KARACHI: Two terrorists have been killed while three personnel from the Airport Security Force (ASF) and one each from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have been killed following an armed attack at the Karachi airport.

According to initial reports, four armed attackers hurled grenades and opened fire as they entered the tarmac from fokker gate. This led to an exchange of fire between ASF personnel and the gunmen.

Gunshots and blasts were being heard with intervals outside the airport and flight operations have been suspended.

Two planes were partially damaged in the terrorist attack. TV footage showed one of the planes had caught fire.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif contacted DG Rangers Rizwan Akhtar and directed him to ensure safety of all the passengers at the airport.

Pakistan Army personnel have also arrived to assist ASF and other Law Enforcement Agencies.

According to DG ISPR Asim Bajwa, Pakistan Army troops have started reaching the airport and taking positions. In a series of tweets the DG ISPR added that proper coordination has being ensured for optimum effect and the DG Rangers was present at the airport leading the operation. He added that the operation was being supervised by Corps Commander.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has ordered an inquiry into the attack.

Emergency has been declared at Jinnah, Civil and Abbasi Shaheed Hospitals.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah arrived at the airport after the reports of attack.

Passengers are advised to adjust travel plans as flight from Karachi are being diverted.

Talking to media at the airport, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said CM Sindh Qaim Ali Shah, who is also Sindh Home Minister, arrived on the directives of Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

He declined to comment on the sensitive information, saying exchange of fire was continuing and it was premature to comment on it.

However, he said according to his information no aircraft was damaged in the attack.

Flights to Karachi have been diverted to Nawabshah.

5 Americans Killed In Afghanistan, in \'Friendly Fire\' accident KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Five Americans troops were killed in an apparent friendly fire incident in southern Afghanistan, a U.S. defense official said Tuesday, in one of the worst such incidents involving United States or coalition troops since the start of the nearly 14 year war.

The official insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly to journalists.

The U.S.-led international coalition said the service members were killed in an apparent friendly fire incident, which an Afghan official said took place in southern Zabul province. A statement said all five soldiers died on Monday but did not give further details on the attack or the nationality of the soldiers.

If confirmed, it would be one of the most serious cases involving coalition-on-coalition friendly fire during the war.

BRAZIL WORLD CUP 2014 - Police Clash with Protesters at a Metro Strike in Sao Paulo

Police use tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters at a metro strike in Sao Paulo
A metro strike prompts protests in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, where the World Cup will kick off in six days

Military Police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades on protesters during a metro strike in Sao Paulo on Friday morning, June 6, local media reported.

Strong images were released by Media Ninja, an independent media organization which has accompanied popular protests in Brazil since the outbreak of demonstrations during the Confederations Cup last year.

In the video, protesters were approached by Military Policemen and threatened with guns, they then chased demonstrators out of the space with batons.

Subway workers in Sao Paulo were on Saturday to stage the third day of a strike that has brought chaos to the Brazilian city due to host the World Cup opener, as Fifa\'s vice-president urged authorities to make sure fans could get to the match.

Jim Boyce told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper that the protests could cause difficulties for those trying to attend Thursday\'s opening match.

A public transport strike has caused traffic chaos in Brazil\'s largest city, Sao Paulo, a week before it hosts the opening match of the World Cup.

Half of all underground stations were closed as transport workers walked out, demanding a 10% pay rise.

Angry commuters stormed the Itaquera station, nearest the stadium where Brazil will play Croatia on 12 June.

Police and other public sector workers say they will also strike in the next few weeks if their demands are not met.

This is the latest setback in Brazil\'s preparations for the World Cup, which have been criticised by the tournament\'s global organisers.

But Fifa President Sepp Blatter has called on the Brazilian people to do all they can to support the World Cup.

The MACBAN official, who is in Garkin Fulani, put the number of women kidnapped at as many as 40.
The suspected militants came into the village in broad daylight on Saturday, heavily armed and wearing military uniforms.

