Boko Haram Leader Shekau Releases Video On Abduction Of Chibok Girls

The leader of Boko Haram sect, Imam Abubakar Shekau, released a video today in which he claimed responsibility for abducting the Nigerian school girls, and said he will soak all Nigerian soil with Christian blood, and Muslims opposing them, whom he described as infidels. The video lasts 56 minutes and 58 seconds, and shows Iman Shekau speaking from a script, surrounded by heavily armed fighters, backed by an armored personnel carrier, and two other armed vehicles. Iman Shekau said, "I am the one that took your girls. Are you the one that created the girls? I will sell them in the market. I have my own market of selling human beings. It is Allah, the owner that instructed me to sell. I will sell the girls." And he added, "It is Allah that instructed us, until we soak the ground of Nigeria with Christian blood and so called Muslims contradicting Islam. After we have killed, killed, killed, and get fatigue and wondering on what to do with smelling of their corpses, smelling of Obama, Bush and Jonathan worried us then we will open prison and be imprisoned the rest. Infidels have no value." 234 Nigerian schoolgirls, aged between 15-18, were abducted from a remote school in Chibok village, Borno State, in Northeast Nigeria on April 15. The girls and young women came from schools in Izge, Lassa, Ashigashiya and Warabe to do final exams because other the schools were shut in Borno state because of attacks by Boko Haram. Iman Shekau said the sects friends are those in Afghanistan, Mali, Yemen and Pakistan, and not those Arabs who just bragged with their colors but deal with Americans and the West. Shekau said there is slavery in Islam, contrary to his critics, noting that Prophet Muhammed took slaves during Badr war in Hejaz region of western Arabia in present day Saudi Arabia. Shekau said, "Just because I took girls in Western school they are worried. I say they (the girls) should desert the school. They should go and marry. Stupid people. Talking about human rights and democracy. Nonsense. People that are doing same sex marriage and saying they are leaders." And he added, "I will imprison Jonathan's daughter, any one that turn to Islam will be saved. For me anyone that embraces Islam is my own. Stupid Jonathan, you will be surprise. Until the land is soaked with blood." Later he said, "This is a war against Christians and democracy and their constitution, we have not started, we will be in Abuja, and in your state. This war is against Christians, I mean Christians, generally the infidels. Allah says we should finish them when we get them." Shekau boasted in the video that he has no business with infidel's money, "I have no time with your trillion. I am working for Allah and will die for it. No one can stop me. You killed Mohammed Yusuf. Are you not saying he is even better than Shekau? Even if you kill me, other fighters will rise better than me, I am nothing and worthless before Allah who I am working for. You are sitting with Christians and saying we are one, saying there is no difference. We are not one with infidels." Later he said, "It is a lie, in fact you suppose to wash and re-wash a plate Christian eats food before you eat as Muslims. You know all these things and you are contradicting Islam. Are Christians the people we should play with? They killed us in Shendam, Zangon Katab and all the places. It is either you are with us or you are with them, and when we see you, we will harvest your neck with knife." He cursed Islamic political leaders the late Malam Aminu Kano, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Islamic scholar, Usman Dan Fodio as infidels for working and accepting democracy and constitution, and added, "We are not ignorant of all that happened." The mass abduction three weeks ago, and the Nigerian military's failure to rescue the girls and young women, has roused national and international outrage with protests in major cities in Nigeria, and across the world. A number of girls have escaped who said their captors identified themselves as Boko Haram. Nigerian Police Commissioner, Tanko Lawan told reporters the number of escaped girls is 53.

Niger aims to prevent Sahara deaths with travel curb

A minister in Niger says women and children may be banned from travelling north out of the country. "I will be proposing in our next cabinet meeting to ban women and children from travelling to the north from Arlit," Foreign Minister Bazoum Mohammed told the BBC. He was speaking after the bodies of 92 migrants who had died of thirst were found in the Sahara. Niger lies on a major migrant route between sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. But among those who make it across the desert, many end up working in North African countries. "What we hear from our ambassador in Algeria and our consular office in Tamanrasset is that these people come from... districts in Niger and they go to Algeria for begging on the streets," Mr Mohammed said. "Most of these people are being driven by poverty into this difficult situation, but as far as we're concerned this is not a solution," he added. Those found earlier this week are thought to be migrant workers and their families. Most of them were women and children. Mr Mohammed said a ban would "stop this kind of tragedy". But it is not clear how it would be enforced over the country's porous northern borders. The bodies of the migrants were found by rescue workers after the migrants' vehicles broke down as they tried to cross the Sahara. Rescue worker Almoustapha Alhacen told the BBC the corpses were in a severe state of decomposition and had been partly eaten, probably by jackals. "There was a well about 25km (16 miles) away from where the truck broke down," Mr Alhacen said. "They were trying to reach the well, but unfortunately they couldn't make it. So as we followed the route, we kept finding the bodies in groups," he added. 'It was horrible' According to Mr Alhacen, one of the vehicles that the migrants were travelling in broke down some time after they left Arlit at the end of September or beginning of October. Security officials said the second vehicle broke down as it was on its way back to Arlit to get spare parts. It appears that some of the group set out on foot, including up to 10 people who made it back to Arlit and raised the alarm, he said. Mr Alhacen told the BBC's Hausa service the bodies of 52 children, 33 women and seven men had been found and been given Muslim burials, Mr Alhacen said. He said that it was most likely that the people were from Niger, judging by their dress and how the women's hair was braided. Korans and tablets used by children at madrassas [Islamic school] were found amongst the belongings, said Mr Alhacen. "The corpses were decomposed; it was horrible," Mr Alhacen said. ''What was shocking was that they were small. There was a dead woman holding her baby," he added. Given that so many of those found were teenagers, Mr Alhacen said it was possible they were on their way to low-paid jobs in neighbouring Algeria. About 80,000 migrants cross the Sahara desert through Niger every year, according to John Ging, director of the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs. "They are basically economic migrants. They are in search of work. They are so impoverished that they have to make these hazardous journeys," he told the BBC's Newsday programme. Niger is one of the world's poorest countries and frequently suffers from drought and food crises.

