The Pope is due to arrive Jordan at the start of a three-day visit to the Middle East which will also take him to Israel and the Palestinian territories.
Pope Francis will first travel to Amman, where he will celebrate Mass in a stadium, and later meet Syrian refugees.
The official purpose of the visit is to improve ties with the Orthodox Church.
But correspondents say many will expect Pope Francis to use his influence to try to ease tensions in the region.
Restraining orders
The Pope will be accompanied by a rabbi and an imam - friends from his native Argentina - and hopes to improve relations between Christians, Muslims and Jews in the Holy Land.
His journey comes only a few weeks after the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed.
Israel has issued restraining orders against several Jewish right-wing activists this week over concerns that they could try to disrupt the visit.

Police say multiple people have been shot on the Seattle Pacific University campus.
SEATTLE (AP) - A lone gunman armed with a shotgun opened fire Thursday in a building at a small Seattle university, fatally wounding one person before a student subdued him with pepper spray as he tried to reload, Seattle police said.

A student building monitor at Seattle Pacific University disarmed the gunman after he entered the foyer at Otto Miller Hall, and several other students jumped on top of him and pinned him down until police officers arrived, police said.

SEATTLE -- At least six people have been shot at Seattle Pacific University and a suspect is in custody, Seattle police said.

Seattle fire officials say a gunman is also wounded.
The victims\' conditions are not known, but Seattle Fire officials say they have taken four of the wounded to Harborview Medical Center with wounds varying from minor to life threatening.

Seattle police originally said they were looking for a second attacker but have since determined there is only the one suspect.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m. near the intersection of 3rd Ave. West and West Nickerson Street. Police report two victims were at Otto Miller Hall.

Witness Briana Clarke was inside Otto Miller Hall when the shots rang out. She was still unsure what was happening when she saw students running down the halls.

Pope Francis to arrive in Jordan for Middle East visit | BREAKING NEWS - 24 MAY 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS The Pope is due to arrive Jordan at the start of a three-day visit to the Middle East which will also take him to Israel and the Palestinian territories. Restraining orders The Pope will be accompanied by a rabbi and an imam - friends from his native Argentina - and hopes to improve relations between Christians, Muslims and Jews in the Holy Land. His journey comes only a few weeks after the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed. Israel has issued restraining orders against several Jewish right-wing activists this week over concerns that they could try to disrupt the visit. Police said offensive "anti-Christian graffiti" was discovered on the wall of a church in the southern city of Beersheba on Friday. The Pope's journey marks the 50th anniversary of the historic meeting in Jerusalem between Pope Paul VI and the head of the Orthodox Church, Patriarch Athenagoras. The meeting ended 900 years of separation and enduring antagonism between the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity. On Sunday, Pope Francis will travel to Bethlehem in the West Bank and preside over Mass in Manger Square, near the site where Jesus is believed to have been born. He will also meet the current Ecumenical Orthodox Patriarch, Bartholomew, and they will sign a declaration of friendship. Tens of thousands across Spain have taken to the streets to demand a referendum on whether the country should keep its monarchy or be proclaimed a republic following the abdication of King Juan Carlos I. The biggest rally, held in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square, united anti-monarchist activists under the 'Monarchy No Thanks' campaign. Royal rise & fall: 8 key moments of King Juan Carlos' reign Thousands of people carrying Republican flags flooded the capital hours after the 76-year-old monarch announced his resignation in favor of his 46 year-old son. Spain's 15-M social movement launched the proposal for a protest against the monarchy and the declaration of a republic. "Spain, tomorrow, will be Republican," protesters chanted. They claimed that at least 20,000 police officers were deployed throughout the city to ensure order. The anti-monarchist movement gained momentum in left parties, including Izquierda Unida (IU), the third political force in Spain. The call for protests spread across social networks to over 50 Spanish cities just minutes after the king's abdication was announced Monday morning. Colombian Government And FARC Rebels Setting Up Truth Commission.

The Colombian government and the Farc rebel group have agreed to set up a truth commission to investigate the deaths of thousands of people in five decades of conflict. They have agreed to hear the demands of victims, who will travel to Cuba, where the peace talks are taking place. The announcement is being seen as a significant step towards peace. Some 220,000 people, many of them civilians, are estimated to have died in the conflict. "The rights of the victims are non-negotiable," says a statement released in Havana. The document lays out 10 points that will be the basis for discussions in the next round of talks, focusing on the victims of the conflict. It says that the "victims must be recognised not only in their position as victims, but as citizens with rights". The "victims of human rights abuses" have the right to the truth, justice, compensation and the guarantee that such violations will never happen again, says the document. Victims of the conflict and their relatives will go to Havana, apparently in the near future, to share their experiences. The acknowledgment by the guerrillas that there were victims in the conflict has been seen in Colombia as a historic statement, says the BBC's Arturo Wallace in Bogota. The left-wing rebels and the government have so far rejected allegations of human rights abuses and blamed each other for the deaths and the displacement of at least 3 million people. "Today is a special day. The day of the victims has arrived. We have made a huge step. The Havana process is not simply a closed door conversation about clashes," said government negotiator Humberto de la Calle. "Each day we feel closer to the mountaintop, to the Mount Everest of rights, which is peace. Without that no other rights are possible," said rebel negotiator Ivan Marquez. Peace and impunity The peace process launched by President Juan Manuel Santos in November 2012 is one of the most controversial issues in the debate ahead of Sunday's presidential election. Mr Santos has vowed to carry on negotiating with the left-wing rebels if he is elected to a second term. His rival in the run-off vote, right-wing candidate Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, initially said he was willing to put an end to the talks. But he is now saying that the government would proceed with the negotiations provided the Farc accepted tougher conditions. There will be no "peace with impunity," said Mr Zuluaga. The presidential election has become for many a referendum on the validity of the peace process, says our correspondent. There has been agreement on three of the six points in the agenda being negotiated in Cuba: land reform, political participation and illicit drugs. The talks now enter a new phase with the debate on the rights of the victims.

