How strong is Iraq's army? - BBC News
Iraq's army has benefited from years of US and British training, as well as billions of dollars in military aid. But it has lost major Iraqi cities - including Mosul, Tikrit and Falluja - to a far smaller number of Jihadist militants. The BBC assesses how strong the army really is - in 45 seconds. Battlefield Iraq: Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar Province
Battlefield Iraq Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar Province. Heavy Fighting Firefights And Clashes In Iraqs Anbar Province. Since 2014 the Anbar Province is place of fierce fighting between Sunni Iraqi Militias and the Iraqi Army. The main area of the clashes are the citys Ramadi and Falluja where a strong sunni population is located. According to Officials and witnesses, the Iraq government mainly has lost control over the strategic citys, west of Baghdad. The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi. Al-Qaeda black flags have been seen on government and police vehicles captured by the fighters. The army has besieged Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, and has launched air strikes on the city. Security forces backed by tanks on battled militants in Iraq's Anbar province, where fighting has displaced thousands and sparked warnings of rights abuses and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Some of the most significant fighting appeared to be in Falluja, where the U.S. military fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war, with militants planting al Qaeda flags on buildings. Gunmen calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, took to a stage before thousands of Sunnis following Friday prayers in Falluja. The takeover of Fallujah and parts of Ramadi is the first time that tribal fighters have exercised such open control in major Iraqi cities since the height of the bloody insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003. The fighting has left more than a hundred people dead and forced thousands of Falluja's residents to flee the city, to Baghdad, northern Iraq and the southern city of Karbala, where Shiite leaders are hosting the displaced families in housing built for religious pilgrims. The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants. Iraq's prime minister has urged residents and tribes in Anbar province to "expel" al-Qaeda-linked fighters to avoid an all-out battle - remarks that may signal an imminent military move to retake the former insurgent stronghold. The Insurgents mainly ambushing Iraqi Army convoys in urban areas and attacking small check points and police stations with small arms, rpgs and ieds. The Iraqi Army repels with Air Strikes and armored infantry units. The ISIL rebels were trying to bring the battle to the cities of Anbar and Fallujah because there's no security there and they know they will be thoroughly defeated in the desert. The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008. Officials have blamed the upsurge in violence to a resurgent Al-Qaeda emboldened by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, but the government has itself faced criticism for not doing enough to address the concerns of Iraq's disaffected Sunni Arab minority ahead of April elections. Iraqi Militants In Heavy Clashes With The Iraqi Army In Anbar Province
The Iraq government has lost control of the strategic city of Falluja, west of Baghdad, say officials and witnesses. Al-Qaeda-linked militants now control the south of the city. An Iraqi reporter there says tribesmen allied with al-Qaeda hold the rest of Falluja. The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants. The White House, meanwhile, dismissed claims that the fighting, which has seen militants retake the city of Fallujah, was a result of President Barack Obama's decision to withdraw US troops. Two Iraqi Army soldiers were wounded when an Improvised Explosive Device exploded to the north of Babel province showing that the fighting is spreading over Iraq. "Unidentified gunmen emplaced a bomb nearby a security checkpoint, that belongs to the Iraqi Army/ 31st Brigade/ exploded at the entrance of Mussayib district of northern Hilla," noting that "The explosion of the IED resulted in wounding two soldiers of the security checkpoint.""The security forces blocked off the explosion area and transported the wounded soldiers to the hospital for treatment," The house of Fallujah Police Commander was detonated by gunmen on Monday. "The house of the Colonel Mohamed Allawi, the police commander of Fallujah Police Forces, was detonated by gunmen," noting that "The explosion resulted in huge material damages to the house.""The explosion did not cause any human causalities since the house was empty at the explosion time," Map of Falluja: http://adf.ly/bsdWJ Map of Ramadi: http://adf.ly/bsdcQ Like Our Facebook Page: http://on.fb.me/1h2gWju Subscribe To WarClashes: http://bit.ly/1jNCmDm- published: 13 Jan 2014

Thousands more join Iraqi army in fight against ISIL
More volunteers joining the Iraqi army: thousands of volunteers have signed up at recruitment centers across Iraq over the past few days as armed forces try to push back insurgents. Political figures, clerics and tribal leaders are among those joining the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. In Baghdad, people gathered at the Federal Police Command headquarters, chanting religious and patriotic slogans. They say their mobilization is in response to calls by the country's top religious figurs. Arshad al-Salehi, the head of the Iraqi Turkmen Front has also called on fellow Iraqi Turkmen to take up arms against the militants.- published: 16 Jun 2014

Earlier, Iraqi Interior ministry announced that over 50 terrorists were killed in Baghdad over the past 24 hours. The army also released footage of air raids against militant positions and hideouts in Salahuddin and Nineveh provinces. Iraqi Security Forces Fighting Militants In Falluja And Ramadi, Anbar Province
Fighting is raging between al Qaeda-backed militants and Iraq's security forces for control of two key cities in the embattled Anbar province, even as a deal was in place with Sunni tribesmen to fight alongside Iraqi police against the militant group. The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi. The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008. "We call you to join us in our fight against the government of Nuri al-Maliki," one of the gunman said through a bullhorn. Authorities say gunmen have attacked an Iraqi army barracks north of Baghdad, killing 12 soldiers meaning that the militant attacks are spreading beyond Anbar. Human rights activists have condemned abuses by both government troops and insurgents in Iraq's Anbar province. "Apparently unlawful methods of fighting by all sides have caused civilian casualties," Human Rights Watch said in a report. The rights group criticised Iraqi forces and militants for carrying out attacks in residential areas. It comes as troops prepare to launch a major assault against al-Qaeda-linked militants in the city of Falluja.
