Shrine
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Yasukuni Shrine
On December 26, 2013 the prime minister of Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, a Shinto shrine in Tokyo, Japan. This visit by the Prime Minister of Japan to a shrine in Tokyo erupted in complaints from South Korea and China. It seems like some people in South Korea and China awarded themselves the authority to dictate to the people in Japan what places they are not allowed to visit in Japan. In other those in South Korea and China who feel they have this authority are absolute idiots. The Yasukuni Shinto shrine is dedicated to the soldiers and others who died on behalf of Japan, registering near two and a half million names enshrined dating back to 1867. A visit to this shrine by foreigners and notable Japanese brings with it scathing criticism from some neighboring nations. Their complaint is out of the two and a half million spirits honored at the Yasukuni Shrine; around one thousand were convicted as war criminals by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE or known as Tokyo Trails or Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal). Should be noted the legitimacy of tribunal is in question by many. Here is what is interesting: During World War Two Japan occupied around twenty-four nations and battled around twelve Allied nations. Out of the twenty-four occupied and twelve Allied nations, only two nations (China and South Korea) object to any official visitation to the Yasukuni Shrine. ARIRANG NEWS 20:00 (THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT FOR ARIRANG NEWS THAT AIRED ON 26 Dec 2013- 20:00 KST.) Title: Arirang News Title Arirang News Title Title: Opening Good evening... You are watching Arirang News at 8. It's Thursday... December 26th here in Korea. Live from Seoul..., I'm Yoo Ji-hae. Title: Japanese PM Shinzo Abe visits controversial Yasukuni war shrine We begin this evening with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's controversial visit to a war shrine... that honors the country's war dead. His surprise move... has infuriated neighboring countries... like Korea and China... prompting them to lodge strong complaints... as they regard it... as an attempt to justify Tokyo's wartime atrocities. Our Han Da-eun has our top story. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe marked the anniversary of his first year in office by visiting the Yasukuni war shrine in Tokyo on Thursday morning. It's the first time a sitting prime minister has visited the controversial site since Junichiro Koizumi's visit in 2006. The Yasukuni shrine honors two-and-a-half million Japanese war dead,... including some convicted war criminals. Abe had previously steered clear of the shrine for fear of further damaging regional ties, choosing instead to send donations. But the possibility of a visit has always lingered... due to the prime minister's strong nationalism and hawkish foreign policies. Abe told reporters on his way out... that he was paying respects to those who sacrificed their lives for Japan, and that he had no intention of upsetting the people of Korea or China. He added that he hoped to have a chance to explain his actions to the leaders of both neighboring countries. The trip is certain to worsen Japan's already soured relations with Korea and China, both of which were quick to respond. Korea's culture minister Yoo Jin-ryong called Abe's behavior "anachronistic." "The Korean government can't help but express its deep regret and anger over Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit, in defiance of the concerns of Japan's neighbors. The Yasukuni shrine harbors war criminals and eulogizes Japan's imperialism." Yoo added Japan should acknowledge its past wrongdoing and build trust with its neighbors, starting with a sincere apology. Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kyou Hyun summoned Takashi Kurai, the deputy chief of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul... to relay Seoul's concerns. China's foreign ministry also condemned Abe's visit in a statement, while the U.S. expressed disappointment, saying it could escalate regional tensions.
