Marvin Hamlisch, a Mensch | American Masters | PBS
Marvin Hamlisch is a mensch. What is a mensch? The term comes from the Yiddish, for "human being," but is used to describe a person of integrity and honor. Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love premieres nationally Friday, December 27, 2013 at 9 p.m. on PBS. For more, visit: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/ The Oscar- Grammy- and Tony Award-winning musician and composer offered his genuine concern, time, money and problem-solving skills to everyone in his life, from taxi drivers to performers in her musicals to those planning special events for the president of the United States and heads of state. Some people only found out after the fact what Hamlisch had done on their behalf. Hamlisch never drew attention to his countless acts of kindness to friends, colleagues and strangers, but after his death in 2012, his wife Terre Blair Hamlisch received tens of thousands of letters from people who shared stories of how Hamlisch had personally helped them in their time of need.- published: 05 Dec 2013

CARLY SIMON & MARVIN HAMLISCH (H.D. COPY) "NOBODY DOES IT BETTER", 1981
HONESTLY-this is best copy by far + Marvin speaks at beginning, SO please don't miss it! (almost 40,000 viewers when it was deleted by YT in July 2013). also, information about his death on this video. I originally posted this wonderful video on June 4, 2012, with the following description: "And nobody sings it better than Carly. Love when Marvin turns and looks slyly at the camera when Carly moves in close!" UPDATE: (8-7-2012): "I posted this video on June 4, 2012, and Marvin has died on August 6. I'm so glad I got this on YouTube in time for him to possibly see it. Marvin co-wrote "Nobody Does It Better" for the 1977 James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me" with Carole Bayer Sager, his girlfriend at the time. This video is from the show "Marvin Hamlisch: They're Playing Our Song". Wikipedia says that he was one of only eleven people to have been awarded an Emmy(4), a Grammy(4), and Oscar(3), and a Tony. He was also one of only two people to have won those four prizes and also a Pulitzer Prize. He also won 2 (according to Wikipedia) Golden Globes (although Associated Press said 3 today-8/8/12)! He has left us way too soon. We will miss him very much." On 8-28-2012, I wrote this comment: "I posted this video of Carly and Marvin on 6-4-12, never expecting him to die two months later (8-6). I feel honored that it has become a tribute of sorts to him. Thank you everyone for your beautiful comments. He was a wonderful person who accomplished many extraordinary things in his life. I would like to offer my deepest heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, as I'm sure everyone who has watched this video or will yet, join me in that. He will be greatly missed. (8-28-12) HERE ARE A FEW OF THE COMMENTS I HAD SAVED BEFORE THIS VIDEO WAS DELETED (there are many more) --- From: 'TheMrbumpas' "Working as a stagehand years ago, I was lucky enough to work with Marvin once at the "Front Row" theater in Highland Hts, Ohio. He was a down to earth guy, friendly and very funny. After the show, he and I along with Alan King took a walk around the parking lot and smoked cigars that Mr.King gave us. We talked about showbusiness and life, may the both RIP, THANKS GUYS, that was a really good evening." From: 'toshiba20101000' - "Thank you so much for posting this! What a great video to commemorate the passing of the great Marvin Hamlisch. Not to mention, the all time great (still living) Carly Simon. Classic. From: 'TheStuffedolive' - "Other generations had Irving Berlin Or George Gershwin... we were so fortunate to have Marvin Hamlisch. His music - like theirs - will stand the test of time. He was a dear friend and a truly extraordinary artist and person. He shared generously his gift for making music and inspiring laughter. Nobody Did It Better - or will. Rest in peace Marvin - thanks for the Memories. From: 'cryptkeeperfun1988' - "I'm sitting here with big nervous knots in my stomach cause I have to go get a few cavities drilled tomorrow morning, and this just totally made me forget everything! What a treasure it was to run across this, thank you so very much for sharing this. With Carly's music, I feel like I can face anything!- published: 29 Mar 2014
