METRO PICTURES Bad Conscience Organized by John Miller
Cara Benedetto, Caleb Considine, Jane Dickson, Dan Graham, Nic Guagnini, Lyle Ashton Harris, Takuji Kogo & Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Leigh Ledare, Frank Lutz, Marilyn Minter, Wangechi Mutu, Greg Parma Smith, Walter Robinson, Aura Rosenberg, Matthew Watson Metro Pictures presents "Bad Conscience," an exhibition organized by artist and writer John Miller that features a multigenerational group of artists with whom Miller has collaborated in the past or maintains regular dialogue. The paintings, photographs and moving images included in the exhibition elicit a disquieting effect that Miller attributes to a troubled process of representation. Works in "Bad Conscience" range from highly nuanced images of the banal, like in Marilyn Minter's paintings of paper curls and spilled coffee on a linoleum floor, to more explicit works about vice and depravity, such as Jane Dickson's painting of a strip club in 1981 Times Square. Where Dickson's work relates to sexuality from a sociological perspective, Leigh Ledare's photographs derive from personal psychology. In Clementine Ledare asked children to draw over a lascivious image of his naked mother lying on a bed and in another he invited women from an online ad, which is exhibited along with the image, to photograph him, turning himself into a sexualized object. Aura Rosenberg's Little Hans refers to a case study of Sigmund Freud's and connects to Dickson's and Ledare's works as it ascribes guilt to sexuality. "Little Hans" was a five-year-old boy phobic of horses and obsessed with masturbation. In this work Rosenberg uses a drawing of a giraffe the boy's father made. Freud explains in his essay that once the father finished the drawing the boy insisted he add the animal's penis, which is suggested by a crude line beneath its midsection. The realist paintings of Caleb Considine, Greg Parma Smith and Matt Watson, former students of Miller, all share a sense of degradation and evident self- consciousness in technique. Considine exhibits No-Shank, a painting of a hand holding a flexible pen, an object given to prisoners so they cannot stab guards and other inmates. Parma Smith's meticulous paintings of a Swiss Army Knife and colored pencils manipulate the generic and iconic significance of the image for a decidedly outré effect while Matthew Watson's hyperrealist portraits of his former professors Nic Guagnini and Kara Walker, which were made under the condition they trade one of their own works, raises questions about obligation and responsibility between the commissioner and commissioned. Cara Benedetto's animated PowerPoint presentation Teaser introduces a man and a woman and tracks their courtship from a classified ad to a romantic weekend. Using generic snapshots and a theatrical soundtrack, Teaser is a kind of movie trailer that obliquely chronicles the couple's brief relationship. The melodramatic music, enigmatic narrative and unusual diction of the captions make Benedetto's animation strikingly unnerving. Takuji Kogo & Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries exhibit two Flash animations comprising only of captions in English and Japanese and melancholic MIDI soundtracks. Statement 0029: To My Good and Loyal Subjects is the Japanese Emperor Hirohito's address of surrender following the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and in Statement 0063: After Recent Surgery On My Scalp we hear Michael Jackson's statement following accusations that he was a repeat child molester. John Miller's forthcoming book "Educational Complex" examines Mike Kelley's eponymous work and will be published as part of Afterall's One Work series in 2015. Two anthologies of Miller's essays have been published by JRP|Ringier: The Ruin of Exchange and The Price Club. Music by: Chill Carrier - A New Day- published: 18 Jan 2014

METRO PICTURES - Trevor Paglen
Trevor Paglen first one-person show February 7th - March 9th Opening Reception February 7, 6 - 8 PM In his first exhibition at Metro Pictures, Trevor Paglen presents works related to his project The Last Pictures, a selection of photographs reflecting unease and uncertainty about the present, and a deep anxiety about the future. Commissioned by Creative Time, Paglen worked with scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to produce a disc micro-etched with 100 photographs, designed to last in space for billions of years. The project culminated in November of 2012 when the disc was attached to a communications satellite and launched from Kazakhstan into Earth's orbit. The exhibition includes a selection of key images from The Last Pictures. Among the large color prints and black-and-white diptychs is Angelus Novus (2012), a photograph of the backside of Paul Klee's 1920 painting of the same name. Once owned by Walter Benjamin, the painting is an important reference in the philosopher's last work "Theses on the Philosophy of History" (1940). In the essay Benjamin argues for a circular conception of history, one recognizing that despite