Militants have taken control of parts of Mosul, officials say, on a fifth day of fighting in the northern Iraqi city. Overnight, hundreds of men armed with rocket-propelled grenades, sniper rifles and machine-guns seized the provincial government's headquarters. They also destroyed several police stations before moving towards the top-security prison and military airport. On Tuesday morning, one interior ministry official said Mosul was "outside the control of the state". In the past week, the jihadist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and its allies have carried out major attacks on cities and towns in western and northern Iraq, killing scores of people. Parts of Ramadi, the capital of the western province of Anbar, and much of the nearby city of Falluja have been under their control since late December, with the security forces unable to dislodge them. 5 Americans Killed In Afghanistan, in 'Friendly Fire' accident KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Five Americans troops were killed in an apparent friendly fire incident in southern Afghanistan, a U.S. defense official said Tuesday, in one of the worst such incidents involving United States or coalition troops since the start of the nearly 14 year war. "The casualties occurred during a security operation when their unit came into contact with enemy forces. Tragically, there is the possibility that fratricide may have been involved. The incident is under investigation. Our thoughts are with the families of those killed during this difficult time," the coalition said in an announcement. One of the worst came in April 2002 when four Canadian soldiers were killed when an American F-16 jet fighter dropped a bomb on a group near a night firing exercise in southern Kandahar. A senior police official in southern Zabul said the coalition soldiers may have been killed when they called for close air support. Provincial police chief Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rooghlawanay said there was a joint operation by Afghan and NATO troops in the area's Arghandab district early Monday. After that operation was over, the troops came under attack from the Taliban and called in air support, he said. "After the operation was over on the way back, the joint forces came under the attack of insurgents, then foreign forces called for an air support. Unfortunately five NATO soldiers and one Afghan army officer were killed mistakenly by NATO air strike," Rooghlawanay said. There was no way to independently confirm Rooghlawanay's comments. The coalition would not comment and NATO headquarters in Brussels also declined to comment. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack against the joint force. The insurgents have intensified attacks on Afghan and foreign forces ahead of the country's presidential election runoff Saturday. Officials are concerned there could be more violence around the time of the vote, although the first round in April passed relatively peacefully. A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said a battle took place on Monday night between foreign troops and Taliban fighters in the Arghandab district. Ahmadi claimed a "huge number" of NATO soldiers were killed or wounded in the fighting. The Taliban often exaggerate their claims. Separately, a NATO statement said a service member died Monday as a result of a non-battle injury in eastern Afghanistan. The deaths bring to 36 the number of NATO soldiers killed so far this year in Afghanistan, with eight service members killed in June. Casualties have been falling in the U.S.-led military coalition as its forces pull back to allow the Afghan army and police to fight the Taliban insurgency. All combat troops are scheduled to be withdrawn from the country by the end of this year.

Subway workers in Sao Paulo were on Saturday to stage the third day of a strike that has brought chaos to the Brazilian city due to host the World Cup opener, as Fifa's vice-president urged authorities to make sure fans could get to the match. Jim Boyce told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper that the protests could cause difficulties for those trying to attend Thursday's opening match. A public transport strike has caused traffic chaos in Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo, a week before it hosts the opening match of the World Cup. This is the latest setback in Brazil's preparations for the World Cup, which have been criticised by the tournament's global organisers. But Fifa President Sepp Blatter has called on the Brazilian people to do all they can to support the World Cup. "We at Fifa, we are confident. It will be a celebration," Mr Blatter told reporters as he arrived in Sao Paulo amid the traffic chaos. Commuters knocked down barriers set up by striking workers at the station closest to the Itaquerao stadium "We need to go to work," shouted commuters before jumping on the tracks at the Itaquera station. The state-owned underground company has offered a 8.7% pay rise, which was rejected by the unions which declared the strike for an undetermined period. The authorities said they would sack staff if they failed to meet legal requirements and keep at least 70% of public transport services running. "If we gave them a 10% rise, all other state workers would demand the same," Mr Fernandes told Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. Even some of Fifa's executives could not avoid the problems caused by the strike, as they sat in traffic jams for hours, trying to get across the city. Union leaders on Sao Paulo's metro system deny the strike has anything to do with the World Cup, but everything to do with needing higher salaries to keep pace with inflation. 400 'Robocop' style military police set to patrol the World Cup in Brazil next month closely resemble the cops depicted in Terry Gilliam's cult 1985 classic film Brazil, in which a totalitarian government rules a dystopian society with a bureaucratic iron fist. Las Vegas Shooting: Killer Shouted
Las Vegas Shooting: Killer Shouted "THIS IS A REVOLUTION!" During Attack
  • Order:

