The Warriors of Sparta
The Warriors of Sparta
Sparta (Doric Greek: Σπάρτα, Spártā; Attic Greek: Σπάρτη, Spártē), or Lacedaemon,[pronunciation?] was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, situated on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. It emerged as a political entity around the 10th century BC, when the invading Dorians subjugated the local, non-Dorian population. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece. Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the overall leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars. Between 431 and 404 BC, Sparta was the principal enemy of Athens during the Peloponnesian War, from which it emerged victorious, though at great cost. Sparta's defeat by Thebes in the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC ended Sparta's prominent role in Greece. However, it maintained its political independence until the Roman conquest of Greece in 146 BC. It then underwent a long period of decline, especially in the Middle Ages, when many Spartans moved to live in Mystras. Modern Sparta is the capital of the Greek regional unit of Laconia and a center for the processing of goods such as citrus and olives. Sparta was unique in ancient Greece for its social system and constitution, which completely focused on military training and excellence. Its inhabitants were classified as Spartiates (Spartan citizens, who enjoyed full rights), Mothakes (non-Spartan free men raised as Spartans), Perioikoi (freedmen), and Helots (state-owned serfs, enslaved non-Spartan local population). Spartiates underwent the rigorous agoge training and education regimen, and Spartan phalanges were widely considered to be among the best in battle. Spartan women enjoyed considerably more rights and equality to men than elsewhere in the classical world. Sparta was the subject of fascination in its own day, as well as in the West following the revival of classical learning. This love or admiration of Sparta is known as Laconism or Laconophilia. Names The earliest attested term referring to Lacedaemon is the Mycenaean Greek ra-ke-da-mi-ni-jo, "Lacedaimonian", written in Linear B syllabic script and transliterated as Λακεδαιμόνιος (Lakedaimonios) in the Greek alphabet.- published: 15 Dec 2013

Battle of Thermopylae: This is SPARTA! | History Channel Documentary
The Battle of Thermopylae (/θərˈmɒpɨliː/ thər-MOP-i-lee; Greek: μάχη τῶν Θερμοπυλῶν, machē tōn Thermopylōn) was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I over the course of three days, during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae ('The Hot Gates'). The Persian invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, which had been ended by the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Xerxes had amassed a huge army and navy, and set out to conquer all of Greece. The Athenian general Themistocles had proposed that the allied Greeks block the advance of the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae, and simultaneously block the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium. A Greek force of approximately 7,000 men marched north to block the pass in the summer of 480 BC. The Persian army, alleged by the ancient sources to have numbered over one million but today considered to have been much smaller (various figures are given by scholars ranging between about 100,000 and 150,000),[7][8] arrived at the pass in late August or early September. The vastly outnumbered Greeks held off the Persians for seven days (including three of battle) before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands. During two full days of battle the small force led by King Leonidas I of Sparta blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day of battle a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a small path that led behind the Greek lines. Leonidas, aware that his force was being outflanked, dismissed the bulk of the Greek army and remained to guard the rear with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans and perhaps a few hundred others, most of whom were killed. After this engagement the Greek navy, under the command of the Athenian politician Themistocles, at Artemisium received news of the defeat at Thermopylae. Since the Greek's strategy required both Thermopylae and Artemisium to be held, and given their losses, the withdrawal to Salamis was decided. The Persians overran Boeotia and then captured the evacuated Athens. The Greek fleet, seeking a decisive victory over the Persian armada, attacked and defeated the invaders at the Battle of Salamis in late 480 BC. Fearful of being trapped in Europe, Xerxes withdrew with much of his army to Asia (losing most to starvation and disease), leaving Mardonius to attempt to complete the conquest of Greece. The following year, however, saw a Greek army decisively defeat the Persians at the Battle of Plataea, thereby ending the Persian invasion. Both ancient and modern writers have used the Battle of Thermopylae as an example of the power of a patriotic army defending native soil. The performance of the defenders at the battle of Thermopylae is also used as an example of the advantages of training, equipment, and good use of terrain as force multipliers and has become a symbol of courage against overwhelming odds.- published: 18 Jun 2013

The game was developed by British studio Creative Assembly , which is responsible for its previous parts ( eg Shogun , Medieval or Empire ) and a few other titles (Viking : Battle for Asgard , Stormrise ) . After the Napoleonic Wars , and attempt to unite feudal Japan Series takes players back to ancient Rome. In Total War: Rome II takes on the leader of the Roman state (or any other country ), which is to fight for power and territorial domination . In an open campaign that can be played in a turn-based system , we can define the style of governance and conquer other provinces to develop their own estates . The historical period covers the ages , starting with the creation of the Roman Republic . With the passage of time the player can decide whether to defend the republic or empire from Rome to do . In this turbulent period wise leader expects to attack from all sides - even existing friends. The player must take into account the pervasive treachery , because the gameplay puts heavy emphasis on the relationship between influential personalities . The strategy map is divided into hundreds of regions grouped into larger provinces. Each region must separately raise, but management is done on a scale of entire province - thanks to this solution , the player does not lose time to deal with too much detail , but instead can take the policy for the area and focus on commanding armies . In addition to the command from the perspective of strategic map , repeatedly lead our troops into battle fought in real time , often involving tens of thousands of soldiers. They can take part in them at the same time both ground units and fleet . This presents interesting tactical possibilities - for example, ships armed with catapults protecting soldiers landing on the beach. Battles begin in different ways , depending on the circumstances , such as the previously mentioned landing on the beach. Although the spacing of the branches in the field has not disappeared , the creators decided to be made more flexible. There is also received various siege engines - catapults, ballista siege towers , battering rams and more. Facilitated by the commanding armies in battle is a new view of the camera. At any time, you can be dismissed - observe the battlefield from above and our units are shown in a simplified icons. Due to the size of the city , the gain is not limited to keep the central square for a few minutes. Fighting continues in different districts , and take control of the metropolis requires doing some dynamically allocated targets. Total War: Rome II uses the updated graphics engine Warscape engine , reviewers smallest details clashes . The game allows you to literally put the camera over the shoulder of individual soldiers - be turned into the third-person perspective , and the picture sometimes shakes like a good action movie . The creators put a lot of emphasis on the great detail of characters - each of them has its own skeleton animation and facial expressions . Duels between fighters were designed based on authentic techniques of ancient fighting styles - the soldiers stabbing , avoid enemy strikes , attacking enemies shield. Cutscenes before that larger battles have been developed game engine , and the generals speak to his subordinates. Also the environment was given with great diligence - the city has a specific architecture of the region , the walls are covered with paintings , buildings are crumbling under siege catapults , smoke disperses sunlight and equipment is destroyed and fighting dirty . Conquered the city change the appearance of the strategic map - you can see the approximate ruined buildings , dead bodies and vultures circling above them . The game is back multiplayer mode in which players wage war with each individual battle or run entire campaigns- published: 03 Sep 2013
