How is Ms. Marvel Changing Media for the Better? | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios
Popular media generally has a problem with representation. Fictional worlds are often designed by and for straight white males, and this can subtly affect how audiences view the real world. Comics are no exception, portraying muscular white males, or exaggerated expressions of the female form. But those traditions are being broken. One of the most exciting new characters breaking this mold is the new Ms. Marvel: Kamala Khan. Kamala is a teenage Pakistani-American muslim girl, a far cry from the comic pantheon of Captain Americas and Supermans. So is Kamala a step in the right direction for media representation? wikipedia Space Surveillance Telescope program The Space Surveillance Telescope program DARPA. The Space Surveillance Telescope program' (SST) is DARPA's ground based, advanced, optical system for detection and tracking of faint objects in space such as asteroids. It is also to be employed for space defense missions. The program is designed to advance, or expand, space situational awareness, and be able to quickly provide wide area search capability. Overview The large curved focal surface array sensors are considered to be an innovative design. It encompasses improvements in detection sensitivity, has short focal length, wide field of view, and improvements in step-and-settle abilities. SST detects, tracks, and can discern small, obscure objects, in deep space with a "wide field of view system". It is a single telescope with the dual abilities. First the telescope is sensitive enough to allow for detection, also, of small, dimly lit objects (low reflectivity). Second it is capable of quickly searching the visible sky. This combination is a difficult achievement in a single telescope design. It is an F/1.0 aperture telescope with a 3.5 meter primary mirror. It contains a curved, focal plane array. Multiple searches can be conducted from the ground multiple times throughout the night. As a telescope system, it can give precise locations of discovered objects, extrapolate the course of the object, and indicate the objects stability. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Space_Surveillance_Network- published: 14 Apr 2014

Turbulence: Watercolor + Magic
This is the first experiment by Dr. Woohoo in a series that explores the relationship between a robot + a artist with the objective of enhancing what is creatively possible by combining the strengths of each, while using watercolors as the natural media.
The following is a Q&A; with Dan Nosowitz:
"Can you tell me a little more about it?" – Dan
"This is the 1st in a series of experiments using different art related media that explore the relationship between the artist, myself in this case, and a robot. I'm searching for the sweet spot in the center between robots and artists, with the objective of enhancing what is creatively possible by tapping into the strengths of each. In the Turbulence project, the first steps towards developing a more enhanced system focus on one-way communication, from the code to the robot, and control.
I created the original design using a generative design application that I developed, with some early help from Jay Moretti, which runs in the browser and is based on Canvas and PaperJS (http://paperjs.org/). In Chrome, I began with a single hexagon and applied a 2d plane symmetrical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plane_symmetry) layout pattern to it which creates copies and distributes the hexagons in a prescribed fashion. E.g., for this image, I used the P1 pattern which translates the hexagon in 2 directions.
With the basic layout of the hexagons in place, I then generate a Perlin Noise image as a hidden layer underneath the hexagons in order to determine the colors. For each hexagon, I sample the greyscale value from a single pixel from the Perlin Noise image at the center point of the hexagon. If it's above 50%, meaning that it's brighter, it's red. If it's below 50% and is a darker pixel, the color is blue.
When I'm content with the final look and feel, I export all of the points for all of the hexagons as a CSV file. This CSV file is then imported in a Processing (http://processing.org/) robot controller application – co-developed by Stephane Bersot – that converts it into a script that the robot will understand and sends that script to the robot. The robot, upon receiving it, follows the instructions until it's finished painting." – Woohoo
What's the robot being used?
The robot is Universal Robot's UR10 and the gripper is a 2-finger Robotiq 85.
Why does it draw in that way?
In this video, I'm using 3-4 degrees of freedom (DoF) out of 6 potential, so the gripper and brush are always perpendicular to the canvas. Simply put, controlling 3-4 DoF is easy to accomplish, 6 is much more challenging, but not impossible. Another way to look at it... the robot has 3 wrists in addition to an elbow, shoulder and torso that need to be controlled in perfect synchronization! With 6 DoF, the major advantage will be brushstrokes that are more gesture based, allowing for a closer simulation of a brushstroke. The next experiment will include all 6 DoF.
What was the inspiration for the project?
For the majority of my career, I have focused on developing systems and software applications, plug-ins and scripts that extend what is creatively possible and most of the time they involved emulating natural media. Adding a robot into the equation allows me to return to the past with a modern approach, which to me is the best of both worlds.
From an art perspective, Kandinsky and Josef Albers are as important as Edward Ihnatowicz's The Senster (http://www.senster.com/ihnatowicz/) and Jean Tinguely's drawing machines (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZpEYLa9PGs).
From a literary perspective, Herbert Weiner's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norbert_Wiener) work on Cybernetics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybernetics) and specifically the feedback loop is critical in my work. It's not evident in this piece because the feedback from the robot is not being tapped into, but it's there and will be included in future experiments.
The inspiration for the hexagon comes from here: http://instagram.com/p/Z0mAYimluN/
The inspiration for the plane symmetry comes from the San Ildefonso Pueblo's ceramic designs, which I found throughout New Mexico and in Dorothy K. Washburn and Donald W. Crowe's exceptional book, Symmetries of Culture: Theory and Practice of Plane Pattern Analysis (http://www.amazon.com/Symmetries-Culture-Practice-Pattern-Analysis).
From a software perspective, I was also inspired to develop the generative browser application because I wasn't able to match the functionality I wanted in applications like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape and was curious to see how far away from desktop applications and into the cloud I could move and discover the current limits of cloud base applications. I have been a fan of PaperJS and the developers behind it – Jürg Lehni & Jonathan Puckey – so it was the perfect tool for me to use for this experiment.

