Students in Taiwan storm the legislature to demand change
More than 300 brave Taiwanese students stormed Taiwan's parliament in Taipei on Tuesday night to protest the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement (海峽兩岸服務貿易協議) that President Ma is trying to ram through without the consent of the Taiwanese people. The college students burst into the legislative chamber around 9pm and shortly after midnight repulsed a police effort to evict them from the premises. More police goons have been called to the legislature. So far there have been no reported injuries or arrests in the confrontation. These protest are a clear example that Taiwan is in no way a part of China. Can Chinese people storm their rubber stamp legislature and protest freely? Hell no. The trade agreement would allow Taiwanese and Chinese service sector companies to set up branches or shops in the other country. If the butt-kissing KMT allow the trade agreement to go through, which they most surely will, then China will be able to invest in 64 industries in Taiwan, including advertising, cinema, retail, printing and telecommunication. So basically, the KMT is helping China by allowing Taiwan to be economically integrated into the world's most corrupt country. Many in the KMT are keen to ram the pact through because they will directly benefit. Meaning, the corrupt KMT will get even richer off of ill gotten gains. Luckily, Taiwanese people have no interest in becoming part of the world's worst country. The KMT will continue to ignore the voice of the Taiwanese people because they're dumb like that. The KMT still don't understand how a democracy functions and that will ultimately be their downfall. Let's hope that comes sooner rather than later. As long as President Ma keeps taking it in the rear end from China and KMT legislators continue to completely misunderstand how democracy works, maybe they should just let the students run things. Any objections? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Taiwan Students Occupy Legislature over China Trade Deal
Hundreds of protesters occupy Taiwan legislature over the nation's trade pact with China. Full Story: About 200 Taiwan students opposed to a trade pact with China, which they fear gives the mainland too much economic influence, have occupied Taiwan's legislature. The protesters burst into the legislative chamber late on Tuesday and repulsed police efforts to evict them, media said. The students said they were demanding an apology to the Taiwan people from President Ma Ying-jeou for the trade pact and that an initial review of the pact by the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party be scrapped. The KMT said this week its initial review of the pact had been completed despite opposition party concern about the mainland's growing influence on the Taiwanese economy. Protesters chanted slogans inside the legislature building and said they would not leave for at least 43 hours. "We demand Legislative Yuan Chairman Wang Chin-Ping to declare directly that the decision made by interior committee yesterday is invalid. And we ask President Ma Ying-Jeou, Mr. Ma to come here to respond the people's demands in person," 24-year-old student groups spokesperson, Huang Yu-fen said inside the building early on Wednesday (March 19). Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party, which has vowed to protect the island's economy from excessive Chinese influence, has said it would vote against the deal although it lacks numbers to block its passage. "Democratic Progressive Party is very concerned and supportive. We hope this issues could be resolved right away. Ma Ying-jeou has to take the responsibility as Kuomintang made a force approval at Legislative Yuan that should have not been done," Chairman of Democratic Progress Party Su Chen-chang said. The protesters blocked the entrances of the building with chairs to keep police out while hundreds of protesters sat outside to express their dissatisfaction. Mainland China is the island's biggest trading partner and the two sides have signed a slew of agreements on everything from transport to tourism since Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou took office in 2008. Under the latest trade pact, China will open 80 of its service sectors to Taiwanese companies, while Taiwan will allow mainland investment in 64 sectors. China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since Nationalist forces, defeated by the Communists, fled to the island at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. China considers Taiwan a renegade province and has never ruled out the use of force to bring it under its control. However, in recent years, the two sides have built up extensive economic ties, and in February they held their first direct government-to-government talks, a big step towards expanding cross-strait dialogue beyond trade. Partial transcript...of text that appears in the vid (there may be unlisted gaps between sentences): 'When the Ridley was away, the mice did play. Here's what happened during my first visit to New Hampshire's state house in about six months. I was standing outside the Judiciary committee room, mostly to question reps about the man who burned himself alive in protest of their court system. A lobbyist walks past. Since she's a lobbyist, since she looks interesting to my viewers and since she's previously taken issue with filming in public, I film her. These encounters were April 1, 2014. I sparked many other unusual and bizarre reactions this day. Stay tuned for video of the others. I don't yet have the lobbyists name or employer, but should acquire these sooner or later.' The protesters, mostly university students, entered the main assembly hall inside the Legislative Yuan in Taipei on Tuesday night and blocked the entrances with chairs, according to images and accounts filed from the scene with CNN iReport. Police responded but had not dispersed the protesters, who also filled the streets around the Legislature in the center of Taipei. The students said they plan to occupy the Legislature until Friday's session, when the pact was to be deliberated. Taiwan's state news agency reported that 38 police officers were injured when more than 400 protesters took over the Legislature. Four protesters were arrested in two unsuccessful attempts to evict them, the news agency reported. Police said there were more than 2,000 protesters both inside and outside the building, with a equal number of officers on the scene. "We do not want to clash with the police," said protester and iReporter Shanny Chang, 19. "We just have to let the government know that never try to fool the people." One CNN iReporter said that after the protesters took over, hundreds gathered outside the building, with some making speeches and singing songs. In a video, a young woman sings Bob Dylan's song "The Times They are a-Changin'," which many associate with the protest spirit of the 1960s. "She played the Dylan song because she thinks the lyrics match the ongoing events happening in Taiwan," said iReporter George Chang, 24, who shot the video. "Bob Dylan isn't really that popular in Taiwan, especially not to the 8th grade generation, what Taiwanese call children born after 1991, but to the older generations I think he isn't a stranger to them." The trade pact was signed last year in Shanghai to ease investment and trade between the two longtime adversaries, mainland China and Taiwan. Thanks for me friends from overseas all very concern about our situation now. The purpose of this video is to briefly explain what is happening here in my country. I also provide my viewpoints in this video. Those students and people are really amazing and admirable, they are consuming themselves to create the history of democracy. Thank you watching my video, welcome to share your thoughts below. our FB fanpage: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kate-Yu-Yus-Fabulous-Lounge-in-London/179383578862547 My manager, Kate's Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/yunbabe888 ((most of my videos are there!!))- published: 22 Mar 2014
