Get to know ECLAC's sessions

In 2014 ECLAC celebrates its thirty-fifth session, which will take place May 5-9 in Lima. These sessions constitute the organization's most important biennial meetings and are attended by its 44 member states and 12 associate members. As this video explains, during the meeting, countries will have the opportunity to discuss the region's economic, social and environmental development, examine the activities carried out by the Commission during the previous biennium and set priorities for the work agenda for the next two years. As at every session, ECLAC will present a main document that analyzes the major development issues in the region. In Lima, the Commission will release a new position paper that will give continuity to its last two reports, focused on equality and delivered in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Compacts for Equality: Message by ECLAC Executive Secretary

ECLAC Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, explains in this video the main proposal the organization lays out to Latin American and Caribbean countries on its document "Compacts for Equality: Towards a Sustainable Future", released during its Fifty-fifth session, May 5-9 in Lima. In this position paper, ECLAC suggests that the region's countries build social compacts with a medium- and long-term vision based on various axes for transformation in several spheres, such as fiscal policy, natural resources, environment, work and social protection, among others. This message is part of a trilogy focused on equality started in 2010, when ECLAC said that it was time for equality in the region, and that growth was essential for equality, and equality essential for growth. In 2012, this organization insisted on the need for structural change to enable countries to diversify their economies by implementing active industrial policies. Now ECLAC recommends the countries the joint construction of compacts for equality for a sustainable future for Latin America and the Caribbean. China and Latin America and the Caribbean, trade and cooperation in the 21st century

This video presents how in just a decade, China has become a key trading partner for Latin America and the Caribbean. Trade between the two regions was 22 times greater in 2012 than in 2000. However, there is a trade deficit for most of the region's countries, and Chinese manufactures are pushing out Latin American products in their own markets and beyond. ECLAC considers that, in order to make better use of the link with China, the region needs to transform and diversify its export pattern to reduce dependency on raw materials. The Commission also recommends defining a regional agenda of priorities to strengthen Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole, and help it to become a genuine strategic partner for the world's fastest growing economy.
