A convict is "a person found guilty of a crime and sentenced by a court" or "a person serving a sentence in prison", sometimes referred to in slang as simply a "con". Convicts are often called prisoners or inmates. Persons convicted and sentenced to non-custodial sentences often are not termed "convicts". Ex-convict (or short: ex-con) is a common way of referring to a person who has been released from prison.
The legal label of "ex-convict" has much wider lifelong implications, so the person may suffer long-term handicaps and social stigma, including restricting access to certain categories of employment. In the Australian context, the Federal government generally will not employ an ex-convict, but some other state organizations may or may not have a time limit restricting employment.
The particular use of the term "convict" in the English-speaking world was to describe the huge numbers of criminals, both male and female, who clogged British gaols in the 18th and early 19th century. Their crimes would today be regarded as petty misdemeanours (stealing small items or food), or are no longer in the criminal code (such as being in debt). Most of the punishments at this time were severe, with the death penalty applied for fairly minor crimes. However, this ultimate sentence was often commuted to a lesser one, commonly for transportation (for 7 or 14 years, or for life) to the "colonies". Thus, in the British context, the term "convict" has come to refer in particular to those criminals transported overseas.
William Thomson "Will" Hay (6 December 1888 – 18 April 1949) was an English comedian, actor, film director and amateur astronomer.
He was born in Stockton-on-Tees, in north east England, to William R. Hay and his wife Elizabeth, but moved to Suffolk at an early age.
Hay was educated at Gardner Street Higher Grade School in Pendleton, a suburb of Salford — then in Lancashire, but now within Greater Manchester.
Hay was trained as an engineer and joined a firm of engineers, but at the age of 21 he gave up that profession for the stage. Starting in Manchester as a juggler, self-taught after seeing W C Fields doing it in a film, later he took up acting. He had a relatively brief screen career: by the time he made his first film he was in his mid-40s and an established music hall artist, and his last role came less than a decade later. But between 1934 and 1943 he was a prolific and popular film comedian. He was credited on several films as a writer or co-ordinator, and was arguably the dominant "author" of all the films in which he appeared, in that they were built around his persona and depended on the character and routines he had developed over years on the stage.

Hunger Has No Limit
Alexander Pearce: A Full Belly is prerequisite to all manner of good. Without that, no man knows, what hunger will make him do.
Philip Conolly: Whatever has been said and continues to be said about him, this much is true. Alexander Pearce, an Irish convict incarcerated on Sarah Island, twice managed the inconceivable, the unforgiveable and escaped.
Philip Conolly: Let the wicked forsake his way, the unrighteous man his thoughts, return unto the Lord and He will have mercy.
Philip Conolly: The world is always easier understood held at a distance, with tales of monsters and the like. This is how Alexander is remembered, not as a man. Yet few truer, words have been spoken; a full belly is prerequisite to all manner of good. Without that, no man knows what hunger will make him do.
Philip Conolly: Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. Die condemned on earth, but acceptable to God...
Philip Conolly: Alexander Pearce, this is the last Lord's day which you can expect to spend on earth. When another Sabbath morn shall dawn you will be numbered with the dead; you will be where you can no longer repent, nor seek salvation. You will then be either saved or lost; in Christian Paradise, or unending torment...
Philip Conolly: The ignominious results of disobedience to law and humanity cannot be ignored. Blood must atone blood, society requires it. Pearce's crimes are confirmed and systematic. They can't be met with leniency. Indeed they should be pursued with vengeance and made good with his death. Yet what I have seen is dreadful suffering often drives desperate men to horrific acts. This man, I prepare for the gallows, arrived here depraved, already proficient in distilling lawless habits, but here in Van Dieman's Land took succor amongst the most unprincipled people in the universe. A wicked and perverse generation addicted to adultery, blasphemy, idleness, malice, dishonesty and drunkenness. A recalcitrant amongst reprobates, Pearce was sent to Sarah Island, a place of secondary punishment. If flogging can school a man, Pearce should be principled for two thousand lashes were applied to his back, more than any man before or since. Instead he absconded. He witnessed murders, murdered himself, escaped and murdered again. He has eaten human flesh. He is a beast made mad by beatings. He will die here, in a strange land, alone, caged, having learnt nothing but pain, piss, shit, blood and death. It's inhuman from start to finish. I'm sickened by it. But yes I offer him comfort as he awaits death at His Majesty's pleasure. I do it for fear Mrs Brown.
Philip Conolly: We're Irish, We were born hungry. God spare this colony the famines of Ireland. A whole country's crops failing. Absentee landlords without a degree of mercy. Orphans. Jesus, Mary and Joseph. But hunger's never been a reason to eat another man.
Alexander Pearce: Try to kill a man, he'll either die, or put up fight. That's how it is. That's what happened.
Alexander Pearce: When it came time there was only panic. We took our bread but it was baked to rot. I had the thought we'd forage but God never put down food out there, no animals, nor anything in the ground. This is a hollow land. That's what we walked into, eight of us...

