The City of Saskatoon
The City of Saskatoon
The city of Saskatoon is Saskatchewan's river city, developed around the shores of the South Saskatchewan River. Currently the largest city in Saskatchewan, Saskatoon has become a cultural hub with many theaters, restaurants, art galleries, music venues and historic buildings calling it home. Among these include The Roxy Theatre, one of the last 3 active atmospheric-theatres in Canada. Many of Saskatoon's restaurants place high among Canada's best dining, such as Weczeria Food & Wine, Duck Duck Goose and Prairie Harvest Café. Along with amazing food and theatre, the city offers beautiful scenery and some amazing running and biking trails along the river. Saskatoon is also known as "The City of Bridges", now with 5 functional bridges connecting the riverbanks. The numerous bridges offers ease of access regardless of where in the city you are, as well as a breath-taking view. In Saskatoon's downtown core, you can find many business establishments, restaurants, shopping, and most notably; The Bessborough Hotel. Also known as the castle on the river, The Besseborough is often an iconic structure in photos of Saskatoon, and helps to set the tone for surrounding parks, hotels and architecture. Growing at a rapid rate, the city has developed several new neighborhoods in the past few years. Stonebridge, Evergreen, Willowgrove, Hampton Village, Rosewood & Blairmore being among a few. Each new development is complete with nearby schools, parks, grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants, allowing for access to all amenities. While these new neighborhoods go up, the older neighborhoods in the city are becoming the focus for infill projects, and are home to many of Saskatoon's cultural, dining and shopping hot spots. Some of these neighborhoods include the beautiful Broadway, Nutana, City Park and Riversdale area. Not being shy with year-round events, the city brings to life some of the best music and cultural festivals in the province. Offering something for all ages, some of Saskatoon's annual festivals include Postash Corp Fringe Festival, Folkfest, Jazz Fest, The Children's Festival & Winter Shines. These festivals bring world-class musicians and performers to the city, drawing a large crowd from communities and cities all across Saskatchewan. In the fall, the city experiences a surge of vibrancy due to the arrival of university students coming to start their studies at the University of Saskatchewan. Located just minutes away from the downtown area, the University of Saskatchewan is one of Canada's most prestigious universities, providing academics in almost every field imaginable. Home to the Husky's Athletics Teams, the University offers great athletic opportunities and scholarships to promising young athletes. Booming with opportunity, culture and beauty, now is a great time to come and pay a visit to the City of Saskatoon. We bet you'll want to stay. Oh Saskatoon drivers...
Oh Saskatoon drivers...
How have I forget about you? I just made a quick trip to my hometown in Saskatoon, SK with total of 1,450km for the whole trip in 2 days. I forgot how drivers in Saskatoon is THAT bad. 1st day; Clip 1 - Huge wrapper or something flying down on the street and I decided to pull over and grab it out of their way. Clip 2 - Forgotten signal. If you watch closely where woman has just crossed the street before Saturn car turns when I honked and she jumped. Sorry! Clip 3 - Stopped to let people cross and this driver has no patient when I have nobody behind me. Typical "yield non-existent to drivers". Clip 4 - Speeding 2nd day; Clip 5 - Driver from the right goes to left. I have my mistake moment there, all the lines were gone and was lost for a bit then found the lane. Clip 6 - Distracted (texting) and honked to get person's attention then made an last second turn. Clip 7 - I have no idea what's going on there. Saturn in front of me sudden goes to wrong side to turn and go past Honda but Honda made an last second turn and almost causing both accidents to Saturn and Volvo coming out of blind lane. Clip 8 - Dodge Ram moves and block me from turning right (not to cheat traffic) then Toyota turns (doesn't bug me as long we keep our speed) and you could see in the left side of the video shows white Chevy blocking the lane. 2 missing clips: Driver coming out of parking lot into street, but doesn't yield to me and nearly t-bone me. Driver want to turn left but assumed lane in wrong side of the road is for left turn where he wanted to be so he got on wrong side of the road and sitting, waiting for lights to change. I've not caught any good clips in Calgary for a long time, and visiting Saskatoon is only way to get a good captures in a few day.- published: 21 Feb 2014

Ezra Levant on Saskatoon's sharia-compliant taxis
Ezra Levant on Saskatoon's sharia-compliant taxis
Guide dogs are not the point. Dogs as pets, alcohol, pork - Muslim cabbies cannot be allowed to dictate what a person may bring into a cab. ========================================= A man who says he and his guide dog have been having trouble with a Saskatoon cab company has filed a complaint with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission. Mike Simmonds says the problem started two months ago when a dispatcher for Comfort Cabs told him he would need a pet-friendly taxi. He says he's been told twice since then that drivers weren't comfortable with his seeing-eye dog because of their religious beliefs. He called the manager to complain and received an apology. Simmonds says the manager suggested there must have been a misunderstanding. The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination against people with service animals. "It baffles me that in this century people have such problems with guide dogs," Simmonds said Friday. "If you're driving a taxi in this country, you have got to know that you're open to service dogs." Cliff Kowbel, operations manager at Comfort Cabs, said that the company continually informs its drivers that working dogs are not pets. He said the company has a policy that the dogs are not to be refused. Simmonds said he was on his way to the airport two weeks ago when he was turned away by a driver who said a larger cab was needed. "I said, 'Here, the suitcase goes in the back or in the trunk and he's designed to go under my feet. We've got to get to the airport.'" Simmonds said he could tell the driver was obviously uncomfortable, so he asked him if he had a problem with dogs. The driver replied that associating with dogs was against his religious beliefs. It was the third time Simmonds was refused a ride that pushed him to file the human rights complaint. He had called ahead for a taxi to pick him and his dog, Graham, up at a bus stop. When the cab didn't show up, he called the dispatcher again. He said she told him she was having a hard time finding a cab for him because of the drivers' religious beliefs. Simmonds had to wait an additional 20 minutes outside for a taxi to come from across the city. "That's where I said, 'Enough is enough. Three strikes, you're out,' and I'll make my pitch." Simmonds said he has never filed a human rights complaint before, but feels he needs to this time to make sure guide dogs are welcome. "I find great offence in people not wanting to let him — and therefore me — into their business. That's wrong." The issue of service dog owners being refused taxi rides has come up recently in Regina as well. Kelly Scherr, the city's director of construction and compliance, says the city is making changes to its taxi bylaw. "We're told that there are some challenges with people being refused trips when they have a service animal with them," Scherr said. "Although there is provincial legislation ... we are bringing our bylaw into line with the provincial legislation just to provide some additional support." Proposed bylaw amendments are to come before council in February.- published: 10 Dec 2013
