Multiracial Americans are Americans who identify themselves as of "two or more races", as well as mono-racial identified Americans of mixed race ancestry. They were numbered at around 9 million, or 2.9% of the population, in the census of 2010. However there is considerable evidence that the real number is far higher. Prior to the mid-20th century many people hid their multiracial heritage. Consequently many Americans today are multi-racial without necessarily knowing it.

Since the 1967 Supreme Court decision that deemed anti-miscegenation laws unconstitutional, there has been a considerable increase in the number of interracial couples and mixed-race children. Until 1989, children continued to be classified as belonging to the race of the non-white parent, reflecting historical hypodescent laws. Since the 1980s, the United States has had a growing multiracial identity movement. The 2000 census for the first time allowed residents to identify as multiracial by checking more than one ethnicity. In 2008 Barack Obama was elected as the first President of the United States with an acknowledged multiracial background; he identifies as African American.

Sharon Carpenter (born March 2, 1982 in Watford, United Kingdom) is a broadcast journalist who is best known for her work as a news anchor and reporter for Black Entertainment Television and BET International. She was the first British TV personality to represent the networks. Before her on-air position at BET, Carpenter reported for the financial news show CBS MarketWatch Weekend. She began her journalism career as an associate producer for UPN 9 News and later became a producer for BET Nightly News. Carpenter is a contributing correspondent for BBC World News America.

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964) is the wife of the 44th and incumbent President of the United States, Barack Obama, and is the first African-American First Lady of the United States. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Obama attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School before returning to Chicago and to work at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met her future husband. Subsequently, she worked as part of the staff of Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley, and for the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Throughout 2007 and 2008, she helped campaign for her husband's presidential bid and delivered a keynote address at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. She is the mother of two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and is the sister of Craig Robinson, men's basketball coach at Oregon State University. As the wife of a Senator, and later the First Lady, she has become a fashion icon and role model for women, and an advocate for poverty awareness, nutrition and healthy eating.

Kip Fulbeck is an American artist, spoken word performer, filmmaker and author. Fulbeck's work explores identity politics.

His mixed race ethnic background is Cantonese, English, Irish, and Welsh. He is best known for his work addressing Hapa and multiracial identity, and as the creator of The Hapa Project.

Fulbeck attended UCLA, Dartmouth College, and the University of California, San Diego, where he was a four-year NCAA All-American Swimmer and 1988 Athlete of the Year. He earned his MFA from UCSD in 1992.

Fulbeck's artwork includes video, spoken word, photography and slam poetry. He has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries, and has been featured on CNN, MTV, PBS, and The Today Show. He has directed twelve films (including Banana Split; Some Questions for 28 Kisses; Sex, Love, & Kung Fu; and Lilo & Me), published four books, and keynoted scores of conferences and festivals nationwide. He is a prominent speaker on the college circuit.

Much of Fulbeck's work is autobiographical, combining personal stories with political activism, pop culture and stand-up comedy.

African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans or Afro-Americans, and formerly as American Negroes) are citizens or residents of the United States that have ancestry from any of the native populations of Sub-Saharan Africa.

African Americans make up the single largest racial minority in the United States. Most African Americans are of West and Central African descent and are descendants of enslaved Africans within the boundaries of the present United States. However, some immigrants from African, Caribbean, Central American or South American nations, or their descendants, may be identified or self-identify with the term.

African-American history starts in the 16th century with African slaves who quickly rose up against the Spanish explorer Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón and progresses to the present day, with Barack Obama as the 44th and current President of the United States. Between those landmarks there have been events and issues, both resolved and ongoing, including slavery, racism, Reconstruction, development of the African-American community, participation in the great military conflicts of the United States, racial segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement.
