Graham Priest - Paradoxes and Paraconsistent Logic
Can a statement be simultaneously true and false? That might seem like sheer nonsense to you -- but not to certain modern logicians. In this episode Massimo and Julia are joined again by philosopher and logician Graham Priest, who explains why we have to radically revise our notions of "true" and "false." In the process, he explains classic puzzlers like the "barber paradox": "In a village, the barber shaves all men who do not shave themselves. Does he shave himself?" Follow along for an episode that really takes to heart the podcast's tagline: exploring the borderlands between reason and nonsense.- published: 03 Sep 2013

Graham Priest and Maureen Eckert - Deviant Logic
Graham Priest and Maureen Eckert - Deviant Logic
According to classical systems of logic, anything follows from a contradiction: the relation of logical consequence is explosive. But recent decades have seen growing interest in "deviant," paraconsistent systems that include non-explosive relations of logical consequence. Further, some deviant logicians, such as Priest, assert the existence of dialetheias (true contradictions). In this conversation, Eckert and Priest discuss whether and how deviant logic should be studied in the undergraduate classroom. Then (starting at 29:40) they look for dialetheias in the areas of emotions, legal norms, and contradictory fictions.- published: 02 Sep 2013

Lesson 3: Vagueness. Logic and Paradoxes. University of Navarra MOOC
MOOC by Pablo Cobreros. This lesson discusses about the concept of truth or, more precisely, the possibility of expressing that concept. We read and discuss the Philosophy Compass paper of Hannes Leitgeb 'What Theories of Truth Should be Like (but Cannot be)'. The logical part of this lesson considers what happens with languages enjoying self-reference and a "transparent" truth predicate. While these languages lead to inconsistency in classical logic, due to the Liar paradox, the problematic reasoning can be blocked in LP and K3. We discuss the extension of tableaux for K3 and LP in this context. We finally read and discuss the Mind paper by Cobreros, Egré, Ripley and van Rooij in which a new solution to the Liar paradox is presented which overcomes serious limitations of both K3 and LP based approaches.- published: 20 Sep 2013