BENOUVILLE, France, June 6 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin held brief talks on the sidelines of D-Day anniversary celebrations in Normandy, Hollande's office said on Friday. A White House official confirmed that an "informal" meeting had taken place, saying it had lasted 10-15 minutes. (Reporting By Elizabeth Pineau, Roberta Rampton and Jeff Mason; Writing by Nick Vinocur; editing by Mark John) BENOUVILLE, France (AP) - President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke Friday on the sidelines of a lunch for world leaders attending D-Day commemoration ceremonies, marking their first face-to-face conversation since the crisis in Ukraine erupted. The conversation was informal and lasted 10-15 minutes inside a chateau where the leaders ate lunch, the White House said. Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Obama and Putin had exchanged views about the situation in Ukraine and the crisis in the east, where Ukrainian forces have been fighting with pro-Russian insurgents. "Putin and Obama spoke for the need to end violence and fighting as quickly as possible," Peskov said. As leaders posed outside the building for a group photo before the lunch, Obama and Putin appeared to be avoiding each other deliberately. But once inside, they made time for their first such exchange since Putin annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula. As the crisis as developed, Obama and Putin spoke multiple times by phone. But they had not met in person until their mutual interest in paying tribute to the bravery of Allied forces 70 years ago brought them both to the shores of France. Obama told reporters Thursday that if he and Putin ended up speaking, he would tell the Russian leader that he has a new path to engage with Ukraine through President-elect Petro Poroshenko, who is scheduled to take office Saturday. "If he does not, if he continues a strategy of undermining the sovereignty of Ukraine, then we have no choice but to respond" with more sanctions, Obama said. Obama, who said his relationship with Putin is "businesslike," expressed hope that the Russian leader is "moving in a new direction" on Ukraine since he didn't immediately denounce Poroshenko's election on May 25. "But I think we have to see what he does and not what he says," Obama said. Putin and Poroshenko also met in France on Friday, their first such meeting since Poroshenko was elected last month. The Kremlin said Putin and Poroshenko of their desire for a quick end to hostilities in southeastern Ukraine. The Obama-Putin meeting followed a gathering earlier in the week in Brussels of leaders from the Group of Seven wealthier nations who pointedly met without Putin. Afterward, the leaders said the Russian president could avoid tougher sanctions in part by recognizing the legitimacy of the government that takes over in Ukraine on Saturday and ending support for an insurgency in eastern Ukrainian cities that the U.S. has said is backed by the Kremlin. There was no mention of rolling back Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea. The U.S. and its allies have said the move is illegal and that they will not recognize it. Friday's exchange came during a lunch hosted by French President Francois Hollande in Benouville. Obama and Putin were both in France, as were the other world figures, for the 70th anniversary of Allied troops storming the beaches at Normandy. Putin and Charles set to meet at Sword beach for the first time since Prince said Russia was acting like Hitler Charles last month likened Putin's behaviour in Ukraine to that of Hitler Royal made comment to a Jewish woman who fled Holocaust He said: 'And now Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler' Cameron last night told Putin the Ukraine situation is 'not acceptable' President Obama meet Putin face to face off camera video footage funny hilarious D-Day 70th anniversary President Obama meet Putin face to face off camera video footage funny hilarious D-Day 70th anniversary President Obama meet Putin face to face off camera video footage funny hilarious D-Day 70th anniversary President Obama meet Putin face to face off camera video footage funny hilarious D-Day 70th anniversary CNN Jumbotron

The victims' conditions are not known, but Seattle Fire officials say they have taken four of the wounded to Harborview Medical Center with wounds varying from minor to life threatening. "I first heard two muffled shots that I thought were two helium balloons," she said. Clarke then said she saw five to seven injured students inside the building. When she went outside, she saw several more bloodied students. "Seeing as how this is on a very, very safe campus in a very safe area made it much more shocking at first," she said. University counselor Karen Altus was in her office -- less than a block from the crime scene -- when she got an alert about the shooting. "I'm in my office with four students with the blinds closed. The we're sitting on the floor with the door locked, very scared," she said. Police officials say one person was in custody on the SPU campus and that officers and medics were on the scene. SPU officials report the campus is on lockdown and police are still searching campus for any potential additional suspects. The situation is still fluid and more details will be posted as they become available. raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU
