Sat./Oct. 25, 2014 - McAlester, OK - Minor Home Repair Project. More than 70 volunteers helped with this year's event. They helped residents by putting plastic on windows, caulking windows/doors, mowing yards, doing yard work and more. Volunteers also wore pink shirts in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Other activities included: McAlester Fire Department picked up smoke alarm applications, Rebuilding Together-Kiamichi Country took applications for those needing major home repairs, Oklahoma Blood Institute did a blood drive, and coupon clipping for the military. Door prizes were given to volunteers plus a free lunch.

Kiamichi Country
History
The area was acquired by the United States through the Louisiana Purchase and became part of the new Arkansas Territory. On April 1, 1820, Arkansas created Miller County which included most of the land that would become Little Dixie. A post office at Miller Courthouse was established on September 7, 1824. Per a treaty signed on January 20, 1825, the land west of a line "one hundred paces east of Fort Smith, and running thence, due south, to Red river" was ceded to the Choctaw Indians. The residents west of the line made a futile attempt to be exempted from the treaty but failed. They burned the courthouse and most of the records before they left.
Some Choctaws had been moving into the region from Mississippi since the Treaty of Doak's Stand in 1820. Following the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830, the federal government began their forced removal. By 1834, nearly 8,000 Choctaws had arrived in their new land over the "trail of tears and death". At Nanih Waiya, near the present Tuskahoma Council House, they established a capital and adopted the first constitution ever written in what is now Oklahoma. The Choctaws actively supported the Confederacy during the Civil War and were allowed to keep most of their land in eastern Indian Territory. In 1898, after pressure from Washington, they agreed to an allotment plan administered by the Dawes Commission. Their excess lands and those of the allied Chickasaw were opened to settlement by non-Indians.

Fall River Pass Road, July 2015
While enroute to the WABDR trip I spent a few days wandering around the country shooting photos. However, I learned while passing through Rocky Mountain National Park that they actually have a dirt road to the higher elevations, and it had just opened the day before. So naturally I opted to drive and video it! This was Fourth of July weekend, and the park was packed. And despite what my video shows, so was this road. I'm sure I annoyed more than a few drivers behind me who were rushing up this beautiful drive when I'd drive pretty slowly to allow traffic in front of me to move out of the camera's field of view. And, of course, there was a bit of editing to ensure you heard the sounds of nature instead of the constantly passing traffic during the scenery shots. Anyway, it is a beau...

The Overland Adventures - High Water Mark Route - Ozark National Forest
6 guys, 4 rigs, 3 days in the Ozarks. This was our 3rd trip as a group, but our first time to the Ozark National Forest and our first multi-day overlanding trip. We spent a couple months prior to the trip planning our route, gathering and testing equipment, and modifying our rigs in hopes of making the trip go as smooth as possible. However, I learned while passing through Rocky Mountain National Park that they actually have a dirt road to the higher elevations, and it had just opened the day before. So naturally I opted to drive and video it!
This was Fourth of July weekend, and the park was packed. And despite what my video shows, so was this road.
