Faysal ibn Husayn of the House of Hashim was proclaimed King of Greater Syria on 8 March 1920 in Damascus, following the Arab revolt against the Ottomans of 1916--1918. His accession was not recognized by France or the United Kingdom, the two new imperial powers in the region, and on 23 July 1920 the French moved 9000 troops towards Damascus resulting in the Battle of Maysalun. Faisal was expelled from Syria on 25 July and took exile in the United Kingdom. On 10 August, the Treaty of Sèvres divided the region into League of Nations mandates governed by France and the United Kingdom. Following mass revolts in Mesopotamia, the British government decided to step back from direct administration and create a monarchy to head Iraq while they maintained the mandate. Faisal agreed to become King following a referendum showing 96% in favour, and on 23 August 1921, Faisal was crowned King of Iraq.- published: 27 Nov 2013

King of the Sands: Controversial Syrian Film on Saudi Arabia's Founder Shown in Syria + Trailer
"King of the Sands", a film by Syrian director Najdat Anzour, is now being shown in Syrian movie theaters after high-level Saudi officials tried to prevent its showing. The film is a biopic of the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abdul Aziz ibn Saud, and is considered as the first film to do so, as the subject has been considered a taboo for Saudis. The director states that the root cause of the phenomenon of Wahhabi terrorism that is spreading in the entire world can be traced back to the beginnings of the Saud dynasty. The Pope and the King of Jordan: Dialogue for Syria
Pope Francis on August 29th received the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, and his wife, Queen Rania. Several themes were touched upon, including the negotiations which have resumed between Israelis and Palestinians, and on the question of Jerusalem. Particular attention was given to the crisis in Syria. It was said that the path of dialogue and negotiation between all components of Syrian society, with the support of the international community, is the only option for putting an end to the conflict and the violence which every day claims many lives, including the helpless civilian population. Also during meetings, King Abdullah was commended for his commitment in the field of interreligious dialogue, i ...- published: 09 Oct 2013

Conflict in Syria - preparing the way for the King of the North
Conflict in Syria - preparing the way for the King of the North
As the conflict in Syria heats up, we examine the role of the area in the light of the Bible Prophecy of a coming temporary peace and then full on conflict, which will lead to the manifestation of Christ to the nations of the world. This is the Bible in the News and I am Matt Davies joining you. The coming Temporary Peace in Israel The Bible tells us that soon, Israel will have a temporary peace with its neighbours. Ezekiel 38 is a prophecy all about the "latter days" (v8 and v16) - a phrase which is used in the Bible to describe the time period of the Jews being regathered as a nation (see Hosea 3:5). This time period relates directly to our time - as - since 1948 - Israel has indeed once again become inhabited by the Jews. In these latter days we read in Ezekiel 38 of a massive invasion of the land of Israel just prior to the return of Christ. Some of the details that surround this indicate that Israel is at peace during this time. For example : In v8 it says that the regathered Jews "shall dwell safely all of them". In v11 it says that the invading army comes against a land whose inhabitants "dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls and having neither bars not gates". It is an amazing fact that today, when you travel around the land of Israel you find that the majority of Israeli settlements, known as Kibbutz all have fences and walls around them, as well as large, yellow gates and watch towers. Clearly things have to change - both internally between the Jews and the Palestinians and also externally between Israel and her neighbouring countries. One of these countries is of course Syria, which lies to the North of Israel. The invading powers However seeing that Ezekiel 38 is a prophecy of the invasion of Israel, the peace that will come can only be temporary. The invasion will take place, not by one single nation, but by a group of territories listed by their ancient names in verses 2-6. These nations will be headed up by a character called "Gog" and when the ancient names of the territories are traced back to their roots you find they describe the powers that sit on the areas of Russia, Europe and Northern Africa. Russia is directly mentioned in verse 3 by its ancient name of "Rosh". This is evident by modern translations of this verse - such as the New King James Version which translates verse 3 as: "and say, Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal". All of these ancient names relate to the peoples of Russia. Also included within the list of powers is the name "Persia" in v5. When you look back at the ancient territory of Persia you will discover that this covers the countries of modern: Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan - these territories are the "Persia" of Ezekiel 38:5. Syria - part of the territory of the "King of the North". So as Bible students, we would expect these countries who are hostile to Israel to become less of an issue for a limited time. How might this situation occur and are there any other Bible prophecies which include these territories in the latter days? Well Daniel chapter 11 helps to shed some light upon this. Daniel 11 is an amazing prophecy about two key territories down through time which would be taken over by occupying powers known as "the king of the north" and "the king of the south". The start of the prophecy is the time period of the Medo-Persian Empire (approx 550BC) but the final focus of the prophecy is the same time period as that of Ezekiel. We know this because in Daniel chapter 10 we read these words spoken by an angel to the prophet Daniel: "I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days." Daniel 10:14 In other words he is going to show Daniel what would happen in the same time period in which Ezekiel 38 occurs. The angel then proceeds in chapter 11 to show Daniel that eventually the then current superpower, the Persian Empire, would be superseded by the Greeks in v2. The angel explains in v3 that a mighty king of the Greeks would emerge on the world scene and we know this to have been Alexander the Great. Then the angel explains how that the territory would be split up into four areas and again we know from history that this occurred when Alexander's four generals eventually took control of the Greek Empire.- published: 19 Sep 2013

