George Templeton Strong (Symphony No. 2)
Perhaps one of the most convincing of the American composers of Romantic era music, George Templeton Strong remains something of an enigmatic figure. Or at the very least, his music deserves this designation. Spend some time reviewing his list of works on Wikipedia, and you will see that it is fairly large. It's also somewhat frustrating to read. So many of the items in that list are either labeled as being unpublished or completely lost. Strong considered himself an American composer, but he remained in Switzerland for the later years of his life. I present his second symphony in G minor (1887), a work thoroughly romantic. The music was inspired by Motte Fouqué's "Sintram and His Companions". The subtitle of the symphony is "Sintram: The Struggle of Mankind Against the Powers of Evil".
