This was day two for me on the Ausable of what was supposed to be a longer trip, but you take what you can get at times. The river is beautiful and in the fall there were no other people out and about so I had the waterway and campsites to myself.
One of the things about the Ausable is the moderate current that will carry you along. In the summer, you will find more than a few tubers floating by at 3 to 5 mph. The water is crystal clear with the river running about 80-100 feet wide between Alcona Dam and Five Channels Dam.
If there was a problem, it was with the quickly changing weather we can face in the fall. On Oct. 21, the high temperature was in the 60's with a low that night in the mid 50's. On the second day, Oct. 22, again it was warm and clear, but the wind continued to be an issue and right around noon, a cold front started in while I was on Loud Pond and I was heading right into it. Having 25 - 30 mph gusts hitting me it made for a bit of an exciting paddle across the pond.
That night it dropped down to 32 F and I woke to a dead calm at my campsite just about one mile from the Five Channels dam.
There were a few items I was trying out while on the trip, a PFD from Stearns and dry bags from SealLine. I can't thank the firms enough for offering the products all of which worked well and the PFD really was appreciated when the winds hit me.
I also greatly appreciated the advice I received from the You Tuber
called Wintertrekker. If you want to find out about winter camping and extended solo canoe trips, this is the person to watch. His advice on dealing with the rough conditions I could face made for a much safer trip.

The PFD was the Avante 200 Paddlesports Life Vest. I am a big fan of reasonably priced gear and I was offered any PFD I wanted, but I chose this one. It comes in at a price around $35, was comfortable and easy to put on with the zipper front.

The three dry bags, part of the Nimbus line from SealLine, a division of Cascade Designs were honestly great. No messing around, just roll them up and they are sealed. The three sizes are a 5 liter, 10 liter and a 30 liter bag which provided plenty of storage. Prices on the bags are $19.99, $24.99 and $34.99 respectively. I was able to separate my gear in a way that I could access what was needed while leaving the other bags closed and in the canoe. You can find these online at pretty good prices and if you have not used them before, they are well worth the cost.

The Ausable is a wonderful river to try, but be aware the peak times can be busy, that is why I went in the fall when the day trippers and others would not be about.

The Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad, affectionately known as the "Old Put", was a single-track railroad line that ran from Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx to Brewster in Putnam Country. The motive power was first steam, and then diesel. With the exception of a short-lived spur line to Getty Square in Yonkers, the Put was never electrified. While that state-of-affairs doubtlessly lent to it's charm, it also hastened the Put's downfall. Because it effectively meant that trains on the Putnam Division could not enter Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, thereby forcing riders to switch trains in order to continue their journey into Manhattan. That, plus the fact that no fewer then three other train lines basically paralleled the Put, insured it's eventual abandonment.
But, from 1881 to 1958, the Put ran passenger railroad trains along what was probably the most scenically varied route in New York. The right-of-way followed the contours of the land, rather then simply blasting and leveling every inch of it. From it's terminus at Sedgwick Avenue, the Put moved from the urban industrialization of the South Bronx, to the bucolic sanctuary of Van Cortland Park, remarkably quickly. And, as it continued up through Westchester and into Putnam County, the route passed primarily through lightly-developed areas. In fact, prior to the construction of the Saw Mill River Parkway, followed later by the Major Deegan Expressway, the Put's right-of-way went through a countryside that was decidedly rural in character. Both highways parallel the Put along it's southern half, and both had a substantial impact on the railroad. The impact of the Saw Mill however, was mild compared to the changes wrought by the Deegan. The comparison that comes to mind is that of an artist's paintbrush vs.a vandal's sledgehammer.
To chronicle the history of the Put as both a railroad, and it's current incarnation as a "rails-to-trails" project, I am utilizing a combination of archival footage, and videotape taken of the line as it exists today. Whenever possible, I tried to match the archival footage with what we shot during our explorations. Some of the results are quite impressive.
The genesis of this project was the fact that I grew up a literal stones-throw from the Put tracks during the 1970's. We lived in Elmsford, NY which was a passenger stop along the Put, and the line still saw occasional freight movements during the time we lived there. My brothers and I spent a lot of hours along those tracks as kids, always thrilling to the sight of a freight train slowly rumbling along that overgrown roadbed. We moved north to Mt. Kisco, NY in 1975, and forgot all about the Old Put.
Upon learning of the fact that portions of the old right-of-way were being turned into biking and walking trails, my brother Keith and I decided to set out and explore it. That quickly turned into the decision to make a movie about the Put. I'd like to think that it is a worthwhile effort, albeit perhaps a bit amateurish. Most of the videotape we shot is of the southern portions of the line. Our intention was to return in order to do the upper Put, but that would likely result in a movie that is over an hour in length. So, we decided to deal briefly with the line from Briarcliff Manor, which was the last station we visited, up to Brewster, the northern terminus of the Put.

