According to Reuters, "It was unclear who had carried out the attack, but previous similar operations have always been claimed by the Islamist Taliban. "A gun battle raged for more than an hour as security services pursued up to 10 militants, said Masood Bangash, deputy superintendent of police in Sukkur. "The city headquarters of the Pakistani military intelligence service, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), seemed to be the main target, police Deputy Inspector General Javeed Odho said. "A security official said five attackers had been killed along with a civilian and an ISI employee. "An attack of such intensity on a high-profile and supposedly secure target is the latest of series of demonstrations of militants' ability to strike at Pakistan's centers of power." Local sources said ISI official Major Zeeshan was the intended target of the attack. The villagers knew an attack was coming, so they used the dark of night to ambush the suspected Boko Haram militants, killing scores and arresting at least 10 in a move to deter the extremists and make future attacks "impossible."Vigilante groups have been springing up in north Nigeria over the past year amid accusations the military is not acting fast enough against the Islamic extremists who are holding captive more than 270 schoolgirls.In Kalabalge, a village about 250 kilometers (155 miles) from the Borno state capital of Maiduguri, where the terrorist network was born, residents said they took matters into their own hands.On Tuesday morning, after learning about an impending attack by the militants, villagers ambushed two trucks with gunmen, residents and a security official told The Associated Press. At least 10 militants were detained, and scores were killed, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to give interviews to journalists. It was not immediately clear where the detainees were being held.Kalabalge trader Ajid Musa said that after residents organized the vigilante group, "it is impossible" for militants to successfully stage attacks there."That is why most attacks by the Boko Haram on our village continued (to) fail because they cannot come in here and start shooting and killing people," he said. The operation was launched on Monday afternoon in the Tunis suburb of Raoued, near the capital's luxury beach resorts. The area was cordoned off by police as armoured vehicles filled the streets. After receiving a tip-off about militants holing up in a building, special units of the National Guard were dispatched to surround the structure. The militants were heavily armed and wore bomb belts, Reuters reported. A large amount of ammunition was later found in the house. The operation came to a standstill after police and militants exchanged gunfire and militants refused to turn themselves in. Tunisian forces broke the stalemate by storming into the besieged house. In the final firefight, seven militants and one policeman were killed. Interior Minister Lofti Ben Jeddou told reporters at a news conference that one of the militants killed was Kamel Ghadghadi, a leader of the radical Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia, who had been wanted for killing seven soldiers. Declared a terrorist group by Washington, Ansar al-Sharia has pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda. The Tunisian authorities have not announced the identities of the militants.
