Roy Marsden (born Roy Anthony Mould; 25 June 1941) is an English actor, who is probably best known for his portrayal of Adam Dalgliesh in the Anglia Television dramatisations of P. D. James's detective novels.
Marsden attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and spent four terms there. He attempted to unionise the students but was thwarted. After one argument he poured a bottle of ink down the front of the director's suit. Marsden recalled, "Two weeks later, he phoned me up and asked if I'd got a job or an agent. I said no, so he arranged for me to start work at a theatre in Nottingham, and who should be the student assistant manager there but Anthony Hopkins. I persuaded him to go to RADA."
In the early 1960s, Marsden worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and began to accumulate an extensive list of theatrical credits that include everything from Anton Chekhov and Henrik Ibsen to contemporary Soviet playwright Alexander Vampilov. His preference was for the alternative experimental theatres of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cambridge and Birmingham over London's commercial theatre.
The Sandbaggers is a British television drama series about men and women on the front lines of the Cold War. Set contemporaneously with its original broadcast on ITV in 1978 and 1980, The Sandbaggers examines the effect of the espionage game on the personal and professional lives of British and American intelligence specialists.
The protagonist is Neil D. Burnside (played by Roy Marsden), Director of Operations in Britain's Secret Intelligence Service (also known as MI6, although the name "MI6" is never uttered in the series). Burnside oversees, among others, a small, elite group of British intelligence officers: the Special Operations Section nicknamed the "Sandbaggers". This group is composed of highly trained officers whose work includes dangerous missions that tend to be politically sensitive or especially vital, such as escorting defectors across borders, carrying out assassinations, or rescuing other operatives who are in trouble behind the Iron Curtain.
In the series, the Central Intelligence Agency and SIS have a co-operative agreement to share intelligence. The Sandbaggers depicts SIS as so under-funded that it has become dependent on the CIA. Burnside consequently goes to great lengths to preserve the "Special Relationship" between the CIA and SIS—most notably in the episode of the same name. The personal price he pays in that episode sparks an obsession with the safety of his Sandbaggers and the survival of the special section in subsequent episodes, contributing to Burnside's gradual psychological unravelling and the series' unresolved cliffhanger ending.
Solomon (/ˈsɒləmən/; Hebrew: שְׁלֹמֹה, Modern Shlomo, Tiberian Šəlōmō ISO 259-3 Šlomo; Syriac: ܫܠܝܡܘܢ Shlemun; Arabic: سُليمان Sulaymān, also colloquially: Silimān or Slemān; Greek: Σολομών Solomōn; Latin: Salomon), also called Jedidiah (Hebrew יְדִידְיָהּ), was, according to the Bible (Book of Kings: 1 Kings 1–11; Book of Chronicles: 1 Chronicles 28–29, 2 Chronicles 1–9), Qur'an, and Hidden Words a fabulously wealthy and wise king of Israel and a son of David. The conventional dates of Solomon's reign are circa 970 to 931 BC, normally given in alignment with the dates of David's reign. He is described as the third king of the United Monarchy, which would break apart into the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah shortly after his death. Following the split, his patrilineal descendants ruled over Judah alone.
According to the Talmud, Solomon is one of the 48 prophets. In the Qur'an, he is considered a major prophet, and Muslims generally refer to him by the Arabic variant Sulayman, son of David. Solomon (Arabic سليمان Sulaymān) was, according to the Qur'an, a king of ancient Israel as well as the son of David. The Qur'an recognizes Solomon as a prophet and a divinely-appointed monarch. Islamic tradition generally holds that Solomon was the third king of Israel and was a just and wise ruler for the nation.
A Clip of the Roy Marsden Serial "Goodbye Mr Chips". It's sad that this brilliant adaptation produced by Barry Letts, Script editor Terrance Dicks, has never been released on DVD. This gives a brief flavour of what it was like. It was 6 episodes, partly shot on location, and was the most faithful adaptation of the book ever done - even the Robert Donat film took liberties with the book not present here.
Episode 1 of Airline Airline was a series produced by Yorkshire Television for the ITV network in 1982. It was created by Wilfred Greatorex and starred Roy Marsden as Jack Ruskin. I have left the commercial breaks intact for added nostalgia value! Leaving the RAF after World War II, Jack Ruskin decides to set up his own airline. Jack is prepared to bend every rule in the book to continue flying. Doing a deal with Ernie Cade to buy an aircraft, he enlists Peter Witney as co-pilot and Jock McEvoy as engineer. Cade is a notorious spiv, who can lay his hands on anything for the right price, Jacks dealings with Cade will be the cause of much trouble as the series unfolds. Other leading cast members were Polly Hemingway, Richard Heffer, Sean Scanlan and Terence Rigby. Episode 1 - Look After...
Based on H. Rider Haggard's timeless tale, King Solomon's Mines revolves around an adventurous mission for a treasure hidden in King Solomon's mines: Elizabeth Maitland hires American safari hunter Allan Quartermain to find her father - Sam Maitland, who has been kidnapped.
This is the first of a series of clips from the 1993 Inspector Dalgliesh mystery, Unnatural Causes, that deal with Commander Dalgliesh's relationship with book editor Deborah Riscoe (Mel Martin). Their affair has been going on for years, but partly because of his memories of his dead wife and partly because of the usual job conflicts that intrude on the lives of fictional police characters, the considerate but emotionally distant Dalgliesh is reluctant to commit, while Deborah toys with the possibility of taking her publishing company's offer of moving to their New York office. This is the first of 5 parts.

It’s not that I’m deliberately setting out to be horrific or to spill the blood too copiously, but the finding of the bodies is seen through the eyes of one of the characters. From a P D james adaptation (A Mind To Murder) back in the mid 1990s. Jerome Flynn played the baddie and ended up completely submerging in mud and had to be dragged out by Adam Dalgleish (Roy Marsden) who also get a bit muddy into the bargain. For those who like to see men in a load of mud!
