One journalist was even killed by a rocket during a protest in Rio de Janeiro. Now the Government says it wants to protect journalists from both protesters and Police forces. The guide that will be effective immediately, demands that the Police, follows the rule of law and protect the members of the Press. Another measure is to prohibit officers from confiscating or destroying equipment like cameras and tape recorders. They are also asking the media companies to provide a complete set of safety equipment to the journalists covering the demonstrations. Sao Paulo is the most violent city for reporters covering protests: out of the 133 cases of assaults recorded since the demonstrations started in June of last year, 63 occurred here. Next week, the government is expected to announce the results of an study on violence against the press, conducted in collaboration with United Nations and UNESCO. In São Paulo Military Police (MP) used at the end of yesterday afternoon, tear gas against demonstrators protesting against the governor of São Paulo, Geraldo Alckmin, opposite the Town Hall in the city center. The crackdown began after militants threw stones at the building's facade. The group, largely composed of people dressed in black with his face covered, went from Paulista Avenue, down the Avenue May 23 and passed through the Cathedral Square, before reaching the seat of the municipal legislature. On the way, the march was gaining membership and got to have, according to the PM, 2000 people. After the start of the crackdown, clashes continued until the Praça da Sé In Brasilia police released pepper gas against a group of journalists - including a AFP photographer, who needed medical treatment - protesting because a colleague had been attacked by a police dog.
