#BBCtrending: Colombian fury at miniskirt rape remarks A Colombian nightclub owner has suggested a woman allegedly raped outside his club may have invited the attack by wearing a miniskirt. Andres Jaramillo has since apologised for his remarks, but not before women's rights groups took to social media to vent their fury. They asked supporters to post pictures of themselves in miniskirts under the umbrella hashtag #Yomepongounaminifaldayque - I wear a miniskirt - so what? BBC Bogota correspondent Arturo Wallace told #BBCtrending's Anne-Marie Tomchak about the huge response, and what it says about Colombia's ongoing struggle against sexual violence. Shocking Moment Hitman Shoots Edison Cortes In Colombian Bar And Kills Brother Who Stop Fleeing
Shocking Moment Hitman Walks Into Colombian Bar, Shoots Man And Kills Brother Who Stop Fleeing For TWO POUNDS Edison Cortes, 27, was blasted at close range while his brother Fredy was gunned down as he chased the hired assassin This is the horrifying moment a hitman gunned down a customer in a packed Colombian bar before shooting the man's brother dead as he tried to stop him fleeing. The assassin walked in, ordered a beer and smoked a cigarette as he calmly identified his target before pulling a gun out of a shoulder bag and firing at him five times, leaving him critically injured. The victim's brother rushed at him to stop him firing a sixth shot but was blasted in the chest and died at the scene. CCTV shows the brother chase after the gunman, staggering back through the door a short time later. The man appears to be exhausted but he soon collapses and it becomes apparent that he has been shot as blood seeps from a wound visible through his white T shirt. The shocking images were broadcast on Colombian TV today as police appealed for information on the mystery assassin. Edison Cortes, 27, remains critically ill in hospital where he is under police guard. His brother, named as 25 year old Fredy Cortes, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting in a suburb of the capital Bogota. He leaves a pregnant wife and a seven year old daughter. Both worked as electrical engineers for a company owned by their father. Their mother Nancy insisted she had no idea why the hitman had targeted her eldest son. Edison had phoned her moments before the attack to say he would drop by to see her after a beer with his brother and two friends. Devastated Nancy, a regular church goer, said: "I don't know why anyone would want to kill Edison. "He was a hard-working boy who wasn't involved in anything he shouldn't have been. "We're terrified now that the assassin will try to murder him in hospital." Thousands of hitmen are allegedly available for hire in Colombia. Two years ago, Spanish newspaper El Pais put the number of assassins in the city of Medellin, home to Pablo Escobar's legendary drugs cartel, at around 5000. It was claimed they were willing to kill for just over TWO POUNDS. Medellin police commander General Yesid Vasquez dismissed the report as rubbish, saying it did not reflect the city's current reality. He claimed the real number of hitmen in the city was closer to 500.- published: 07 Feb 2014

Ukraine Burning
Ukraine Burning
Check out more episodes of VICE News here: http://bit.ly/PILfBe Kiev's Euromaidan protesters began 2014 the same way they ended 2013: by rioting in the streets in an attempt to bring down their government. Key victories have already been won, with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and his cabinet resigning. The demonstrators also forced the annulment of a new anti-protest law that was, ironically, the cause of much of their protesting. The protesters haven't been contented by this, however, and are still out in the streets, demanding the head of President Viktor Yanukovych and the staging of fresh elections. What began as a protest against the Ukrainian government's close ties with Russian leader Vladimir Putin has become a focus for wider discontent. However, Yanukovych seems in no mood to relinquish his power. As the social unrest spreads across the country, its first post-Soviet President, Leonid Kravchuk, has gone as far as to warn that Ukraine is on the brink of civil war. Dozens of people have lost their lives in just the last two days of violence. At the end of January, VICE flew to Kiev as rioters hurled Molotov cocktails at police and the city turned into a battlefield. Big Earthquake Shakes Buildings in Tokyo: Reports | BREAKING NEWS - 05 MAY 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS A powerful earthquake shook buildings in Tokyo early on Monday, AFP reporters in the Japanese capital said, but officials said there was no risk of a tsunami. The epicentre of the quake - which struck at 5:18 am (2018 GMT Sunday) - was near Izu Oshima island southwest of central Tokyo, the Japanese meteorological agency said. The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.8 and struck at a depth of 156 kilometres (97 miles) National