8 killed in boat disaster in Oti River

http://www.gistonthis.com The bodies of eight women, including a pregnant woman, who perished when a boat on which they were travelling capsized in the Oti River in the Krachi East District of the Volta Region last Monday evening, have been retrieved. The women were part of 19 passengers travelling on board the boat named, Oti Transport, last Monday around 6:30pm when it capsized. The eight women unfortunately got drowned. The Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of Zoomlion, Francis Tawiah, who confirmed this to Daily Guide, noted that the passengers were returning from Wulembo to Dambai after going to harvest tubers of yam and rice that day from their farms. When they were about reaching Dambai, the boat, filled with over 3000 tubers of yam and 15 sacks of rice, hit a tree stump in the river causing the boat to capsize. A rescue team comprising the Ghana Navy and Zoil Lifeguards stationed at Dambai rushed in to save the situation, but the boat sunk faster. As a result, they prefer to travel unprotected, at the peril of their lives. Hundreds of British tourists are flying back to the UK from Kenya after the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warned of a "high threat" from terrorism. Similar advice has been issued by the governments of France, Australia and the USA - prompting travel company Thomson to begin evacuating its 400 customers from the country. Holidaymakers are being advised to leave unless there is "an essential reason to remain". A Sky source said the threat was not specific to British people and no precise plot had been uncovered. Thompson is said to be flying all of its 400 customers back to the UK "The advice to consider leaving is due to a general worsening of the security situation over time," the source said. Another source claimed there was "an increased threat to Western nationals since Westgate" - a reference to the attack on the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi last September by the Somalian terror group al-Shabaab in which at least 67 people died. The FCO website has a map of Kenya marking the areas of concern. These include anywhere within 60km of the Kenya-Somali border, the Eastleigh area of Nairobi and Mombasa Island. The advisory does not cover tourist areas of Diani or Moi international airport which serves the city of Mombasa. The areas of concern, according to the FCO website Explaining the threat, the advice reads: "There is a high threat from terrorism, including kidnapping. The main threat comes from extremists linked to al-Shabaab, a militant group that has carried out attacks in Kenya in response to Kenya's military intervention in Somalia. "There has been a spate of small-scale grenade, bomb and armed attacks in Nairobi (especially the area of Eastleigh), Mombasa, and North Eastern Province." The US cited hotels, nightclubs and shopping centres in Mombasa as possible targets. One flight carrying returning holidaymakers arrived in Gatwick airport on Friday morning and another is due in late on Friday. They had been scheduled to fly on May 20 and 27. The Foreign Office has warned against all but essential travel British holidaymaker Matilda Evan at Moi international airport said: "Six days of my holiday have gone to waste just like that. But again, when your government tells you to leave for security reasons, what else can you do?" Kenyan authorities have pledged to beef up security after the attacks but insisted visitors were safe. Karanja Kibicho, principal secretary at Kenya's foreign affairs department, said the advisories were "obviously unfriendly acts". Interior Ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka added: "The threats are perpetual, we are at war. But we have not received any specific threat on the hotels." An attack on a market area in Mombasa on May 4 killed seven people As well as the shopping mall raid, explosions in Nairobi and Mombasa on May 3 and 4, which Kenya blames on al-Shabaab, left seven people dead. Three explosions rocked the city of Jos in central Nigeria on Tuesday, two local journalists said. The blasts caused casualties, but it was not immediately clear how many. A journalist on the scene of the first explosion called it "massive." People were screaming and running, some covered in blood. Some had to be carried away, the journalist said. The first blast was a bomb detonated at the Terminus market, where food and clothes are sold, the journalists said. The second blast was at the same market and could have been a bomb or gas canister ignited by the first bomb. The third explosion was at Abuja market, which sells shoes, the journalists said. When CNN tried to speak with a nurse at a local hospital by phone, she was unable to hear because of victims' cries and screams. Late Sunday, a bomb in the northern Nigerian city of Kano killed at least four people, according to local police. The blast occurred at a busy intersection in a predominantly Christian area of the city and left several cars burning, Kano police spokesman Rabilu Ringim said. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, the spokesman said. Terrorism in Nigeria has been in the spotlight recently since more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped by the militant group Boko Haram. The terror group abducted 276 girls on April 14 from a boarding school in Chibok in northeastern Nigeria. Dozens escaped, but more than 200 girls are still missing.
