The three piecesa that constitute Decorations were published in 1915 and reflect earlier visits to the Channel Islands. The first of the set, The Island Spell, was started during a holiday in Jersey in 1912 inspired by Le Fauvic beach. After work on the piece at home in Chelsea, he completed it in Jersey the following year, along with the rest of the set. Arthur Symons and Arthur Machen are quoted in two of the pieces.
The set was reviewed by the Monthly Musical Record in August 1915, as follows:
"These three pieces are well named, since they are the most successful pieces of pictorial writing we have encountered since the advent of Maurice Ravel, whose style they somewhat resemble as regards technique. Magic seas and fairy woods are evoked by the subtlest art in the first piece, “The Island Spell”. Is it by accident that one conjures up the magic music of Shakespeare’s “Tempest”? An all-pervading mood is here, as with the best types of decorative music. There is a curious compelling charm and feeling of remoteness about the “Moon-Glade”, also written over a poem of Arthur Symons commencing “Why are you so sorrowful in dreams?” This piece is pure impressionism. The fading tonality at the close, so like the stuff dreams are made of, is a wonderful piece of tone-artistry. The third movement entitled “The Scarlet Ceremonies” is the most striking of the set. It is founded on a quotation from Arthur Machen’s “The House of Souls”. Against a continuously palpitating pattern in the right hand a trumpet-like theme is given out by the left. The whole movement is evolved from the first twelve bars or so. The theme passes to the right hand later on, appearing over a fluttering figure of fourths in the bass. There is an original “pedal-point” effect at the end, and a new double glissando of white and black notes which will be responsible for many grazed fingers. Originality breathes in every bar of the Decorations, and the composer evidently possesses peculiar magic powers in the world of sound."

A single-movement chamber work for clarinet and piano by English composer John Ireland (1879-1962). Ireland composed this piece in 1943 while staying with Rev. Paul Walde in Little Sampford rectory, Essex, after fleeing Guernsey in 1940 before the German invasion. The sonata is dedicated to the prominent British clarinettist Frederick "Jack" Thurston (1901-1953), for whom numerous composers such as Bax, Bliss, Maconchy, Howells and Malcolm Arnold composed music. Ireland considered the clarinet the greatest woodwind instrument, and his love of the instrument is evident in this work.

John Ireland (actor)
John Benjamin Ireland (January 30, 1914 – March 21, 1992) was a Canadian actor and film director.
Early life
Ireland was born John Benjamin Ireland in Vancouver, British Columbia on January 30, 1914. He lived in New York City from a very early age. Ireland's formal education ended at the 7th grade; and, like many children at that time, he worked to help his family make ends meet. He never knew his father. His mother remarried and had three other children, a daughter Kathryn, a son named Tommy (became Tommy Noonan who co-starred in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"), and another son Michael. Their last name was Noone. Ireland never knew for sure where his last name came from. One of his jobs was in a water carnival where he wrestled a dead octopus. His discovery of acting was by accident, but he fell in love with it and studied Shakespeare as his "formal" education. Tall and lean, he appeared on Broadway and toured in Shakespeare in the late 1930s and early 1940s before entering film in the mid-1940s.