  • Updated: 10 Jun 2014
The shooters who killed a pair of police officers and a bystander who tried to stop them on Sunday in Las Vegas had expressed anti-government views, according to police, who are working to officially determine a motive in the violent episode. "There is no doubt that the suspects have an ideology that's along the lines of militia and white supremacists," said Kevin C. McMahill, assistant sheriff of Clark County, during a news conference Monday. Police identified the shooters as Jerad Miller, 31, and his wife, Amanda Miller, 22. The couple shot and killed Igor Soldo and Alyn Beck, two Las Vegas police officers, inside a CiCi's Pizza. They then went into a nearby Wal-Mart, where they fatally shot Joseph Wilcox, who was shopping in the store and tried to stop the attackers. After a firefight with police officers inside the store, the couple took their own lives. While authorities said they believed this was an isolated, random act, they also said they were investigating the ideology of the two shooters. They believe that the fact that they placed a swastika on the bodies of one of the people they killed Sunday suggested that they equated law enforcement "with the Nazi movement," McMahill said. Police also said they are investigating reports that one or both of the Millers went to the Nevada ranch of Cliven Bundy during a standoff with federal authorities earlier this year. A neighbor told the Los Angeles Times that on Sunday morning, Jerad Miller had pulled out swastikas and an Army insignia and said he was going to put one on every police officer they killed. "I'm thinking, 'Right. They're not going to do that," Kelly Fielder said. "I should have called the cops. I feel I have the deaths of five people on my shoulders. The signs were there." Fielder described Jerad Miller as hateful of the government and of President Obama, while she said Amanda Miller was "a good girl who would do anything to make her man happy." The pair had numerous handguns, a shotgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition with them on Sunday. "It appeared as if they were prepared for a lengthy gun battle," McMahill said. Authorities released additional details about how the shooting unfolded in the strip mall about 11 miles away from the lights of the Las Vegas Strip. The couple first went into a CiCi's Pizza at about 11:20 a.m., finding two officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on their lunch break. Jerad Miller shot and killed Officer Igor Soldo, 31, who was married with a baby, police said. Both Millers then fired multiple shots at Alyn Beck, 41, a married father of six. The pair then took the slain officers out of their booth and laid them on the ground, covering Beck with a yellow Gadsden flag that read "Don't Tread on Me" and placing a swastika on his body. They also pinned a note to Salvo that read, "This is the beginning of the revolution," McMahill said, and they repeated that phrase to people in the restaurant before leaving and heading to a nearby Wal-Mart. Inside the Wal-Mart, Jerad Miller fired a single shot and told the shoppers to get out, again talking about "a revolution." Joseph Wilcox, who was standing near the registers and carrying a concealed weapon, told his friend he was going to confront the shooters. Wilcox, 31, "immediately and heroically moved towards" Miller, McMahill said. But as went to confront the shooter, he walked right by Amanda Miller, who shot and killed Wilcox. "Joseph died attempting to protect others," Clark County Sheriff Douglas C. Gillespie said at the news conference. "His death is completely senseless." Police had by this point received multiple 911 calls from the restaurant and the store. Two five-member police teams wielding rifles and other weapons went into the store, one near the front and one in the back, and began exchanging gunfire with the shooters. Both shooters had gunshot wounds at that point, police said, though it's unclear exactly when they were wounded and by whom.

Thousands of protesters have continued to take to the streets of Madrid and other Spanish cities calling for a referendum to abolish Spain's monarchy almost a week after King Juan Carlos abdicated in favour of his son. On Saturday, dozens of left-wing political parties and citizens organisations came together in support of republicanism. "Spain, tomorrow, will be republican," they chanted, waving the red, purple and gold flags of the country's second republic, proclaimed in 1931 then overthrown eight years later by General Francisco Franco at the end of the country's civil war. The anti-monarchist movement, born out of frustration with the political system, corruption, and unemployment, sees Spain's royal family, which has seen its popularity drop after a spate of scandals over the last three years, as a main part of the problem. "We don't want them to think we are like babies, that we can't decide what we want. We don't want a king, we want to choose," Mercedes Trujillo, an anti-monarchist campaigner, told Al Jazeera. Monarchy support Supporters of the monarchy have also held their own smaller rallies. They say a president cannot unite Spain like a king can. If the People's Party and Socialist party think that Felipe has the confidence of the citizens, he should submit to a referendum. Pablo Iglesias, Podemos party leader "[The king] has been for socialists, for populists, he has spoken to governors, presidents from all over the world no matter their ideology. A president of a Republic might have issues [with that]," Alberto Nunez, a supporter of the royal family, told Al Jazeera. Forty-six-year-old Crown Prince Felipe is due to be coronated, probably on June 19, in a joint session of parliament, whose members, both in the ruling party and in opposition, overwhelmingly support the monarchy. But a string of scandalas have caused a dramatic drop in the monarchy's popularity, which has also been hit by the general loss of faith in Spain's institutions that has accompanied its economic crisis. Those feelings were evident in the results of the European Parliament elections on May 25 which saw a collapse in support for the two traditional parties. Among the new left-wing parties was Podemos, a new party that emerged from the "Indignants" protest movement of 2011. Calls for referendum "We want to give a voice to the people. Why is it a problem to organise a referendum? Why is it a problem to give Spaniards the right to decide their future?" asked one of the party's leaders, Pablo Iglesias. "If the People's Party and Socialist party think that Felipe has the confidence of the citizens, he should submit to a referendum," Iglesias said. Crowned in November 1975, Juan Carlos won wide respect for his role in building modern Spain. But a corruption scandal struck his family in 2011 at the height of an economic crisis and undermined his popularity. Years of economic crisis "have awakened in us a desire for renewal, to overcome and correct mistakes and open the way to a decidedly better future," the king said in a televised address. "Today a younger generation deserves to step into the front line, with new energies," he said.
