-lock

The suffix -lock in Modern English survives only in wedlock. It descends from Old English -lรกc which was more productive, carrying a meaning of "action or proceeding, state of being, practice, ritual". As a noun, Old English lรกc means "play, sport", deriving from an earlier meaning of "sacrificial ritual or hymn" (Proto-Germanic *laikaz). A putative term for a "hymn to the gods" (*ansu-laikaz) in early Germanic paganism is attested only as a personal name, Oslac.

Suffix

The Old English nouns in -lรกc include brรฝdlรกc "nuptials", beadolรกc, feohtlรกc and heaรฐolรกc "warfare", hวฝmedlรกc and wiflรกc "carnal intercourse", rรฉaflรกc "robbery", wรญtelรกc "punishment", wrรณhtlรกc "calumny" besides the wedlรกc "pledge-giving", also "nuptials" ancestral to wedlock. A few compounds appear only in Middle English, thus dweomerlak "occult practice", ferlac "terror", shendlac "disgrace", treulac "faithfulness", wohlac "wooing", all of them extinct by the onset of Early Modern English. The earliest words taking the -lรกc suffix were probably related to warfare, comparable to the -pleศa (-play) suffix found in swordplay.

Sรขngeorgiu de Pฤƒdure (Hungarian: Erdล‘szentgyรถrgy, Hungarian pronunciation: [หˆษ›rdรธหsษ›nษŸรธrษŸ], meaning "St. George of the Forest"; German: Sankt Georgen auf der Heide) is a town in MureลŸ County, Romania.

Bezid (Bรถzรถd), Bezidu Nou (Bรถzรถdรบjfalu) and Loลฃu (Lรณc) villages are administratively part of the town.

History

The first written record of the town is preserved in a papal tithe applotment list from 1333 in which mention is made of a priest โ€žde Sancto Georgioโ€ who paid a sum of 6 dinars to the neighboring diocese. In 1347, a man named Erdล‘, count of the Szรฉkelys, and the sons of Erdล‘ of Erdล‘szentgyรถrgy were mentioned. In 1442, Anna Herepei, wife of Erdล‘ of Erdewzenthgergh is written about. The village was the estate of Francis I Rรกkรณczi, prince of Transylvania. The Rรฉdey castle was built in 1647. In 1788, Pรฉter Bodor was born here. In 1818-1809, the Rรฉdey castle was rebuilt. In 1913, the official Hungarian name of the village is Erdล‘szentgyรถrgy.

Its Romanian name was originally Erdeo-Sรขngeorgiu, after 1919 Sรฎngeorgiul de Pฤƒdure which later was changed by Romanian authorities to the current official name.