broadcaster NHK said there were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries. The station said Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), the operator of the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant, said there were no abnormal signs at the reactors. Japan is situated at the meeting place of a number of tectonic plates and experiences a number of relatively violent quakes every year. However, strict building codes frequently mean that even powerful quakes that might wreak havoc in other countries can pass without much damage. Thousands EVACUATED due to severe flooding in BALKANS | BREAKING NEWS - 18 MAY 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS Severe flooding across Serbia has prompted the evacuation of at least 16,300 people -- including 1,100 whisked away on helicopters -- the government said Saturday. A spokesman for the Interior Ministry confirmed there have been at least 15 deaths in Serbia and another five in neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina. Unconfirmed reports put the numbers even higher. It's the worst flooding Serbia has seen since the country began keeping records 120 years ago, according to meteorologists. The catastrophic weather has prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency in Bosnia-Herzegovina, according to a government statement. Bosnian authorities say the flooded town of Maglaj received the average rainfall for a two-month period in less than two days. Speaking at a press conference, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that the situation in his country is "difficult," but that Serbia is prepared for the next wave of floods. More rising waters are expected Sunday evening near Sabac, a city in western Serbia near the Sava River. Vucic said that Sabac is well fortified and that authorities had done "everything that could be done." The Prime Minister pointed out that a dam 7.3 meters tall (24 feet) has been erected, but that the current level of the Sava River is over 6.3 meters -- a historic high. The river is expected to rise. He warned that it is difficult to predict what will happen if the river reaches 6.8 meters, or slightly more than 22 feet. Rescuers in the hard-hit town of Obrenovac, 30 kilometers (about 19 miles) southwest of Belgrade, have recovered the first bodies of flood victims, according to Vucic. He expressed concern over how many may eventually be found once waters subside. Authorities estimate that 90% of the town has been flooded. The Prime Minister thanked the many countries that have already come to Serbia's aid. He was especially grateful to members of the Russian special forces, highlighting one member who swam 200 meters in cold water to save several people. According to Finance Minister Dusan Vujovic, more than 10,000 troops have already been involved in rescue and assistance operations. Colombia - Timelapse
Colombia - 2012
On my second holiday to this stunning country I decided to do the fatal thing and take my camera along with me. I thought about shooting a timelapse shot or two… I ended up filming on average 2 shots per day over the course of 4 weeks and it really became a working holiday!
I was a little nervous to begin with. I had been there before, but didn’t take my DSLR along with me. Now Colombia is vastly safer than it was 20-30 years ago – however its still a little risky if you don’t know where to go. Also, the very nature of timelapse means your stuck in one place for an hour or two and it could be a nice target for opportunists! Luckily I had my father in law and new camera assistant Moises - He even took a small baseball bat along with him on an evening in Bogota! In the end we weren’t troubled at all and I’m so glad I managed to capture so many great images.
Quite a bit of this film was shot in Bogota, and in the Quindio region, including Armenia. We also travelled to Melgar, Manizales and Pereira.
I was limited in what I could take kit wise due to travelling with a baby. So I took a very lightweight tripod, a Canon7D and my trusty 17-55mm f2.8 lens. Had a few problems with camera shake in post, but actually the small tripod held up OK!
This time round I shot a fair amount of HDR timelapse – and had days of processing with Photomatix. On balance I think it was really worth it. So many of the scenes had extreme exposure contrast and I really wanted to preserve detail in the sky and in the landscape itself. It was cut using FCP, and graded with Magic Bullet Looks. All of the tilt shift effects are done in post using Magic Bullet.
Please do go ahead and visit this country if you get the chance!

Colombia
Spent a couple weeks in Colombia with my girlfriend and decided to compile some clips I took into a short travel video. I never really set out to make these things, but I always get back with nowhere near enough clips to make something longer, but just enough to make a little short. Maybe the next time I'm on an airplane, I'll put more time into making these.
