NATO and partner nations conduct Exercise Steadfast Jazz 2013 in Latvia and in Poland from 2 - 9 November 2013. The event mark the culmination of a series of dynamic and demanding exercises designed to train and test troops and commanders from the NATO Response Force (NRF). The Steadfast series of exercises are part of NATO's efforts to maintain connected and interoperable forces at a high-level of readiness. The goal is to make sure that NRF troops are ready to deal with any situation in any environment. The event involves about 6,000 personnel from many Allied and partner nations. Around 3,000 headquarters personnel from Joint Force Command Brunssum and other headquarters is involved in a command & control exercise on the Adazi Base near Riga, Latvia and at several other headquarters locations across the Alliance. In addition, multinational troops participate in a live-fire exercise at Poland's Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area. Air, land, maritime, and special forces also participate from several locations. .

The reception was attended by the diplomatic corps and military attaches accredited in Georgia, as well as by the representatives of Georgian executive and legislative bodies. The ministry organized the photo exhibition dedicated to the Latvian national folklore. At the same time, the presentation of a postage stamp dedicated to the 20th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Republic of Latvia took place at the Embassy of Latvia. A country in transition, hellbent on shedding its stalwart old-Soviet image, the Latvia of today is vibrant, enigmatic and altogether mesmerising. Refreshingly unpretentious, Latvia manages to tantalise even the most jaded traveller. Many arrive expecting little and leave overwhelmed, certain they've uncovered long-buried treasure. Latvian amber was known in places as far away as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In the 12th century, German traders arrived, bringing with them missionaries who attempted to convert the pagan Finno-Ugric and Baltic tribes to the Christian faith. The Germans founded Rīga in 1201, establishing it as the largest and most powerful city on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. After independence in 1918, Latvia achieved considerable results in social development, economy, industry and agriculture. It has always been a multicultural melting point, where foreigners and locals worked together and brought prosperity to the country. On June 16, 1940, Vyacheslav Molotov presented the Latvian representative in Moscow with an ultimatum accusing Latvia of violations of that pact, and on June 17 Soviet forces occupied the country. Elections for a "People's Saeima" were held, and a puppet government headed by Augusts Kirhenšteins led Latvia into the USSR. The annexation was formalized on August 5, 1940. During the time of the Iron Curtain, Latvia was a province of the Soviet Union, but the concentration of heavy industry was enormous. Contacts with the West were regulated. The Baltic region had the reputation of being the most urbanized and having the highest literacy rate in the Soviet Union. Latvia gained independence on September 6, 1991. Between 1991 and 2007 the country saw unprecedented economic growth. However, the global recession and the banking crisis hit Latvia brutally, and severe economic contraction and destructively high unemployment have returned. Because of a tribal past and divisions between occupying nations, there are regional differences between parts of Latvia which are interesting to explore. This film features detailed footage in and around the city centre of Riga, the capital city of Latvia, which is a Baltic Sea state located in Eastern Europe. Jelgava is a city in central Latvia about 41 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Riga with about 64,000 inhabitants. It is the largest town in the region of Zemgale (Semigalia). I visited there for a day on the train from Riga, the journey time was 50 minutes. Jelgava isn't a particularly 'touristy' destination, there are some wonderful architectural sites, particularly the churches and palace, some parts of the town are quite run down, but I found it to be a charming representation of real Latvia, that you don't find with Riga. I spent 5 hours in Riga on a slow circular walk with a meal and lots of photographs en-route. I filmed as I walked around, and this video is the edited fruits of my labour, the following locations and features are all identified in the film: Stacijas Parks, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran's Church, Pasta iela, St. George's Church, Orthodox Church, Academia Petrina, Holy Trinity Church Tower, Inside the top of Holy Trinity Church Tower, Views over Jelgava from Holy Trinity Church Tower, the French Restaurant in Holy Trinity Church Tower - the food is EXCELLENT, Driska River, Pils Parks, Mitava Palace (Latvia University of Agriculture), Lielupe River, Lielupe Bridge, Mitavas Bridge, Skating on Pasta Island and Jelgava Railway Station. I really enjoyed my day in Jelgava and would recommend it to other visitors to Riga and Latvia.
