The structure of glycogen consists of units of glucose linked in the alpha 1-4 configuration with branches linked in the 1-6 configuration. 2. Glycogen differs from starch in the amount of branching (much more). 3. Glycogen is a storage form of energy that can yield ATP very quickly, because glucose-1-phosphate can be released very quickly. 4. You should know the function/activites of the enzymes in glycogen breakdown - glycogen phosphorylase, phosphoglucomutase, and debranching enzyme. 5. Glycogen phosphorylase action on glycogen yields glucose-1-phosphate. Glycogen phosphorylase exists in two forms - phosphorylase a and phosphorylase b. Phosphorylase a differs from phosphorylase b only in that phosphorylase a contains two phosphates and phosphorylase b contains none. Phosphate is added to glycogen phosphorylase by the enzyme phosphorylase kinase. 6. Glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) has many different fates and sources. First, breakdown of glycogen produces G1P, which is readily converted to G6P. G6P can then go three different directions. In muscle and brain (and most other tissues), G6P enters glycolysis. In liver only, G6P enters gluconeogenesis and is converted to glucose for export to the bloodstream. Deuterium depletion of water in cell culture media or body fluids temporarily decelerates cell growth in vitro and induces tumor regression in vivo. The exact mechanism and the effects of deuterium depletion on mammalian cell intermediary metabolism are not fully known. Potential mechanisms of carcinogenesis include the following: 1) Deuterium incorporation from common water into DNA increases its fragility thus accelerates mutations, aging and cancer; 2) Deuterium affects the kinetics of reductive synthesis and the generation of NADP+ thus altering membrane fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis; 3) Deuterium alters tricarboxylic acid cycle and intermediary metabolism by altering carbon flow and the rate of product synthesis and energy production. RNA & DNA RNA=O RNA é um polímero de nucleótidos, geralmente em cadeia simples, formado por moléculas de dimensões muito inferiores às do DNA. O RNA é constituído por uma pentose (Ribose), por um grupo fosfato e uma base azotada (nitrogenada) que pode ser adenina (A), guanina (G), citosina (C) e Uracila (U). O RNA forma-se no núcleo e migra para o citoplasma. O RNA apresenta um tipo de cadeia diferente da do DNA; tem geralmente numa só cadeia simples que pode, por vezes, ser dobrada. A quantidade de RNA é variável de célula para célula e com a atividade celular. DNA=O DNA é a molécula orgânica que, quando transcrita em RNA, tem a capacidade de codificar proteínas. Tem a forma parecida com uma escada espiral cuja disposição dos degraus se dá em quatro partes moleculares diferentes. Esta disposição constitui as chamadas quatro letras do código genético.
