Pacific Islands Forum

The Pacific Islands Forum is an inter-governmental organization that aims to enhance cooperation between the independent countries of the Pacific Ocean. It was founded in 1971 as the South Pacific Forum. In 1999, the name was changed; Pacific Islands Forum is more inclusive of the Forum's Oceania-spanning membership of both north and south Pacific island countries, including Australia. It is an official observer at the United Nations.

The mission of the Pacific Islands Forum is “to work in support of Forum member governments, to enhance the economic and social well-being of the people of the South Pacific by fostering cooperation between governments and between international agencies, and by representing the interests of Forum members in ways agreed by the Forum”. Its decisions are implemented by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), which grew out of the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Co-operation (SPEC). As well as its role in harmonising regional positions on various political and policy issues, the Forum Secretariat has technical programmes in economic development, transport and trade. The Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General is the permanent Chairman of the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP).

'Tis

'Tis is a memoir written by Frank McCourt. Published in 1999, it begins where McCourt ended Angela's Ashes, his Pulitzer Prize winning memoir of his impoverished childhood in Ireland and his return to America.

Synopsis

The book begins as McCourt lands at Albany, New York, and quickly makes his way to New York City. Friendless and clueless about American customs, he struggles to integrate himself into American blue-collar society. He is then drafted into the US Army, sent to Europe, and rises to the rank of corporal. On his stay in Germany, he has confrontations with many people who try to show Frank how to get a Russian refugee girl to have sexual intercourse with him by giving her coffee or cigarettes. He is granted leave from the army as compensation for his exceptional service as a clerk-typist and goes back home to Ireland to see his family. He then decides to return to the US, where he attends New York University – despite never having graduated from high school. He falls in love with and eventually marries a middle-class American-born girl, Alberta Small (nicknamed Mike), whom he meets at university.

Tisá

Tisá (German: Tissa, earlier also Tyssa) is a village, which belongs to the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. The municipality covers an area of 11.85 square kilometres and has a population of 918 as of 2013. Tisá lies approximately 15 kilometres (9 mi) north of Ústí nad Labem and 84 km (52 mi) north of Prague and 3 kilometres (2 mi) south of borders with Germany. The village is situated in 548 - 550 meters above sea level.

History

Around the year of 500 a group of the Slavs came to the village. The origin of the name is from the Czech word "tis", meaning yew. In the 14th century the Vantenberks usurped an extensive area around Tetschen (Czech: Děčín) and built a stronghold named Šenov. Under the region of knights of Bünau (Czech: Bynov) there was a major economic expansion. In 1554 – 1557 Günter I developed a castle with a Lutheran church, presbytery, school, brewery and the name of the village was changed due to the castle into Schönstein. In 1631 Croatians and Swedes burned all of the objects in Tisá and Schönstein. In 1750 several factories were built, and the city became a cradle of the button industry.
