Citizen Strangers Minority Rights in the State of Israel
Citizen Strangers Minority Rights in the State of Israel
Citizen Strangers Minority Rights in the State of Israel Since its establishment in 1948, the state of Israel has had a significant Arab minority population. For the founders of the state, this presented a conundrum. On the one hand, they intended Israel to be the homeland of the Jewish people, but on the other, they wanted it to be a liberal state, which by definition meant that residents had to be enfranchised. To that end, the Palestinian Arabs who remained in Israel were immediately granted citizenship and the right to vote, but their civil rights, employment, and movement were restricted under military law until 1966. The long-term effects of Israel's policies and attitudes toward its Palestinian minority citizens are still felt today. In her new book, Citizen Strangers: Palestinians and the Birth of Israel's Liberal State, Shira Robinson traces how the leaders of the nascent state struggled with the contradiction between advancing the project of building a state for the Jews, while finding a way to ostensibly share political power with its Palestinian citizens, even as the government expropriated Palestinian lands and limited their participation in Jewish society. The New America Foundation is pleased to welcome Robinson, and Yousef Munayyer, the Executive Director of the Jerusalem Fund and the Palestine Center in Washington, DC, for a discussion about her book and the legacy of these conflicting policies. Participants Dr. Shira Robinson Author, Citizen Strangers: Palestinians and the Birth of Israel's Liberal State Associate Professor of History and International Affairs, the Elliot School of International Affairs, George Washington University Yousef Munayyer Executive Director, Jerusalem Fund and the Palestine Center Moderator Lisa Goldman Director, Israel-Palestine Initiative, International Security Program, New America Foundation http://newamerica.net/events/2014/citizen_strangers- published: 09 May 2014

Minority Rights: Are they just a waste of time?
Fighting for minority rights is a waste of time. This video explains why and suggest what we should be fighting for instead. I curse twice in this video. Warning for parents with tots, ten year olds or if you literally become cursed when you hear curse words. If any of those apply then BEWARE! Also this video has BLACK lines on the side. -_- It's what I get for saying minority rights are stupid. Ha.......- published: 31 Aug 2013

How the U.S. Became More Unequal: Minority Rights, Equality & Ronald Reagan - Kurt Vonnegut (1987)
How the U.S. Became More Unequal: Minority Rights, Equality & Ronald Reagan - Kurt Vonnegut (1987)
Reagan opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Reagan gave a States' Rights speech at the Neshoba County Fair in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the town where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964, when running for president in 1980 (many politicians had spoken at that annual Fair, however). Reagan was offended that some accused him of racism. In 1980 Reagan said the Voting Rights Act was "humiliating to the South", although he later supported extending the Act. He opposed Fair Housing legislation in California (the Rumford Fair Housing Act), but in 1988 signed a law expanding the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Reagan was unsuccessful in trying to veto another civil rights bill in March of the same year. At first Reagan opposed the Martin Luther King holiday, and signed it only after an overwhelming veto-proof majority (338 to 90 in the House of Representatives and 78 to 22 in the Senate) voted in favor of it. Congress overrode Reagan's veto of the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1988. Reagan said the Restoration Act would impose too many regulations on churches, the private sector and state and local governments. No civil rights legislation for LGBT individuals passed during Reagan's tenure. On the 1980 campaign trail, he spoke of the gay civil rights movement: My criticism is that [the gay movement] isn't just asking for civil rights; it's asking for recognition and acceptance of an alternative lifestyle which I do not believe society can condone, nor can I. The Domestic policy of the Ronald Reagan administration was the domestic policy in the United States from 1981 to 1989 under President Ronald Reagan. It retained conservative values economically, beginning with the president's implementation of his supply-side economic policies, dubbed Reaganomics by both supporters and detractors. His policies included the largest tax cut in American history, as well as increased defense spending however he raised taxes significantly four times due to economic conditions and reforms.[1] Notable events included his firing of nearly 12,000 striking air traffic control workers and appointing the first woman to the Supreme Court bench, Sandra Day O'Connor. He believed in federalism, and passed policies to encourage development of private business, routinely criticizing and defunding the public sector. He greatly accelerated the nation's War on Drugs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_policy_of_the_Reagan_administration- published: 06 Sep 2013