This was day two for me on the Ausable of what was supposed to be a longer trip, but you take what you can get at times. The river is beautiful and in the fall there were no other people out and about so I had the waterway and campsites to myself.
One of the things about the Ausable is the moderate current that will carry you along. In the summer, you will find more than a few tubers floating by at 3 to 5 mph. The water is crystal clear with the river running about 80-100 feet wide between Alcona Dam and Five Channels Dam.
If there was a problem, it was with the quickly changing weather we can face in the fall. On Oct. 21, the high temperature was in the 60's with a low that night in the mid 50's. On the second day, Oct. 22, again it was warm and clear, but the wind continued to be an issue and right around noon, a cold front started in while I was on Loud Pond and I was heading right into it. Having 25 - 30 mph gusts hitting me it made for a bit of an exciting paddle across the pond.
That night it dropped down to 32 F and I woke to a dead calm at my campsite just about one mile from the Five Channels dam.
There were a few items I was trying out while on the trip, a PFD from Stearns and dry bags from SealLine. I can't thank the firms enough for offering the products all of which worked well and the PFD really was appreciated when the winds hit me.
I also greatly appreciated the advice I received from the You Tuber
called Wintertrekker. If you want to find out about winter camping and extended solo canoe trips, this is the person to watch. His advice on dealing with the rough conditions I could face made for a much safer trip.

The PFD was the Avante 200 Paddlesports Life Vest. I am a big fan of reasonably priced gear and I was offered any PFD I wanted, but I chose this one. It comes in at a price around $35, was comfortable and easy to put on with the zipper front.

The three dry bags, part of the Nimbus line from SealLine, a division of Cascade Designs were honestly great. No messing around, just roll them up and they are sealed. The three sizes are a 5 liter, 10 liter and a 30 liter bag which provided plenty of storage. Prices on the bags are $19.99, $24.99 and $34.99 respectively. I was able to separate my gear in a way that I could access what was needed while leaving the other bags closed and in the canoe. You can find these online at pretty good prices and if you have not used them before, they are well worth the cost.

The Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad, affectionately known as the "Old Put", was a single-track railroad line that ran from Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx to Brewster in Putnam Country. The motive power was first steam, and then diesel. With the exception of a short-lived spur line to Getty Square in Yonkers, the Put was never electrified. While that state-of-affairs doubtlessly lent to it's charm, it also hastened the Put's downfall. Because it effectively meant that trains on the Putnam Division could not enter Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, thereby forcing riders to switch trains in order to continue their journey into Manhattan. That, plus the fact that no fewer then three other train lines basically paralleled the Put, insured it's eventual abandonment.
But, from 1881 to 1958, the Put ran passenger railroad trains along what was probably the most scenically varied route in New York. The right-of-way followed the contours of the land, rather then simply blasting and leveling every inch of it. From it's terminus at Sedgwick Avenue, the Put moved from the urban industrialization of the South Bronx, to the bucolic sanctuary of Van Cortland Park, remarkably quickly. And, as it continued up through Westchester and into Putnam County, the route passed primarily through lightly-developed areas. In fact, prior to the construction of the Saw Mill River Parkway, followed later by the Major Deegan Expressway, the Put's right-of-way went through a countryside that was decidedly rural in character. Both highways parallel the Put along it's southern half, and both had a substantial impact on the railroad. The impact of the Saw Mill however, was mild compared to the changes wrought by the Deegan. The comparison that comes to mind is that of an artist's paintbrush vs.a vandal's sledgehammer.
To chronicle the history of the Put as both a railroad, and it's current incarnation as a "rails-to-trails" project, I am utilizing a combination of archival footage, and videotape taken of the line as it exists today. Whenever possible, I tried to match the archival footage with what we shot during our explorations. Some of the results are quite impressive.
The genesis of this project was the fact that I grew up a literal stones-throw from the Put tracks during the 1970's. We lived in Elmsford, NY which was a passenger stop along the Put, and the line still saw occasional freight movements during the time we lived there. My brothers and I spent a lot of hours along those tracks as kids, always thrilling to the sight of a freight train slowly rumbling along that overgrown roadbed. We moved north to Mt. Kisco, NY in 1975, and forgot all about the Old Put.
Upon learning of the fact that portions of the old right-of-way were being turned into biking and walking trails, my brother Keith and I decided to set out and explore it. That quickly turned into the decision to make a movie about the Put. I'd like to think that it is a worthwhile effort, albeit perhaps a bit amateurish. Most of the videotape we shot is of the southern portions of the line. Our intention was to return in order to do the upper Put, but that would likely result in a movie that is over an hour in length. So, we decided to deal briefly with the line from Briarcliff Manor, which was the last station we visited, up to Brewster, the northern terminus of the Put.

Harlem River and The Hudson River In Northern Part Of Manhattan
I shot this video of the the Harlem River in the northern part of upper Manhattan during while I was a passenger on the Circle Cruise. The view coming out of the Harlem River where it opens onto the Hudson is absolutely stunning. Manaus is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. With a population of two million, it is the most populous city of Amazonas.
The city was founded in 1693-94 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a town in 1832 with the name of "Manaus", an altered spelling of the indigenous Manaós peoples, and legally transformed into a city on October 24, 1848, with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, Portuguese for "The City of the Margins of Black River". Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, and access to the city is primarily through boat or airplane. This isolation helped preserve both the nature as well as the culture of the city. The culture of Manaus, more than in any other urban area of Brazil, preserves the habits of Native Brazilian tribes. The city is the main entrance to visit the fauna and flora of the Brazilian Amazon. Few places in the world afford such a variety of plants, birds, insects, and fishes.
It was known at the beginning of the century, as "Heart of the Amazon" and "City of the Forest". Currently its main economic engine is the Industrial Pool of Manaus, the famous Free Economic Zone. The city has a free port and an international airport. Its manufactures include electronics, chemical products, and soap; there are distilling and ship construction industries. Manaus also exports Brazil nuts, rubber, jute and rosewood oil. It has a cathedral, opera house, zoological and botanical gardens, an ecopark and regional and native peoples museums.
With a population of 1.9 million people in 2014, Manaus is the most populous city in the Brazilian Amazon area and the 7th most populous in the country.[6] Located on the north bank of the Negro River, 11 miles (18 km) above the meeting of the rivers where the Negro merges with the Solimões, Manaus is 900 miles (1,450 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the hub of tourism for the rivers, the jungle lodges and the river cruises.
The Solimões and Negro rivers meet in Manaus and join to form the Amazon River (using the Brazilian definition of the river; elsewhere, Solimões is considered the upper part of the Amazon). Rubber made it the richest city in South America during the late 1800s. Rubber also helped Manaus earn its nickname, the "Paris of the Tropics". Many wealthy European families settled in Manaus and brought their love for sophisticated European art, architecture and culture with them. Manaus is also a duty-free zone, which has encouraged development in the region.

Love Cascade is in the Guedes bayou, with cold and crystal clear water, is accessible only by boat and, then, hiking through the Forest.