Hope this fuels your wanderlust and/or gets you excited to visit Colombia soon.

Renegade Libyan General Says Parliament Suspended | BREAKING NEWS - 19 MAY 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS A group led by a renegade Libyan general has said it suspended parliament after launching an attack against the legislative body. Gen Mokhtar Farnana, speaking on a Libyan television channel, said a group led by Gen Khalifa Hifter had assigned a 60-member constituent's assembly to take over for parliament. Farnana said Libya's current government would act on an emergency basis. He did not elaborate. Farnana said forces loyal to Hifter carried out yesterday's attack on parliament. He also said yesterday's attack on Libya's parliament was not a coup, but "fighting by the people's choice." "We announce to the world that the country can't be a breeding ground or an incubator for terrorism," said Farnana, who wore a military uniform and stood in front of Libya's flag. Farnana serves as the commander of the military force in Tripoli. Libya's interim government had no immediate comment on the broadcast. It was not immediately clear where Farnana spoke from. Yesterday's attack on parliament, in which Hifter's forces kidnapped some 20 lawmakers and officials in an assault that threatened to further splinter a country dominated by the armed groups that overthrew dictator Moammar Gadhafi three years ago. The attack, which hospital officials said killed one person and wounded nine, came after an assault Friday by Hifter's forces on Islamist militias in the restive eastern city of Benghazi that authorities said killed 70 people. Yesterday, troops loyal to Hifter targeted the Islamist lawmakers and officials the general blames for allowing extremists to hold the country ransom, his spokesman Mohammed al-Hegazi told Libya's al-Ahrar television station. "This parliament is what supports these extremist Islamist entities," al-Hegazi said. "The aim was to arrest these Islamist bodies who wear the cloak of politics." The fighting spread to the capital's southern edge last night and along the highway leading to the airport. Libya's army and police rely heavily on the country's myriad of militias, the heavily armed groups formed around ethnic identity, hometowns and religion that formed out of the rebel factions that toppled Gadhafi. Bringing them under control has been one of the greatest challenges for Libya's successive interim governments, one they largely failed at as militias have seized oil terminals and even kidnapped a former prime minister seemingly at will. Displaced in San Andrés: Colombian Conflict Victims Fight for Safehaven
Colombia's Caribbean archipelago San Andrés is known for its tropical climate, white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and is believed to have always been isolated from the Colombian Armed Conflict. That's far from the case. Many displaced Colombians have fled to the island for fear of getting hurt or killed by their aggressors on the mainland but now they're facing backlashes by the local government. The House That Cocaine Built
The House That Cocaine Built
Cocaine exports account for roughly 2.5% of Colombia's GDP. It is the equivalent of the mining industry's share of the American economy—Exports of the drug are down—but it's still an $8 billion a year business for Colombian traffickers. That's plenty of incentive to keep production going no matter how hard the government cracks down. Over the last decade, America has given billions to the Colombian military to fight the narco traffickers. In some ways it looks like the U.S. is getting bang for its bucks—Colombian authorities destroyed 2,356 labs in 2012, a serious dent in Colombia's cocaine industry. But producers and traffickers of the drug are finding ever more creative ways to keep this lucrative business thriving. It's like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole, just when authorities think they've got the cartels on the run, their methods evolve and adapt. As a British journalist living in the region, our reporter Toby Muse was curious about the current 'state of the art' for Colombia's processors, traffickers and dealers—what are the latest tricks to outsmarting the authorities? He made a few calls and obtained rare, and potentially dangerous access to a processing laboratory. It's not in the jungle as you might expect, but in an urban center of a Colombian city, which we agreed not to name. It turns out that the latest trend in Colombia's cocaine trade is to move processing out of the huge plants found in the jungle to small, mobile and disposable urban labs. In this new, decentralized world of cocaine production, two men with some buckets, a handful of microwave ovens and only the most basic knowledge of chemistry can take naturally growing coco leaves and turn them into 100% pure cocaine powder. And here's the craziest part...they show us how they do it.- published: 14 Jan 2014
