George Washington (February 22, 1732 [O.S. February 11, 1731][Note 1][Note 2] -- December 14, 1799) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, serving as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He also presided over the convention that drafted the Constitution, which replaced the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution established the position of President of the republic, which Washington was the first to hold. Washington was elected President as the unanimous choice of the 69 electors in 1788, and he served two terms in office. He oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that maintained neutrality in the wars raging in Europe, suppressed rebellion, and won acceptance among Americans of all types. His leadership style established many forms and rituals of government that have been used since, such as using a cabinet system and delivering an inaugural address. Further, the peaceful transition from his presidency to the presidency of John Adams established a tradition that continues into the 21st century. Historically, Washington has been widely regarded as the "father of his country".[4] Washington was born into the provincial gentry of Colonial Virginia; his wealthy planter family owned tobacco plantations and slaves. After both his father and older brother died when he was young, Washington became personally and professionally attached to the powerful William Fairfax, who promoted his career as a surveyor and soldier. Washington quickly became a senior officer in the colonial forces during the first stages of the French and Indian War. Chosen by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 to be commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolution, Washington managed to force the British out of Boston in 1776, but was defeated and almost captured later that year when he lost New York City. After crossing the Delaware River in the dead of winter, he defeated the British in two battles, retook New Jersey and restored momentum to the Patriot cause. Because of his strategy, Revolutionary forces captured two major British armies at Saratoga in 1777 and Yorktown in 1781. Historians laud Washington for his selection and supervision of his generals, encouragement of morale and ability to hold together the army, coordination with the state governors and state militia units, relations with Congress and attention to supplies, logistics, and training. In battle, however, Washington was repeatedly outmaneuvered by British generals with larger armies. After victory had been finalized in 1783, Washington resigned as Commander-in-chief rather than seize power, proving his opposition to dictatorship and his commitment to American republicanism. Dissatisfied with the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, in 1787 Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention that drafted the United States Constitution. Elected unanimously as the first President of the United States in 1789, he attempted to bring rival factions together to unify the nation. He supported Alexander Hamilton's programs to pay off all state and national debt, to implement an effective tax system and to create a national bank (despite opposition from Thomas Jefferson). Washington proclaimed the United States neutral in the wars raging in Europe after 1793. He avoided war with Great Britain and guaranteed a decade of peace and profitable trade by securing the Jay Treaty in 1795, despite intense opposition from the Jeffersonians. Although never officially joining the Federalist Party, he supported its programs. Washington's "Farewell Address" was an influential primer on republican virtue and a warning against partisanship, sectionalism, and involvement in foreign wars. He retired from the presidency in 1797 and returned to his home, Mount Vernon, and his domestic life where he managed a variety of enterprises. He freed all his slaves by his final will. Washington had a vision of a great and powerful nation that would be built on republican lines using federal power. He sought to use the national government to preserve liberty, improve infrastructure, open the western lands, promote commerce, found a permanent capital, reduce regional tensions and promote a spirit of American nationalism.[5] At his death, Washington was hailed as "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen".[6] The Federalists made him the symbol of their party but for many years, the Jeffersonians continued to distrust his influence and delayed building the Washington Monument. As the leader of the first successful revolution against a colonial empire in world history, Washington became an international icon for liberation and nationalism, especially in France and Latin America.[7] He is consistently ranked among the top three presidents of the United States, according to polls of both scholars and the general public.- published: 12 Nov 2013

25 Interesting Things You Didn't Know About George Washington
Did you know that before fighting against the British he actually fought for the British? These are 25 interesting things you didn't know about George Washington. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-interesting-things-you-didnt-know-about-george-washington/ Here's a preview: He started school at 6 years old and left at 15 to become a surveyor because his family was too poor to afford education At 26 he married Martha Custis who already had two children. Washington never had any kids of his own At 6 ft 2 in and 200 pounds he was one of the biggest presidents He had numerous toothaches so when he was 57 he had all his teeth pulled and from then on he wore false teeth Research performed on a set of Washington's dentures in 2005 showed they were made of gold, ivory, lead, and human and animal teeth Before fighting against the British he actually fought for the British against the French in Ohio and lost He actually lost most of his battles and according to some sources he was the losingest victorious general in modern history Many myths about George, including the one about the cherry tree can be traced back to a biography written by Parson Weems shortly after Washington died. Weems was known for telling tall tales Washington is the richest president ever and in today's dollars his assets would be worth roughly $500 million At 67 years old Washington came down with a cold and was dead within 48 hours. It has been theorized that he died due to medical malpractice as he was subject to four rounds of bloodletting Washington came out of retirement to lead the nation's military in 1798 against the French Washington made a style of whiskey we would consider "moonshine" today, which is why there are so many rumors about him being a moonshiner He paid taxes, however, and had a license, so he was actually considered a distiller At one point in time his distillery produced 11,000 gallons of whiskey in one year He also grew hemp as a cash crop But it's not what you think, many farmers in that day grew and sold hemp because it was used to make rope, paper, and other products Washington was actually quite an agricultural innovator and supposedly introduced the idea of crop rotation He also allegedly introduced mules to America when he bred donkeys from the King of Spain with his own horses In a 2012 poll in Great Britain, General Washington was voted as the greatest military enemy to face the Empire--beating out even Napoleon He is the only president in American history to be unanimously elected to office He didn't have a middle name He didn't wear a wig. That's real hair in all of his pictures He was made an honorary citizen of France in 1792 He is the only president to have actually gone into battle while serving as president In 1976 he was posthumously rewarded the highest rank in the American military ever...General of the Armies of the United States- published: 12 May 2014

The Life of George Washington Carver
The Life of George Washington Carver
Dr. Willis D. Weatherford, President of Blue Ridge, introduced Dr. Carver as the speaker. With his high voice surprising the audience, Dr. Carver exclaimed humorously: "I always look forward to introductions as opportunities to learn something about myself...." He continued: "Years ago I went into my laboratory and said, 'Dear Mr. Creator, please tell me what the universe was made for?' The Great Creator answered, 'You want to know too much for that little mind of yours. Ask for something more your size, little man.' Then I asked, 'Please, Mr. Creator, tell me what man was made for.' Again the Great Creator replied, 'You are still asking too much. Cut down on the extent and improve the intent.' So then I asked, 'Please, Mr. Creator, will you tell me why the peanut was made?' 'That's better, but even then it's infinite. What do you want to know about the peanut?' 'Mr. Creator, can I make milk out of the peanut?' 'What kind of milk do you want? Good Jersey milk or just plain boarding house milk?' 'Good Jersey milk.' And then the Great Creator taught me to take the peanut apart and put it together again. And out of the process have come forth all these products!" Among the numerous products displayed was a bottle of good Jersey milk. Three and-a-half ounces of peanuts produced one pint of rich milk or one quart of raw "skim" milk, called boarding house "blue john" milk. Special Thank you to The American Minute.
