Bosnia Flooding Triggers Landslides, Unearth Mines | BREAKING NEWS - 19 MAY 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Floodwaters triggered more than 3,000 landslides across the Balkans on Sunday, laying waste to entire towns and villages and disturbing land mines leftover from the region's 1990s war, along with warning signs that marked the unexploded weapons. The Balkans' worst flooding since record keeping began forced tens of thousands of people from their homes and threatened to inundate Serbia's main power plant, which supplies electricity to a third of the country and most of the capital, Belgrade. Authorities organized a frenzied helicopter airlift to get terrified families to safety before the water swallowed up their homes. Many were plucked from rooftops. Floodwaters receded Sunday in some locations, laying bare the full scale of the damage. Elsewhere, emergency management officials warned that the water would keep rising into Sunday night. "The situation is catastrophic," said Bosnia's refugee minister, Adil Osmanovic. Three months' worth of rain fell on the region in three days, producing the worst floods since rainfall measurements began 120 years ago. At least two dozen people have died, with more casualties expected. The rain caused an estimated 2,100 landslides that covered roads, homes and whole villages throughout hilly Bosnia. Another 1,000 landslides were reported in neighboring Serbia. The cities of Orasje and Brcko in northeast Bosnia, where the Sava River forms the natural border with Croatia, were in danger of being overwhelmed. Officials in Brcko ordered six villages to be evacuated. Rescuers urged people to go to the balconies or rooftops of their houses with bright fabric to make themselves visible. Brcko Mayor Anto Domic said that unless the Bosnian Army is able to reinforce from the air, the city will be flooded completely. He called for the Defense Ministry to use helicopters to lower steel barriers that could be backed by sandbags to contain the water. "It is a very demanding task," he said, acknowledging that officials would have no other way to protect the port city of more than 70,000. Civil protection commander Fahrudin Solak said the Sava River was spilling over another portion of the flood barrier in Orasje while emergency workers tried desperately to reinforce it with sandbags. UN Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic told the BBC that the crisis had worrying echoes of the 1990s war in his native Croatia. Reports from eastern Ukraine say clashes between government forces and separatist militants have continued. The separatists have not taken part in EU-brokered talks to defuse the crisis. On Saturday, they appointed a prime minister for what they call the People's Republic of Donetsk. The man, Alexandr Borodai. said the self-proclaimed entity would apply to join Russia. Croatians reject gay marriage in referendum-Croatia gay marriage said 'No'
Croatians reject gay marriage in referendum-Croatia gay marriage said 'No'
Croats voted overwhelmingly in favour of defining marriage in the constitution as a "union of man and woman" yesterday (1 December), a move initiated by Roman Catholic groups but criticised by opponents as discrimination against homosexuals. The Commission declined to comment, saying that the issue of marriage is of national competence. Almost 66% of those who voted in the referendum in the new European Union member endorsed the initiative, launched by the Catholic group "In the Name of the Family", according to preliminary results on Sunday night. Turnout was 37%. The group had gathered over 740,000 signatures in support of the referendum, forcing parliament to call the vote. The Social Democrat-led government disagreed with the referendum's demand, but the outcome was no surprise in a morally conservative country where 90% of the population of 4.4 million say they are Catholic. The Church wholeheartedly backed the initiative, which sought to define marriage in the constitution rather than law so that its status can only be changed by a two-thirds majority in parliament. "I am happy because, from now on, no future government will be able to legalise gay marriages," said Željka Markić, leader of "In the Name of the Family". Ballet dancer Sanja Grgic said: "I have nothing against gay people, I have many gay friends, but I voted in favour because I think children should grow up in a family that has a mother and a father." Opponents noted that Croatia now shares its constitutional definition of marriage with Belarus, Poland, Moldova, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Serbia, where intolerance of same-sex unions is widespread. Sex education "This is discrimination, an attack on human rights and liberties. It's a stain we'll all have to carry," said Duje Prkut, one of the main activists in the 'Against' camp. The campaign for