the notion of progress, societies produce and reproduce similar economic, humanitarian, and political crises. For Benjamin, the "angel of history" faces the past and is propelled backwards into the future by the ongoing explosions of the present. By presenting the back of the painting, Paglen asks his audience to look back at the ongoing crisis of the present. Additionally, there is a grid of 182 images collected for the project but ultimately excluded and a video of the satellite in orbit. Also exhibited are photographs, "skyscapes," of nearly undetectable surveillance drones in a seemingly empty field, a massive National Security Agency data center under construction in suburban Utah, and secret satellites in the night's sky. Paglen's images are both documents of clandestine military operations and a contribution to the history of photographic abstraction, following in the tradition of Alfred Stieglitz's landmark "Equivalents" series of imposing clouds in an inordinately black sky. In September 2012 Paglen and filmmaker Werner Herzog discussed The Last Pictures in an event at New York's Bryant Park. Following a series of lectures at institutions in the United States and Europe in fall 2012, The Last Pictures was published by the University of California Press and Creative Time Books and is available at the gallery. Paglen will give tours of the exhibition every Saturday at 3 PM except for February 23rd. Trevor Paglen holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Geography from U.C. Berkeley. Paglen has had one-person exhibitions at: the Vienna Secession, Berkeley Art Museum; Kunsthall Oslo; Kunsthalle Giessen, Germany. His work has been included in group shows at: MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA; SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico; Haus der Kunst, Munich; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Tate Modern, London and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has participated in the 2009 Istanbul Biennial and 2012 Liverpool Biennial. Isaac Julien PLAYTIME Metro Pictures 519 W. 24th St. New York, NY 10011 November 7th - December 17th Opening: November 7th 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM Metro Pictures presents Isaac Julien's "PLAYTIME," an exhibition that explores current debates on the relationships between capital, the art world and the individual. The exhibition comprises the large film installation, PLAYTIME, a two-monitor flat-screen installation, KAPITAL; a single- monitor film, PLAYTIME (Auctioneer); and six photographic works. Consisting of three chapters, PLAYTIME is set across three cities defined by their relationship to capital: London, a city transformed by the deregulation of banks; Reykjavik, where the 2008 crisis began; and Dubai, one of the Middle East's burgeoning financial markets. Following the five main characters identified only as The Collector, The Houseworker, The Artist, The Auctioneer and The Reporter, PLAYTIME asks how these diverse characters are entangled in capital and how they are implicated in the global financial crisis. All the characters in PLAYTIME are based on real individuals whom Julien interviewed and researched extensively. The work blurs the line between documentary and fiction by mixing dialogue performed by actors with excerpts from the interviewees themselves. KAPITAL presents Julien and David Harvey, author of the book "The Enigma of Capital," in conversation with theorists, critics and curators at the Hayward Gallery in London. The film opens by asking how we can visualize modern capital. As the conversation progresses it becomes clear that the problem of visualizing such an abstract notion is itself linked to other questions such as: what commonalities and differences are there between the capital of today and that described by Marx? How does capital relate to the art market and what effect does it have on art's attempts to depict capital and its effects? Julien's technique of parallel montage is developed in KAPITAL as he uses two screens to equalize the process of theoretical enquiry, bringing artist, theorist, audience, academic and student onto a horizontal but constantly shifting plane. Julien's acclaimed film Ten Thousand Waves is on view at the Museum of Modern Art November 25 -- February 17, 2014. Projected onto nine double- sided screens, the installation is conceived especially for the Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium at the museum. Isaac Julien has had one-person exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Institute of Contemporary Arts, Boston; Art Institute of Chicago; Milwaukee Art Museum; Bass Museum of Art, Miami; St. Louis Art Museum; Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover; SESC Pompeia, Sao Paulo; and Aspen Art Museum. Julien participated in the 2004 Whitney Biennial, 8th Shanghai Biennale; and 2012's La Triennale at Palais de Tokyo, Paris. His films have been included in film festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival, Berlin Biennale and Venice Film Festival.- published: 09 Nov 2013