We The People | Theatrical Trailer
We The People is a nonpartisan film about fixing the economy and bringing greatness back to our country. This is a movement for us. We are making this film to save our children's future and yours. We know there are millions of others just like us. We need to come together and be proactive. We need to bring back morals and ethics. We need to become a great nation once again.
If you are inspired, help us promote this film so that we can reach everyone. Facebook, twitter, email, friends in media, entertainment, finance, science, history, politics, and anyone that can help.

The official webpage is : http://wtpmovie.com/
We have a Facebook Fan Page We The People Movie : http://www.facebook.com/WtPmovie
Its our home for daily conversation on solutions, ideas, and inspiration for the film.
We (the filmmakers) have been under a lot of pressure working diligently on this film since October 2011 and balancing family and work. We are waiting approval from kickstarter.com any day. Once we launch Kickstarter we only have 33 days to raise about $200,000. This is the bare minimum to make our movie. Our real goal is $1,000,000+
The key is for this to be successful is sharing the links.
You can hear more about what we stand for and how we can make a great movie on our Kickstarter fund raiser (coming soon). We have added filmmaker commentaries on the kickstarter video.
Documentary Outline :
As of 2012, America is at the brink of collapse, despite what the mainstream media feeds the public. We will show you how money and politics are the root of the problem. Through meticulous research and eye-opening interviews with politicians, journalists, financial professionals, and academics, etc. this film examines over 200 years of corruption and lets the audience judge through a center-driven, non-partisan view what is really happening behind the curtain. The film will educate the nation’s people about the power they hold in numbers, but rarely use when needed the most. Morality and accountability is reinforced over and over again to inspire the American people to put their governments ethics back in line, remove the money from politics, and dramatically lower the gap between the rich and poor. The middle class is the working engine that drives this nation and it is being extracted at an historic rate. This movie is a motivational tool and a call to action for all Americans to stand together and face the historic challenges ahead of them so that we can all can bring back the American Spirit and be prosperous once again.

Media Misleads the Electorate
Media Misleads the Electorate
In typical fashion, most American media misrepresent the political situation in Washington. Take a current high-profile report in The Hill, a noted Washington newspaper. It talks about the Republican Party Establishment not wanting Senators Rand Paul, Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz to run for president because they don't appeal to a wide enough base of voters to have a good shot at the Oval Office. Many GOP Senators would prefer a current or former state governor over those three maverick senators. The Hill added, "Those [maverick] Senators have created a buzz among conservative activists, but their colleagues in the upper chamber are eager to support a nominee from outside Washington with a record of attracting independents and centrist Democrats." What The Hill and other Beltway media don't say is that independently-minded voters played a role in getting underdog Senators like Paul and Cruz into the Senate in the first place. Tea Party voters come to mind. Americans are becoming disenchanted with the two-party system that often acts like two wings of one party. As people distance themselves from this duopoly, they either vote for third-party candidates, or they vote for mavericks within the existing dominant parties. Sometimes they don't vote at all.And it's not hard to imagine a centrist Democrat voting for, say, Rand Paul for president over concerns about perpetual war. After all, Democrat Barack Obama has become the princely president of drone attacks—which Senator Paul protested in his noted filibuster last year. Logically, it's no big leap for a disgusted anti-war Democrat to consider voting for someone like Paul for president. The orthodox press also claims that Senators make bad presidential candidates and governors make good ones. Well, the meddlesome Trilateral Commission handpicked Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter to be president in the 1970s. And serious scandals followed former Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton from Little Rock to the Oval Office. Yes, these governors were "elect-able." BUT they had hidden agendas. When Clinton assumed office, he allowed Chinese money to bribe him into sharing sensitive U.S. military technology with China. He also gave America the NAFTA accord. Rich Galen, who advised former Sen. Fred Thompson in his 2008 presidential campaign, remarked, "Senators make uniquely dreadful candidates. . . . Governors have to run very complex organizations, and they know how to do it." Galen apparently forgot the less-than-stellar performance of former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election. Longtime Texas Gov. Rick Perry fared even worse. Jon Huntsman, a former Utah governor, barely got past first base and has since joined the Trilateral Commission. However, John F. Kennedy was a Senator when he was elected president, although on the Democratic ticket. His brother Bobby was also a Senator before an assassin ended his bright presidential prospects. And populist Sen. Huey Long of Louisiana was well on his way to the White House in the 1930s when a bullet ended his bid. In reality, modern-day Republicans are grasping at straws because the party has so little of substance to offer the voters. Besides, we need good men and women in the national legislature, too. It's become something of an American myth that a single person in the White House should be a "Mr. Fix-It" who can cure all the nation's problems with a few pen-strokes. While many of us hope a Great Emancipator will appear, a good legislature can restrain a bad president and help a good one.