Shift Manager: And what was your name?::Koistinen: Koistinen. Just like before.
Bank Manager: [Bank manager is reviewing Koistinen's application for a small-business loan] Tell me, Koistinen... Are you some kind of comedian?::Koistinen: Why?::Bank Manager: Did you come to cheer us up? What are these papers? A trade school diploma... Did you think it will give you a loan of two hundred thousand - without any security, any guarantors?::Koistinen: I'll guarantee it myself, until the company gets going and...::Koistinen: [Interrupting him] Guarantees from trash like you are worthless.::Koistinen: But I've got an account here.::Bank Manager: I won't even take your application further. It's rejected. You're only wasting my time and yours. Go away.
Mirja: [Worried that Koistinen will squeal] He'll talk. He'll tell them about me.::Lindholm: Koistinen will never betray you. He's loyal as a dog, a sentimental fool. My genius lies in understanding that.
Mercy...

It was legal murder until a reporter and his girl dared to get the inside story!
Capt. Duncan: We have ways of making you sweat here.
Capt. Duncan: Maybe if you mess him up a little, he'll talk.
Capt. Duncan: Cold? A night in the sweat-box will fix that up.
Guard Adams: Better check to see if you've got everything that's coming to you. Should be a couple of uniforms, a rifle, billy-club, and Black Annie.::Cliff Roberts: What's Black Annie?::Guard Adams: Black Annie's a whip.::Cliff Roberts: Guess I'm all fixed then.::Guard Adams: [nodding toward whip] You'll find that your best friend, Granger. These cons are pretty thick but Black Annie's one language they all understand.
Capt. Duncan: [to Cliff Roberts] Three lashes ain't enough. Keep going.
Roy Snead: What did you come here for? Just to torture me some more?::Cliff Roberts: I want to be your friend, Snead.

Jump Rope HIIT Circuit #29 - The Convict Workout
Jacob stands on snakes
And finds his life in shame
They will make their plea
Trust in the disease
One last drop of pain
The fighting's all in vain
One last antidote
Forgotten ties on severed ropes
Hanging them from poles
Someone saw the light
And brought his bow string tight
[Verse 1:]
I found a world of change it came across my way
Shit smacked me in the face, and scared me to this day
But in this world of change, I found new discoveries
What I will find, made up my mind, there ain't no other way
[Break:]
And not a split second seemed to pass, inside my head of where to flick it
We are straight by the company of this life, juvenile delinquent
We've been smoking up on the trees, and the kind buds till we've learned
Never to trust a friend in a bend, you'll get fucking burned
[Chorus:]
And I'm lifted once again
Flashing lights beside my bed
Now my life has changed again
Tragedy my only friend
I'm convicted once again
My only thoughts behold the end
Through and through my conscience shreds
But I'm happier instead
[Verse 2:]
I found a world of change it came across my way
Shit smacked me in the face, and scared me to this day
But in this world of change, I found new discoveries
What I will find, made up my mind, there ain't no other way
[Break]
[Chorus]
[Bridge:]
We fell to deep
Lust in temptation for my soul to keep
Lie awake to sleep
I will jump in the air but I'll land on my feet
We fell to deep
Lust in temptation for my soul to keep
Lie awake to sleep
I will jump in the air but I'll land on my feet
I'm a convict in a madhouse blues Trying to live by the silver rule I don't understand a word about Pension plans or saving accounts
It's weekends and the nightlife tunes Dying lust in the smoking rooms They take whatever they make Heart fails or Jesus saves
Now was it all I ever wanted too All I ever wanted too
Flick through for a better view Screens get bigger for smaller news I'd like to love but it's a teenage dream And all the Biebers turn into junkies at nineteen
Suits, ties and lies for good Black-eyed wives drinking Jack at noon Don't you miss your one last chance To lose everything for the dance
Now was it all you ever wanted too All you ever wanted too Now was it all we ever wanted too All we ever wanted too
