Navajo Nation Shiprock, NM, President Duane "Chili" Yazzie challenges Navajo Council 12 23 13
During the Navajo Council's Naa'bik'iyati Committee's vote on legislation for Navajo government to co-sign a bond/loan for half a billion dollars for Navajo Transitional Energy Company to have coal mining reclamation insurance and performance insurance because NTEC has no assets and for the New Mexico or Arizona courts to have jurisdiction over all disputes related to the insurances instead of Navajo courts, which also involved the Council's total waiver of Navajo sovereign immunity, Shiprock, N.M., Chapter President Duane "Chili" Yazzie stood up and told the elected officials, "Mr. Chairman, You are out of order! This Council is out of order! I stand in opposition to this circus!" The Council responds by calling the police to remove Chili.from the Council chamber in Window Rock, Ariz., on Dec. 23, 2014.- published: 06 Jan 2014

Not Ready for Change: Navajo Nation's View on Same-Sex Marriage
New Mexico's Supreme Court ruled in December that same-sex marriage was constitutional, and the state began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples across the state. The change has forced the Navajo Nation, which straddles the Arizona and New Mexico border, to reconsider its beliefs on gay rights. For now, the nation's largest Native American reservation isn't observing same-sex marriage, and most Navajo support that. But a few Navajo say the growing acceptance of same-sex marriage across the nation is cause for debate on the reservation.- published: 21 Jan 2014
