Mainline Protestant Churches and Israel: Their Problem and Ours (pt. 1)
Speaker: Eugene Korn Date: July 11, 2006 Mainline Protestant Churches and Israel -- Their Problem and Ours A number of mainline Protestant churches in the United States and Europe have heightened their rhetoric and hostility against Israel in recent years. Most famous is the 2004 Presbyterian Church USA resolution advocating divestment from specified companies doing business with Israel. This resolution was partly revoked last month, yet the strategic threat remains. Liberal churches in America and Europe promote the Palestinian narrative and some espouse implicit anti-Zionism. The economic and public relations campaigns have spread to universities and labour unions. Who are the players, what motivates them, and what can we expect for the future? Rabbi Dr. Eugene Korn is National Director of Jewish Affairs at the American Jewish Congress, where he is responsible for programs in interfaith relations and Jewish identity. Religion in America #40 "America's Religions," Ch. 43 Mainline Protestantism in the 20th Century
In this lecture/discussion video from my Spring 2014 Religion in America class at Marist college, we explore the themes discussed in the textbook for the class (America's Religions: From Their Origins to the Twenty-first Century 3rd. ed., by Peter Williams), focusing on Chapter 43, "Mainline Protestantism in the Later 20th Century" We discuss a number of features "mainline" churches have in common, and the origins of a number of these churches in mergers within denominational families, on the one hand, and shedding theological conservatives and fundamentalists, on the other hand. Many of these churches constituted the mainstream of American society until the 1960s and 1970s when significant differences of perspectives between more and more liberal leadership and the more moderate laity began to develop. All of the churches which fit under the rubric of "mainline" have been losing membership for several decades, partly through low birth rates, but also particularly through losing younger people to conservative churches or to secular lifestyles. Since videos discussing religion tend to get a number of polemical, poorly informed, and off-topic comments, I've set comments to require review and approval before they'll be publicly posted. The textbook used for this class can be purchased from Amazon here: http://amzn.to/LS32U4- published: 17 Apr 2014

Huge swaths of American culture are driven by manic spiritual anxiety and relentless supernatural worry. Radicals and traditionalists, liberals and conservatives, together with politicians, artists, environmentalists, followers of food fads, and the chattering classes of television commentators: America is filled with people frantically seeking confirmation of their own essential goodness. We are a nation desperate to stand on the side of morality--to know that we are righteous and dwell in the light. Or so Joseph Bottum argues in An Anxious Age, an account of modern America as a morality tale, formed by its spiritual disturbances. And the cause, he claims, is the most significant and least noticed historical fact of the last fifty years: the collapse of the Mainline Protestant churches that were the source of social consensus and cultural unity. Our dangerous spiritual anxieties, broken loose from the churches that once contained them, now madden everything in American life. Updating The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, Max Weber's sociological classic, An Anxious Age undertakes two case studies in contemporary social class, adrift in a nation without the religious understandings that gave it meaning. Looking at the college-educated elite he calls "The Poster Children," Bottum sees the post-Protestant heirs of the old Mainline Protestant domination of culture: dutiful descendants who claim the high social position of their Christian ancestors even while they reject their ancestors' Christianity. Turning to "The Swallows of Capistrano," the Catholics formed by the pontificate of John Paul II, Bottum evaluates the early victories--and later defeats--of the attempt to substitute Catholicism for the dying Mainline voice in public life. Sweeping across American intellectual and cultural history, An Anxious Age traces the course of national religion and warns about the strange angels and even stranger demons with which we now wrestle. Insightful and contrarian, wise and unexpected, An Anxious Age ranks among the great modern accounts of American culture. Praise for Joseph Bottum and An Anxious Age:- published: 20 Jan 2014