Ground Zero Syria: Chapter 1 (Parts 1-6)
In 2012 VICE commissioned photographer and videographer Robert King to document the civil war that has been ravaging Syria for the past two years. Largely based on Aleppo, Robert's footage of the violent conflict that continues to unfold in the region is perhaps one of the most thorough and brutally honest documents of a war that is increasingly destabilizing the Middle East as it spills over into neighboring Turkey and Lebanon. This full-length version of Ground Zero: Syria combines all six parts of our series to offer a startling glimpse into a chaotic war with no clear end in sight. Salahuddin Al Ayubi- The King of Jerusalem, Syria, Egypt!
Salahuddin Al Ayubi- The King of Jerusalem, Syria, Egypt!
Salahuddin Ayyubi, popularly known in the West as Saladin, was a courageous and brilliant Muslim leader during the 12th century. His firm foundation in the religion and its prime values, leading to his commitment to the Islamic cause, enabled him to accomplish great things. His Ayyubid Empire united Egypt and Syria. Above all, he played an instrumental role in turning the tide against the Crusaders by successfully reclaiming Jerusalem and earned a name for himself in the books of both Muslim and Western history. Saladin was born in 1137 AD in Tikrit, Iraq, and studied the Quran and theology along with astronomy, mathematics, and law. He joined the military as a young man and was ably trained by his uncle Asad-al-Din Shirkoh, a commander of the Zengid Dynasty. Saladin's impressive performance in his early battles enabled him to take on leading responsibilities during military campaigns. His rise from a soldier to the King of Egypt and Syria was the result of both cleverly executed tactics and advantageous circumstances. He held key posts in Egypt, enabling him to consolidate power and overthrow the Fatimids. Syria, at the time, was ruled by the Zengids; when the Zengid ruler unexpectedly died, leaving an underage successor, the road was eventually cleared for Saladin to capture Syria. During his reign, Saladin built many schools, hospitals, and institutions in his quest for intellectual and civic achievements. He was also determined to bring justice, peace, and prosperity to those within his domain. Salahuddin is best known for repelling the Crusaders and reconquering Jerusalem. He defeated and decimated large numbers of the Crusaders in the decisive Battle of Hattin in July, 1187. On his way to Jerusalem, Saladin conquered almost every Crusader city. After a siege, Jerusalem was handed over to him in October of the same year. Subsequent efforts by the Crusaders to win back Jerusalem were resisted until they finally gave up and retreated homewards. Although one would expect Saladin to be hated among the Crusader nations, he became one of the most esteemed Muslim figures of the medieval Islamic world because of the generosity he displayed towards the Christians despite the brutality Muslims had endured at the hands of the Crusaders. When the Christians had overtaken Jerusalem during the very first Crusade, they carried out mass atrocities and killings, creating a bloodbath in which the Muslim residents were the most prominent targets, as graphically documented in the PBS series Islam: Empire of Faith. In the words of the chronicler of Crusades, Raymond of Agiles, the massacre was so extensive that the Crusaders "rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins." When Saladin retook Jerusalem, the Christians waited for a similar onslaught. However, Salahuddin not only spared the Christians but treated them honorably, allowing those who wished to leave to do so in peace, and for those who wished to stay to do so in harmony. Truly, he was a living example of the tolerant, progressive, and inclusive faith which was so dear to his heart. By showing restraint and peaceful treatment, Salahuddin was upholding the central tenets of Islam such as freedom of religion and protection of non-Muslims. Moreover, his chivalrous conduct toward King Richard I, and the mutual respect which ensued despite their warring roles, won him further accolades in quarters that could not bring themselves to despise him. "When Richard falls sick at the siege of Acre in 1192, Saladin not only sends his personal physician Maimonides over to treat him, he sends ice to help him fight the fevers and certain healing fruits. When Richard's horse is killed during battle, and the English king finds himself on foot facing the entire Muslim army, the Muslims let him walk by their entire phalanx without attacking. Later, Saladin sends him two fresh mounts so he will not be at a disadvantage," wrote Michael Hamilton Morgan in Lost History. According to the French historian, Rene Grousset, "It is equally true that [Saladin's] generosity, his piety, devoid of fanaticism, that flower of liberality and courtesy, which had been the model of our old chroniclers, won him no less popularity in Frankish Syria than in the lands of Islam." Salahuddin Ayyubi died in 1193 AD at the age of 56. Although he was at the helm of a vast empire stretching from Egypt to Syria, he himself owned very little. At the time of his death, his property and assets included a horse and money which was not sufficient even to bury him. He had devoted his entire life to the service of Islam and his subjects, avoiding the pomp and splendor which often distract rulers. Indeed, he was the epitome of a true hero and a devoted Muslim.- published: 26 Nov 2013