the referendum began last year after the government introduced sex education in schools despite protests from Catholic groups. It then hinted that it might grant same-sex couples the right to be treated as if they were married, with next-of-kin status and inheritance rights, albeit without allowing them to formally marry. Prime Minister Zoran Milanović had called the referendum "sad and pointless", but said the government would pass a bill giving same-sex couples more rights in the coming weeks. While gay pride marches have become routine in Croatia, same-sex couples still face many practical challenges. "Right now, I have no right to inherit my girlfriend's property, we cannot adopt children or get married, I could not visit her if she ended up in an old people's home," said Marta Susak, a 21-year-old student who came to vote holding hands with her girlfriend. Leaders of the conservative opposition HDZ party supported the referendum demand. Some analysts said this was the start of a conservative backlash against the increasingly unpopular government, which has failed to revive the withering economy. "This vote is not about marriage or the definition of marriage, this is a referendum against the current government," Davor Butkovic, an influential columnist, wrote in the pro-government Jutarnji List daily before the referendum. The Commission declined to comment, saying that the issue of marriage is of national competence of the member states. In fact, in the pre-accession period the commission puts a lot of pressure on candidate countries regarding LGBT rights, but as the countries join the Union, Brussels keeps silent on the matter. POSITIONS: Hannes Swoboda, president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament expressed "deep disappointment" at the results of the vote: "As democrats, we of course respect the decision of the Croatian voters. But I am deeply disappointed by this outcome. I have come to know Croatia as an open and progressive country, not a country whose people outlaw happiness and equal rights. The extreme right and the religious groups that lobbied in favour of this constitutional amendment must urgently confront the reality: LGBT rights, equality and human rights are all part of a bigger concept of fundamental rights and values shared by Europeans. I expect Croatia to share these values, especially now that it is an EU member state. I welcome the fact that the government under Zoran Milanović has made clear that it will continue its work to increase the rights of same-sex couples." The European Parliament's Intergroup on LGBT rights expressed "regret at the outcome of the referendum banning same-sex marriage". Michael Cashman, co-president of the Intergoup reacted: ""Given the organisation of this referendum by the Catholic Church, I am saddened—but not surprised—by the outcome. But this result will not stop progressive, democratic and inclusive movements in Croatia. Equality is a defining element of a civilised and inclusive society."- published: 02 Dec 2013

Timelapse Croatia - showreel / teaser
[[EDIT]]
Just a few words, since we've been flooded with questions, comments, e-mails, tweets etc.
First of all, thanks to everyone on such really overwhelmingly positive reactions!
The movie you're about to see is a preview of what we would like to do, in regards of representing Croatia as a destination in a different way.
No one commissioned us to do this, we put our own work, time, gear, money and ideas into it. Because of this we chose the locations, the editing and music as we saw fit.
Of course, what we ended up putting in this video is merely a fragment of what Croatia has to offer. As photographers who have traveled across our country from one end to another, we are well aware that there is so much more to be filmed. And we are more than happy to do it - after all, we're two guys who really love their job. It's simply that the pace at which we can finish this project will depend mostly on if we can get financial support, or we'll have to figure out some other way to pull this off.
Explaining timelapse technique to an average person, or a potential client can be very hard. Even most of our colleagues have no real sense of how demanding timelapses can be. So we decided to skip on the whining and tried to show what timelapse is really about and how visually attractive it can be.
Almost a full year of work went into this. Months and months of work and hundreds of thousands photographs for a few minutes of video. Sounds silly, but that's basically how it is. For example, we spent last 3 months literally sitting at our workstations editing and rendering frame after frame, shot after shot, location after location. Crazy people :)
So, if by the end of this year we end up with another 4 minutes of worthwhile material, we'll be more than happy to share!
Until then, lay back, relax and enjoy!
