Photography has a unique relationship to chance. Anyone who has wielded a camera has taken a picture ruined by an ill-timed blink or enhanced by an unexpected gesture or expression. Although this proneness to chance may amuse the casual photographer, Robin Kelsey points out that historically it has been a mixed blessing for those seeking to make photographic art. On the one hand, it has weakened the bond between maker and picture, calling into question what a photograph can be said to say. On the other hand, it has given photography an extraordinary capacity to represent the unpredictable dynamism of modern life. By delving into these matters, Photography and the Art of Chance transforms our understanding of photography and the work of some of its most brilliant practitioners. The effort to make photographic art has involved a call and response across generations. From the introduction of photography in 1839 to the end of the analog era, practitioners such as William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, Alfred Stieglitz, Frederick Sommer, and John Baldessari built upon and critiqued one another’s work in their struggle to reconcile aesthetic aspiration and mechanical process. The root problem was the technology’s indifference, its insistence on giving a bucket the same attention as a bishop and capturing whatever wandered before the lens. Could such an automatic mechanism accommodate imagination? Could it make art? Photography and the Art of Chance reveals how daring innovators expanded the aesthetic limits of photography to create art for a modern world.

Since Arnaud Claass started his art practice in the 1970’s, he has been central to the advancement of and critical debates around photography in France and Western Europe. His photographs have been exhibited and published widely; equally important are the essays and books he has authored. Claass has mentored and challenged generations of new talent in his role as a founding professor at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie, Arles, France. He has also been a visiting artist and faculty at the International Center of Photography, New York.
601Artspace presents the first major exhibition in the United States to represent four decades of work by Arnaud Claass. American photography and writing have greatly influenced Claass, whose early images resonate with those of Emmet Gowin, Harry Callahan, Robert Frank and Frederick Sommer. Claass’ perceptions of life as captured in his images reveal an intensity given to the moment and its rendering. As a photographer, he absorbs culture and forages for the riches of instantaneous, mysterious, anonymous, personal or political moments. His oeuvre contributes to the dialectic of seeing from within and outside the familiar.
The works exhibited at 601Artspace explore the urban and rural surrounds that Claass haunts in his travels and daily life. Local and intimate settings act as his quarry, particularly those around St. Remy, Provence, where he has photographed the terrain, his wife, Laura, and their children. Later works in color address a continuing shift in his idea of photography as an instrument capable of investigating signs in their physical and semiotic iterations. These works benefit from an ongoing interrogation of authenticity and representation. Recent collage works allow the artist an even greater freedom: he combines pictures and texts to create works that are open to multiple interpretations and scenarios of consciousness.
In addition to the current exhibition, 601Artspace has made a commitment to translate into English Claass’ most recent publication, Of Time in Photography (Du Temps dans la Photographie, Éditions Filigranes, Paris, October 2014). Claass has closely followed theoretical and critical writing from a wide array of artists, writers, philosophers, critics and historians. Of Time in Photography analyzes individual contemporary artworks, considers our assumptions about what is happening when we “trip” the shutter, and suggests that “still” images are less fixed in time than we are accustomed to thinking. Claass deconstructs the digital revolution while remaining optimistic that images can act as conveyors of the real and the imaginary in the face of rapid technological change.
France and the U.S. have enjoyed a remarkably shared terrain in the post-war arts and humanities and, particularly, in photography. Via the works of Arnaud Claass, we are witness to a singular and original encounter between these two cultures. Seeing across the pond is not so hard after all.

[dt.]
***** [en.] Innsbruck, the capital of the federal state Tyrol is the fifth largest city in Austria with more than 121.300 inhabitants
The first traces of settlements in the Innsbruck date back to the Neolithic.1420 Duke Frederick IV, nicknamed "with empty pockets", made Innsbruck his residence and had the Hofgarten, a protected park, laid out. After the death of Frederick IV, his son Sigismund, called in Tyrol 'rich in coin', was under the guardianship of his uncle Kaiser Frederick III. who could make good use of the income of rich Tyrol for a long time. Only after the Tyroleans threatened him with the rebellion, Sigismund 1446 could take over the reign. Due to his dissipated lifestyle the same persons, however, forced Sigismund 1490 to resign and king Maximilian I. took over the government and became Emperor in 1493.
Innsbruck owes Maximilian I. the "Golden Roof", a magnificent oriel with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles, which he had built at the turn of the century, to create a striking symbol of the golden age which was to begin. Today it is the landmark of city.
Innsbruck was venue of the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and in 1976.
At Bergisel, the local mountain of Innsbruck, a statue reminds of Andreas Hofer, whom his ultimate loyalty to the emperor, at the end cost his life.
Ferdinand II purchased and rebuilt Castle Ambrass, in the southeast of Innsbruck, for his Chamber of Art and Curiosities as well as his portrait and armouries collection.