Peter King Barack Obama Has Right to Attack Syria Without Congress Fox News Aug 28 2013
New York Congressman Peter King affirmed to Fox News Wednesday morning that President Barack Obama had the constitutional right to conduct military operations against Syria without congressional approval, but stopped short of defending Obama's intervention strategy or foreign policy in general. "Presidents have done that consistently," King said, citing Ronald Reagan's actions in Grenada and Bill Clinton's in Kosovo. "Now, if he's smart, [Obama] would certainly consult with the House and Senate leaders, with the top people on the Intelligence Committee, the Armed Services Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee. But he doesn't have to. As the Commander in Chief I believe strongly the president has the constitutional right to carry this out." Host Bill Hemmer quoted Obama's statement as a Senator, in which he explicitly stated that a president does not have the right to leapfrog Congress if there is no pressing threat to the United States. "The hardest thing to do with President Obama is to keep track of what he says from one day to the next," King said. "I'm not here to defend President Obama, I'm just here to defend the office of the presidency." "I have real problems with the way the president has handled this from the beginning," King added. "I'm really not defending his policy. I'm saying he has the right to carry out the attack. Attacks have to be carried out. But there has to be an endgame. It can't be just a one or two or three day feel-good thing so he can soothe his conscience."- published: 18 Oct 2013

What would Martin Luther King Jr. say about Obama's war with Syria?
What would Martin Luther King Jr. say about Obama's war with Syria?
Secretary of State John Kerry has advised that President Barack Obama is preparing for possible military strikes in Syria. The strikes are a response to the president's threats a year ago that if Syria used chemical weapons, it would be "a red line." News reports are claiming that the president is preparing for possible missile strikes from the Mediterranean where we have four destroyers stationed. All this on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's March on Washington. Everyone is questioning whether or not the president would live up to the legacy of Dr. King and the timing of the conflict gives us a perfect glimpse as to whether or not he truly would. President Obama lacks the constitutional authority to initiate an act of war without a vote of congress. However he will be continuing the policies of previous Executives and ignoring the constitutional mandate. The United States is likely to receive a substantial amount of blowback from the intervention. Half of the rebels are reported to be Al Qaeda and could either lay claim to Bashar al-Assad's weapon stockpile, or take American weapons & aid and use them in future terrorist attacks.