The three piecesa that constitute Decorations were published in 1915 and reflect earlier visits to the Channel Islands. The first of the set, The Island Spell, was started during a holiday in Jersey in 1912 inspired by Le Fauvic beach. After work on the piece at home in Chelsea, he completed it in Jersey the following year, along with the rest of the set. Arthur Symons and Arthur Machen are quoted in two of the pieces.
The set was reviewed by the Monthly Musical Record in August 1915, as follows:
"These three pieces are well named, since they are the most successful pieces of pictorial writing we have encountered since the advent of Maurice Ravel, whose style they somewhat resemble as regards technique. Magic seas and fairy woods are evoked by the subtlest art in the first piece, “The Island Spell”. Is it by accident that one conjures up the magic music of Shakespeare’s “Tempest”? An all-pervading mood is here, as with the best types of decorative music. There is a curious compelling charm and feeling of remoteness about the “Moon-Glade”, also written over a poem of Arthur Symons commencing “Why are you so sorrowful in dreams?” This piece is pure impressionism. The fading tonality at the close, so like the stuff dreams are made of, is a wonderful piece of tone-artistry. The third movement entitled “The Scarlet Ceremonies” is the most striking of the set. It is founded on a quotation from Arthur Machen’s “The House of Souls”. Against a continuously palpitating pattern in the right hand a trumpet-like theme is given out by the left. The whole movement is evolved from the first twelve bars or so. The theme passes to the right hand later on, appearing over a fluttering figure of fourths in the bass. There is an original “pedal-point” effect at the end, and a new double glissando of white and black notes which will be responsible for many grazed fingers. Originality breathes in every bar of the Decorations, and the composer evidently possesses peculiar magic powers in the world of sound."

A single-movement chamber work for clarinet and piano by English composer John Ireland (1879-1962). Ireland composed this piece in 1943 while staying with Rev. Paul Walde in Little Sampford rectory, Essex, after fleeing Guernsey in 1940 before the German invasion. The sonata is dedicated to the prominent British clarinettist Frederick "Jack" Thurston (1901-1953), for whom numerous composers such as Bax, Bliss, Maconchy, Howells and Malcolm Arnold composed music. Ireland considered the clarinet the greatest woodwind instrument, and his love of the instrument is evident in this work.

Fifteen years ago, wealthy but crippled Colorado cattleman Arch Strobie (Ray Collins), whose own son Lee (Robert Walker) is wild, took in young Owen Daybright (Burt Lancaster) as a foster son to help raise him. Now Owen is ranch foreman, but Lee, despite being married to Jen (Joanne Dru), is wilder than ever.
Unmarried Lily Fasken (Sally Forrest) gives birth but refuses to identify the father. After Owen gives Lily $500 to help care for the baby, her brothers Hub (John Ireland) and Dick (Hugh O'Brian) believe that he is the guilty party, unaware that he did so on Lee's behalf. The brothers try to beat up Owen and he lodges a complaint against them. Sentenced to a week in jail, they vow to get even as soon as they're out.
When Arch chides Lee for overdrawing his bank account by withdrawing $500 in gold, Jen realizes that Lee fathered Lily's baby. She confronts him and Lee tries to lie his way out. She decides to leave him but is persuaded by Owen and Arch to stay. Lee inveigles Arch to make him a partner in the ranch by saying that he will strike out on his own unless he gets a half-interest and learns that the other half will go to Owen once Arch retires.
Jen locks Lee out of their bedroom. Lee gets drunk, mistakenly believing she and Owen are carrying on behind his back. He schemes to get rid of Owen and make a fortune at the same time by conspiring with Hub and Dick to ambush Owen during the spring cattle roundup. On the trail, Lee secretly sells 3,000 head of the cattle, planning to run off with it, but Owen learns about it.
Lee pretends to change his mind. He persuades Owen to ride in with him to stop the sale, but in fact he lures Owen into a trap. Hub and Dick, waiting in ambush, wound Owen as Lee casually rides away. In the ensuing gunfight, Owen Kills Dick. Hearing shots, a group of trailhands ride to Owen's rescue. They chase down and shoot Hub. Owen catches up with Lee and tells him he is going to confess everything to Arch. Lee draws his gun, forcing Owen to kill him. Owen breaks the news to Arch and Jen.

