Happy Vaisakhi 2014: Message from David Cameron
Message by Prime Minister David Cameron to celebrate Vaisakhi. "I want to send my best wishes to everyone celebrating Vaisakhi this year. This is a hugely important time for Sikhs across Britain and around the world, for them to come together with friends and family to celebrate the birth of the faith. 160 years ago, the first Sikh arrived in Britain. Since then, Sikhs have more than made their mark here -- in business, in public services, in sport, culture, charity and beyond. Vaisakhi gives us a chance to celebrate that immense contribution and to share the success stories of British Sikhs: Of people like Tom Singh, who expanded a single clothes shop into a chain of 1,000 New Look stores around the world. Like Paul Uppal, the self-made businessman, who is the only Sikh MP serving in the House of Commons. Like Ravi Singh, from the charity Khalsa Aid, who rallied the community during the recent flooding to help with the clean-up. And like the remarkable marathon runner Fauja Singh -- 'the turbaned tornado' -- who, at over 100, is still running and still inspiring millions. 2014 also marks 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. During that conflict, well over a million men from India fought for Britain. Many thousands of them were Sikhs -- and many made the ultimate sacrifice. From the trenches of the Somme, to the deserts of the Middle East, they demonstrated the bravery and the courage that is so synonymous with Sikhism so I hope we can all pause this Vaisakhi to remember those who fought and fell for the freedoms we enjoy today. Vaisakhi is also a special time for Hindus, who are celebrating the beginning of their New Year. We salute their ancestors' remarkable role in the First World War, and their role in British life too. So as we think about the contribution of these faith communities, past and present, let me, once again, wish everyone a very happy Vaisakhi."- published: 10 Apr 2014

The Miracle of Baisakhi Vaisakhi - Guru Gobind Singh Sahib
The Miracle of Baisakhi Vaisakhi - Guru Gobind Singh Sahib
BAISAKHI OR VAISAKHI On this memorable Baisakhi day (March,30 of A.D.1699) , Guru Gobind Singh Sahib called a big meeting at Kesgarh Sahib near the City of Anandpur Sahib. Between fifty to eighty thousand Sikhs attended this meeting. When all were expecting to hear words of comfort and consolation from the lips of their Guru, they were perturbed to see him with a drawn sword in his hand and cried ' Is there anyone here who would lay down his life for Dharam?' There was a big silence, but the Guru went on repeating his demand. At the third call Daya Ram, a Khatri of Lahore, rose from his seat and offered himself. The Guru took him into an adjoining enclosure....(and soon after) came out with the (blood) dripping....(sword in hand) and flourshing it before the gathering, asked again, 'Is there any other Sikh here who will offer himself as a sacrifice(for the cause of dharma)? At this Daram Das, a Jat of Delhi (Haryana side) came forward and was taken into the enclosure....(The Guru again came out with the blood-stained sword, and made his previous demand). In the same way three other men stood up, one after another, and offered themselves for the sacrifice. One was Mohkam Chand, a chhimba of Dwarka (Gujarat State); another was Himmat, a cook of Jagannath (Orissa State); and the third was Sahib Chand, a barber of Bidar (Karnataka State). The Guru, after dressing the five in handsome clothes, brought them from the assembly. These five were then administered 'Khande di Pahul' (the double-edged Sword Amrit). They were then knighted as Singhs, as the Five beloved ones, the first members of the Order of the Khalsa. The Guru then asked them to administer the Pahul to him in the same manner in which he had given the Pahul to them, and it was done so. With the creation of Khalsa, the Khalsa created history and since the birth of Khalsa, the history of Punjab has been the history of Sikhs. Baisakhi played a significant role in this regard. In 1762, Ahmed Shah Abdali, with the sole purpose to destroy the entire Sikh nation, declared 'Jehad'(holy-war) against the Sikhs and all the Muslims of the Punjab rallied under this slogan. The Sikhs were surrounded near the village Kup in Ludhiana District. Chronicles mention that about twenty thousand Sikhs were martyred in a single day. This event is known in the history of the Sikhs as "Ghallughara" (Bloody Carnage). After this, Ahmed Shah Abdali thought that he had crushed the entire Sikh nation, but was greatly disillusioned when after a few months heard that the Sikhs in large number are celebrating Baisakhi at Amritsar. In due course of time Baisakhi reminds every Sikh of his cultural and religious heritage. On Baisakhi day all the Sikhs used to assemble at Amritsar and decide their problems relating to politics and religion. This convention still goes on. The celebrations of Baisakhi are similar to the three-day schedule of the the celebrations of other Gurpurabs. It is generally celebrated on 13th April every year.- published: 14 Apr 2011

Vaisakhi - procession - Nagar Kirtan - in Southall UK - 2014
100,000 people line the streets of Southall to see the religious festival procession every year. My "17 minute video" documents the events between, South rd-High st, junction with Lady Margaret rd and Southall park. From the Havelock road, to Park avenue Gurdwara's. This year it was exceptionally well organised. The weather was fairly warm at 14 deg c, overcast. The crowd loved the Martial Arts and participated in the chanting which made the atmosphere extremely peaceful. The fun fair in Southall park was also very popular with the families who came for the festival. There is free food and drink on every street, so you can eat to your hearts content and do some shopping for your favorite cloths and jewelry at the same time. All together a great day out, so I highly recommend it to anyone. This is the biggest Sikh festival in all of Europe. There are over 20 Million Sikh people who follow the faith which is over 500 years old. The word "Guru" is a Sanskrit word meaning teacher, honoured person, religious person or saint. Sikhism though has a very specific definition of the word Guru. It means the descent of divine guidance to mankind provided through ten Enlightened Masters. This honour of being called a Sikh Guru applies only to the ten Gurus who founded the religion starting with Guru Nanak in 1469 and ending with Guru Gobind Singh in 1708; thereafter it refers to the Sikh Holy Scriptures the Guru Granth Sahib. The divine spirit was passed from one Guru to the next as "The light of a lamp which lights another does not abate. Similarly a spiritual leader and his disciple become equal, Nanak says the truth."
