There is no way for me to fully describe Augustus Caesar in the ten minutes or so that I was allowed for class, so I added a few "Fast Facts" to give the viewer a brief understanding of the time period below are a few paragraphs about Roman politics and the army, as well as a timeline of Augustus' life. When Augustus was born (Octavius at the time) Rome was a republic, governed by the Senate. Offices in the Senate included: Consul: the highest position and presiding officer over the Senate; two elected annually Praetor: overseer of the military, as well as the court systems and civil defense; eight elected annually Aedile: overseer of religious celebrations and public events Quaestor: lowest rank of officer, typically given duties relating to the treasury Tribune: a representative of the plebian classes (the People), with the authority to veto any legislation passed by the Senate, or another Tribune. 10 were elected annually. A Brief Introduction to the Roman Army: The army of Rome was organized into Legions, units of approximately 5000 men. At the time of the Republic, there were dozens of legions; Antony alone commanded 40, placing near 200,000 men at his disposal, while Octavian had close to the same number. The Roman navy was composed of vessels called triremes and quinquiremes, which primarily used the method of ramming other ships using a bronze prow, called a rostra, at the bow of the ship.
