The Love Letters of Abelard and Heloise
Pierre ABÉLARD (1079 - 1142) and HÉLOÏSE D'ARGENTEUIL (c.1090 - 1164), translated by ANONYMOUS ( - )
Heloise was a strong-willed and gifted woman who was fluent in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and came from a lower social standing than Abelard. At age 19, and living under her uncle Fulbert's roof, Heloise fell in love with Abelard, who she was studying under. Not only did they have a clandestine affair of a sexual nature, they had a child, Astrolabe, out of wedlock. Discovered by the Fulbert (who was a Church official), Abelard was assaulted by a hired thug and castrated, and Heloise entered a convent. Abelard was exiled to Brittany, where he lived as monk. Eventually Heloise became abbess of the Oratory of the Paraclete, an abbey which Abelard had founded.
It was at this time that they exchanged their famous letters, presented in this book. The letters, originally written in Latin, are passionate both in the remembrance of lost love, and the attempt to reconcile that love with their respective monastic duty to remain chaste. The tension between these two poles generates a huge amount of emotional electricity.

The Story of My Misfortunes (or: Historia Calamitatum)
Pierre ABÉLARD (1079 - 1142), translated by Henry Adams BELLOWS (1803 - 1873)
Autobiographies from remote historical periods can be especially fascinating. Modes of self-presentation vary greatly across the centuries, as of course does the very concept of Self.
Peter Abelard, the medieval philosopher and composer, here gives a concise but vivid survey of his notoriously calamitous life. The work is couched in the form of a letter to an afflicted friend. Abelard's abrasively competitive, often arrogant personality emerges at once in the brief Foreword, where he informs his correspondent: "(I)n comparing your sorrows with mine, you may discover that yours are in truth nought.. and so shall you come to bear them the more easily." (Summary by Martin Geeson)

Hildegard vob Bingen has been called by her admirers ‘one of the most important figures in the history of the Middle Ages,’ and ‘the greatest woman of her time.’ Her time was the 1100s (she was born in 1098), the century of Eleanor of Aquitaine, of Peter Abelard and Bernard of Clairvaux, of the rise of the great universities and the building of Chartres cathedral. She was the daughter of a knight, and when she was eight years old she went to the Benedictine monastery at Mount St Disibode to be educated. The monastery was in the Celtic tradition and housed both men and women (in separate quarters). When Hildegard was eighteen she became a nun. Twenty years later she was made the head of the female community at the monastery. Within the next four years she had a series of visions and devoted the ten years from 1140 to 1150 to writing them down, describing them (this included drawing pictures of what she had seen) and commenting on their interpretation and significance.

Peter Abelard, the medieval philosopher and composer, here gives a concise but vivid survey of his notoriously calamitous life. The work is couched in the form of a letter to an afflicted friend. Abelard wrote a letter to his friend Philantus about his unhappy love affair with Heloise in order to console Philantus who had a similar misfortune. Heloise ended up getting a copy of the letter and wrote back to Abelard about it. Letters were exchanged between the two who lived 300 miles apart. Abelard became a Benedictine Monk and Heloise a nun. These letters are very famous in Christian history.
I think Kierkegaard indirectly discussed these letters in his books. Abelard was all for destroying the passions and promoting reason. Heloise was more for using the passions for the good.
The whole thing was a discussion about Aristotle, Seneca, the Apostle Paul, reason, passion, duty, love and hate. It all ended with devotion. All of this happened between 1079 and 1164 AD. They were translated into English in 1901.

A Brief Story of Peter Abelard tells the story through music of the life and death of Peter Abelard, the medieval philosopher, poet and musician, born in France in 1079. The work is a set of variations on his hymn tune O quanta qualia, each of which paints an episode of Abelard’s life, each identified in the score. Abelard taught at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, lodging with Canon Fulbert who admired his work. In time, he also became tutor to Fulbert's beautiful 17-year-old niece, Heloïse. Abelard and Heloïse began a passionate love affair (Dance of Peter and Heloïse), which resulted in a son, Astrolabe. For the sake of Abelard’s position, they married secretly and Canon Fulbert was present at their marriage. But Fulbert later reacted furiously to news that Abelard had sent Heloïse to a convent, believing that he had abandoned her in favour of his own career. In revenge, he had Abelard castrated (Revenge of Canon Fulbert). After his mutilation, Abelard became a monk, and he and Heloïse remained constant correspondents for the remainder of his life. He composed a hymnbook for Heloïse, who by then was Abbess of the convent of the Paraclete. Among the hymns was a visionary poem of the New Jerusalem set to a beautiful melody in the Dorian mode, O quanta qualia. On his death in 1142, Abelard’s remains were taken to the Paraclete at Heloïse’s request and her body was later laid to rest in the same tomb. Finally, their remains were taken to Paris and in 1817 they were buried together in one sepulchre (In Paradisum). - James Whitbourn

Regie: Otto Kurth
Mit: Lina Carstens, Hans-Helmut Dickow, Kurt Schmidtchen, Gernot Duda und Edwin Noel
Produktion: SDR 1974
Länge: 53'40 (mono)

Cultural theorist Sylvère Lotringer will speak on Antonin Artaud, one of the most influential thinkers of the modernist period. He will discuss his forthcoming book, Mad Like Artaud, and will screen a selection from his new film project, The Man Who Disappeared.
As Lotringer describes, “Actor, dramaturge, poet, art critic, playwright and theorist, Antonin Artaud suffered early on from intense mental and physical dissociations. Arriving in Paris in 1922, he complained that something was destroying his thoughts and robbing him of the words that he had found. And yet these acute mental symptoms, which he controlled as best he could by using opiates, opened up the possibility of investigating ‘all the names of history’ (Nietzsche), ‘performing’ their works and predicament as if they were his own. In that way he managed to become, among others, Paolo Uccello, Pierre Abelard, Heliogabalus, Gérard de Nerval, Baudelaire, Edgar Allen Poe, and Vincent Van Gogh. And these names in turn became his own doubles. The black hole of his identity, from which he suffered so much—Susan Sontag said that Artaud offered the greatest quantity of suffering in the history of literature—also became an irresistible invitation for his readers to become Artaud clones.”
