Life as an Illegal Immigrant in Greece
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Greece has always been a gateway for immigrants searching for what they assumed would be a better life in Europe. But many of those who've crossed illegally into Greece have found that they have traded one bad situation for another. Refugees from war-torn countries like Syria and Afghanistan are finding themselves stuck in a country that is not only battling an economic crisis but is witnessing a rise in anti-immigrant violence, exemplified by the a nationalist political party known as the Golden Dawn. VICE News' Alex Miller travelled from Athens to the western port of Patras to find out what it is like to be trapped in a country you never wanted to be in in the first place. Anti-Fascist Fury: Protest against Golden Dawn turns violent in Greece
A mass anti-fascist rally has turned violent in Athens after furious protesters tried to storm the headquarters of the far-right Golden Dawn party. The anger was sparked by the murder of a left-wing rapper last week by a sympathizer of the neo-Nazi party. It's not going to be easy for the government to crack down on the neo-Nazis as we've been hearing from the author of 'The Greek Crisis in the Media'. Demonstrators will be barred from areas including Syntagma Square, the focus of recent anti-austerity protests. EU finance ministers are expected to sign off the next instalment of Greece's bailout when they meet in the city later. Greece, the current chair of the EU presidency, continues to struggle with high debt and unemployment Discussions at Tuesday and Wednesday's meetings will include Greece's austerity programme and market reforms demanded under the terms of its international bailouts. Renewed confidence Ministers are expected to unlock about 8bn euros (£6.6bn, $11.bn) in loan money - one of the last Greece will get from the eurozone. The International Monetary Fund will continue to pay its instalments for some months. It comes after the Greek parliament narrowly passed a raft of reforms, mainly to open up retail sectors to competition. The meeting comes at a time of renewed confidence in Greece as the country's economy looks to be recovering, says the BBC's Mark Lowen in Athens. Greece has wiped out its deficit, except for interest on its debt, and is forecast to exit six years of recession this year, our correspondent says. But unions and left-wing groups had called for mass protests on Tuesday. They say people are still suffering under the austerity measures implemented under the bailout terms. Unemployment is running at 27%, and many Greeks are still feeling the effects of tax rises and spending cuts. It is unclear whether protesters will attempt to enter prohibited areas and try to reach Syntagma Square outside parliament, which has become the customary focus for rallies. Athens has enforced protests bans in the past, including when German Chancellor Angela Merkel made high-profile visits. GREECE NEWS:Greek Neo-Nazi Leader Jailed Before Trial
The leader of Greece's Golden Dawn neo-Nazi party Nikos Michaloliakos was placed in pre-trial detention early on Thursday after delivering a lengthy testimony in court, the state-run Athens News Agency said. Michaloliakos is "accused of running a criminal organisation", according to the agency, as Greek authorities move to dismantle the group after the shock murder of an anti-fascist musician on September 18. Local media reported that magistrates further decided that a local Golden Dawn leader, allegedly involved in the murder of hip-hop artist Pavlos Fyssas, should also be held in detention. Some 100 of the group's supporters had gathered outside the court, carrying Greek flags and chanting "Blood, honour, Golden Dawn," when Michaloliakos arrived to offer his testimony shortly before 1630 GMT on Wednesday. As the 56-year-old mathematician and former disciple of Greek dictator George Papadopoulos entered the building, they applauded. On Wednesday, four Golden Dawn lawmakers were charged with belonging to a criminal organisation, in the first ever indictment against neo-Nazi PMs in Greece.Three were conditionally released and only one was placed in pre-trial detention, as police reportedly found he had spoken to members of a gang that ambushed Fyssas on the night of his murder. The conditional release was seen as surprising given the gravity of the charges, but justice officials later stressed that release did not mean acquittal."My recommendation to everyone is not to rush. We do not have any conclusive judicial ruling (yet)," warned Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos. The three freed lawmakers left the court in a combative mood, insulting and threatening reporters. Golden Dawn was the country's third most popular party until Fyssas' murder sparked nationwide protests and a government crackdown on the group long accused of attacking immigrants, charges that it denies. Overall, some two dozen people including six of the organisation's lawmakers, lower-ranking party members and three police officers, face charges ranging from attempted homicide and murder to illegal arms possession and belonging to a criminal organisation. Golden Dawn denies all the accusations and says it is the victim of political persecution designed to stem its rise ahead of local elections next year. Once a fringe party, Golden Dawn capitalised on growing public discontent in a country hard hit by the economic crisis and was first elected to parliament last year with nearly seven percent of the vote.
