Bagamoyo, Lay Your Heart Down
Long before the first African stepped foot on North American soil and long after the last slave ships plied the Atlantic Ocean, East Africa harbored its own dark trade. For centuries until the 1920s, Arab traders traveled into Africa’s heart to collect slaves for use both on African plantations and throughout the Middle East. Along the way, these slaves endured atrocities as cruel as many that happened in West Africa. Death marches to the coast for thousands of miles. Pain, hunger, exhaustion. Families split apart. The clash of culture, language and religion.
Before being shipped around the world, many slaves were funneled through one small town in modern-day Tanzania: the quiet yet diverse Bagamoyo. How did a community born of brutality become a place of tolerance and forgiveness?
In this eye-opening and compelling film, Jake Salyers sheds light on a forgotten piece of history. Through the prism of Bagamoyo, Salyers examines the East African slave trade and its reverberations into the present day. From the ancient ruins of Arab colonies to the testimonies of villagers who can still remember the slave trade, BAGAMOYO, LAY YOUR HEART DOWN reveals a classic story of past loss and present redemption.

The Swahili Beat - The History of the East African Coast as Told through the Music of its Indigenous People
TRAILER
I grew up in Kenya and used to visit the coast on school vacations with my family. My parents always took us to the ruins of ancient cities along the coast, like Gedi, and to Fort Jesus, in Mombasa. A t the time, I found them boring, too hot and fly-infest and wanted only to jump into the delicious Indian Ocean. But now I've become fascinated with the history and on a visit to Kenya, in 2007, right after my mother died, I took myself off to the coast to mourn her, and found myself making this film instead.
THE SWAHILI BEAT is an upbeat look at the remarkable history of the Swahili people of Kenya and Tanzania’s East African coast. Packed with the music and dance of the Swahili and other indigenous coastal peoples, the film takes viewers from the fabled island of Lamu off the northern coast of Kenya to Zanzibar, Mombasa, Kilwa, Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The film traces the development of the Swahili culture through the intermarriage of Arab settlers, arriving from Oman in the 8th century, with local Africans. The resulting Afro-Arab Islamic hybrid culture cemented economic and social stability and fueled the emergence of the Swahili as prosperous merchant brokers in the Indian Ocean basin and in the growing East African slave trade. This made them a lucrative target for successive waves of settlers, invaders and colonizers, including the Persians, Portuguese, Arabs, Germans and British. THE SWAHILI BEAT examines the impact of these invaders, and asks whether the Swahili, who have successfully absorbed a variety of cultural influences, can maintain their traditional culture in the face of globalization and the Internet.

From Slaveships to Relationships: Narratives of Healing (Full Trailer)
The film From Slaveships to Relationships: Narratives of Healing aims to highlight the physical, mental, philosophical, cultural, and spiritual breakdown of the enslaved Africans during the Arab and European slave trade. It focuses on the effects that slavery had on Black intimacy, from the breakdown of the family on the continent to wherever the enslaved Africans were taken. The overall goal of this documentary is to initiate dialogues around Black intimacy and outline a solution to strengthen the relationships that have been traumatised through slavery. First, the film will look to identify the root causes of issues that are specifically encountered by Africans; then, the film will attempt to provide an international Africans communal voice that explores a collective healing process.

Avery Research Center
From its inception, the Center has served as a source of community outreach on African-American issues.
Between 1700 and 1800, at the height of the Atlantic Slave trade, 40% of Africans who were forcibly shipped to mainland North America, came to the shores of Charleston, South Carolina.
The unparalleled impact of the skill, talent and leadership of enslaved and free blacks, have produced an unprecedented history in Gullah and Sea Island culture, slavery, civil war and reconstruction, civil and women’s rights, education, business, and the arts. It is Avery’s mission to preserve this legacy.
