Urban Runoff
In Los Angeles, most of the rain water is sent to the ocean. Along the way, water runoff picks up pollutants, trash, fertilizers and pesticides. This liquid waste is the single largest source of water pollution into the ocean, giving Los Angeles some of the most polluted beaches in California. Every Wednesday morning, students from Santa Monica High School collect water samples at one of many urban runoffs responsible for pouring over 100 million gallons of contaminated water into the ocean each day. Santa Monica High School and Surfrider Foundation teamed up to create Teach & Test, a program aimed at raising awareness of water quality issues at Los Angeles beaches. As they later analyze in their lab the water samples collected at the beach that day, student findings demonstrate that bacteria levels are calling for the city to put up an advisory. Finally, students suggest a number of solutions to avoid water runoff and save the ocean.

Urban Runoff
The California Delta is often recognized for playing two major roles: as a fresh water supply for millions of Californians and hundreds of thousands of acres of productive agriculture and as a vibrant ecosystem that supports 750 species of plants, fish and wildlife, making it one of the most ecologically diverse aquatic habitats on the West Coast. But the Delta also functions as the gutter system for much of the state. The Delta and its tributaries are used to take wastewater and stormwater runoff from all over Northern California, out to the ocean.

Affects of Urban Runoff to the Santa Clara River: Part 3
This Week in Santa Clarita has been focusing environmental issues relating to urban run off, storm drains and the Santa Clara River. In this final segment of a three part series, This Week takes a look at where all the storm water and urban runoff ends up and how a local elementary school built a rain garden to prevent urban runoff.

NS202- Urban Runoff
In this video, we are explaining one human impact on the environment. Through constant urbanization and a build up of chemical exhaust, as well as trash from human beings, we resultantly pollute all water ways that provide for our own needs. The pollution produced by humans, through the toxins of cars and factories, becomes entangled within the hydrologic cycle as it enters through the atmosphere or the hydrosphere. The amount of pollution entering the hydrologic cycle is increasing at an alarming rate and should be monitored, for if we do not, we may not have any clean water to drink or use. SMURRF Virtual Tour
Urban runoff is the number one source of pollution to Santa Monica Bay. Santa Monica's Urban Runoff Recycling Facility, known as the "SMURRF", is a leading example of technologies dealing with polluted stormwater/urban runoff to the maximum extent possible to protect our coastal waters.

Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program
Accidental or intentional, litter is water pollution. In the Santa Clara Basin Watershed, pollution on the ground is carried by rain and runoff through storm drains and into local creeks and the Bay without any cleaning or filtering. Protect local creeks and the Bay by preventing litter: use trash cans, close trash can lids, use a litter bag in your car, and tarp your truck loads. Every piece of litter counts, and every effort you make, makes a big difference.
