Fred Wessel American Painter for adult Eine Kleine Nachtmusik MOZART
A two week trip that I took to Italy in 1984, had a profound and prolonged influence on my work. At that time I was involved in making a series of aquarium images. I went to Italy to view the art of the Renaissance, for it is my belief that all visual artists, especially realists, should experience and study this work firsthand. I could not have predicted the dramatic impact, both direct and indirect, that this journey of discovery would have on my ensuing work. I believe that in our search for novelty in post-modernist art making, we often lose touch with certain basics: beauty, grace, harmony and visual poetry are nowadays rarely considered important criteria in evaluating contemporary works of art. Since the Bauhaus, the term 'precious' has had a negative connotation in art schools. It was a term used derisively in the 1960's to describe work that did not adhere to the fashionably pared down kernels of conceptualism or minimalism. But after seeing the beauty, sensitivity, harmony—the 'preciousness'—of Italian Renaissance painting—especially the early Renaissance work of artists such as Fra Angelico, Duccio and Simone Martini—I realize that, as artists, we may have abandoned too much. The ever--changing inner light that radiates from gold leaf used judiciously on the surface of a painting, and the use of pockets of rich, intense colors that illuminate the picture's surface impressed me deeply. It was 'preciousness' elevated to grand heights: semi--precious gems such as lapis lazuli, malachite, azurite, etc., were ground up, mixed with egg yolk and applied as paint pigments, producing dazzling, breathtaking colors! The surface of these colors forms a texture that sparkles and reflects light much like gold does, but in ways that are much more subtle than gold. I look to the early Renaissance as a source of inspiration that I can use along with contemporary content and image making. I look to the Renaissance as the artists of that time looked back to early Greek and Roman art—not as a reactionary but as one who rediscovers and reapplies important but forgotten visual stimuli.- published: 18 May 2014

Sleepless night
This project started as a proposal for a visual identity competition for a cultural event that turns the city into an all-night open air art space where people can gather around different music, film, dance or arts performances and installations.
We choose to explore the idea of full moon (re)lighting the cities all around the world.
The direction was to create an impactful visual concept that could be transposed to each city's heritage on various medias suchs as print, web, or mobile apps.
The idea was to create a dialogue between full-moon iconography and local classical figures or piece of iconic architectures. We wanted to reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of contemporary art in the visual idea. While realistic sculptures are morphed into low-poly geometric shapes, a primitive shape is turned into an organic element. The mixed technique is puzzling, is this full CGI or a tangible installation ? is this a motion graphics piece or video captation ? it's actually all of the above, but the technique doesn't matter, only matter the impression of mystery and poetry left behind.

Videorative Portrait of Randall Okita
What is a truly realistic portrait? This question inspired a project about going beyond physical appearances and attempting to render the interior world of a human being, through memories, emotions, relationships and personal story. All of it organized around a portrait painting metaphor: brushes loaded with meanings instead of paint would render a portrait using my "generative video painting" techniques (http://vimeo.com/24065726).
Painting a Videorative portrait (a generative, narrative and interactive video portrait) starts with collecting personal videos of the person portrayed, tagged by him/her with relevant concepts and descriptions. Then, using a custom developed tool, the artist "paints with meanings" and generates a video portrait, subtitled with generative personal narratives. In the interactive installation version of the work, the viewer can "navigate" through the subject's mind, opening his/her video memories, accessing their thoughts and revealing hidden connections between the meanings, using real time access to Wikipedia to infer related emotional states. These "data visualizations" create new and unexpected interpretations of the portrait.
The subject portrayed can add more video memories, tags and descriptions to “increase the likeness” of the portrait over time, all his/her life, creating a never-ending collection of personal documentaries.
Videorative portraits are the result of my experiments to build a more “realistic” contemporary portrait of the physical and the psychological. A comment on the art of portrait painting. A visual metaphor of the memory, heavily distorted, chaotic, fragmented, obsessively replayed. A window to the subject's personal experience and intimate world. A picture of memories. A map of emotions.
My immense gratitude to filmmaker Randall Okita for accepting the challenge of exposing himself in these portraits.