Frank Webster (John Ireland) has broken out of jail after serving time for a murder he did not commit. While on the run, and the subject of radio news reports, he becomes cornered in a small coffee shop by a zealous citizen. He commits battery to escape, and kidnaps a young woman named Connie (Dorothy Malone) as he gets away. Frank drives off with Connie in her Jaguar. But she soon proves a difficult hostage, trying to escape a few times, which leads him to treat her more roughly than they both would prefer. This mutual struggle soon leads the two to fall in love with each other. Continuing to elude police, the couple slips into a cross-border sports car race, which Frank plans to take advantage of in order to escape into Mexico. But out of sympathy for Frank and a desire to be with him, Connie informs the police of the plan so he might face trial and be acquitted. And at the last moment he too decides it is better to turn himself in. The film ends with his capture by police imminent.

Re-mastered and re-released to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the film’s release and the 120th anniversary of the birth of the film’s director on 12th February 1895, Belfast born, Gallipoli veteran Brian Desmond Hurst.
In this story of Western Ireland, the most famous work of Ireland’s greatest dramatist JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE is brought to the screen by Ulster’s greatest film director BRIAN DESMOND HURST.
It tells of a deeply religious people who speak English with all the poetry and strange turn of phrase f their Irish mother tongue. The women still keep the custom of ‘keening’ lamenting their dead.
When the story opens, Maurya (Sara Allgood), the mother, has lost to the sea her father, husband and two sons. Now only two sons are left for her, Michael (Denis Johnston credits note as Denis Johnstone) and Bartley (Kevin Guthrie). The appearance of Synge’s bereaved fiancée Maire O’Neill as ‘first woman’ is most poignant (born as Mary Allgood and known as Molly and appearing alongside her sister Sara. Note the film credits show her as Maire O’Neill). Actor and film critic Patrick Kirwan plays the Donegal Priest and a host of Abbey players provide much of the cast. Gracie Fields helped Hurst finance the film and artist John Patrick Flanagan co-produced the film and provided the art direction. Location shots were at Renvyle, Connemara, Co Galway, Ireland.

Fantasy-Sonata, for clarinet and piano (1943) A single-movement chamber work for clarinet and piano by English composer John Ireland (1879-1962). Ireland composed this piece in 1943 while staying with Rev. Paul Walde in Little Sampford rectory, Essex, after fleeing Guernsey in 1940 before the German invasion. The sonata is dedicated to the prominent British clarinettist Frederick "Jack" Thurston (1901-1953), for whom numerous composers such as Bax, Bliss, Maconchy, Howells and Malcolm Arnold composed music. Ireland considered the clarinet the greatest woodwind instrument, and his love of the instrument is evident in this work. The first of the set, The Island Spell, was started during a holiday in Jersey in 1912 inspired by Le Fauvic beach. After work on the piece at home in Chelsea, he completed it in Jersey the following year, along with the rest of the set. Arthur Symons and Arthur Machen are quoted in two of the pieces.
The set was reviewed by the Monthly Musical Record in August 1915, as follows:
"These three pieces are well named, since they are the most successful pieces of pictorial writing we have encountered since the advent of Maurice Ravel, whose style they somewhat resemble as regards technique. Magic seas and fairy woods are evoked by the subtlest art in the first piece, “The Island Spell”. Is it by accident that one conjures up the magic music of Shakespeare’s “Tempest”? An all-pervading mood is here, as with the best types of decorative music. There is a curious compelling charm and feeling of remoteness about the “Moon-Glade”, also written over a poem of Arthur Symons commencing “Why are you so sorrowful in dreams?” This piece is pure impressionism. The fading tonality at the close, so like the stuff dreams are made of, is a wonderful piece of tone-artistry. The third movement entitled “The Scarlet Ceremonies” is the most striking of the set. It is founded on a quotation from Arthur Machen’s “The House of Souls”. Against a continuously palpitating pattern in the right hand a trumpet-like theme is given out by the left. The whole movement is evolved from the first twelve bars or so. The theme passes to the right hand later on, appearing over a fluttering figure of fourths in the bass. There is an original “pedal-point” effect at the end, and a new double glissando of white and black notes which will be responsible for many grazed fingers. Originality breathes in every bar of the Decorations, and the composer evidently possesses peculiar magic powers in the world of sound."
