Police say multiple people have been shot on the Seattle Pacific University campus.
SEATTLE (AP) - A lone gunman armed with a shotgun opened fire Thursday in a building at a small Seattle university, fatally wounding one person before a student subdued him with pepper spray as he tried to reload, Seattle police said.

A student building monitor at Seattle Pacific University disarmed the gunman after he entered the foyer at Otto Miller Hall, and several other students jumped on top of him and pinned him down until police officers arrived, police said.

SEATTLE -- At least six people have been shot at Seattle Pacific University and a suspect is in custody, Seattle police said.

Seattle fire officials say a gunman is also wounded.
The victims\' conditions are not known, but Seattle Fire officials say they have taken four of the wounded to Harborview Medical Center with wounds varying from minor to life threatening.

Seattle police originally said they were looking for a second attacker but have since determined there is only the one suspect.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m. near the intersection of 3rd Ave. West and West Nickerson Street. Police report two victims were at Otto Miller Hall.

Witness Briana Clarke was inside Otto Miller Hall when the shots rang out. She was still unsure what was happening when she saw students running down the halls.

On Sunday, a referendum was finally held by the breakaway Donetsk People\'s Republic in eastern Ukraine on whether to declare independence. Polling stations were set up all over the city. With no independent monitors present, the DPR used locals to ensure that the vote was free and fair — a provision that hardly inspired confidence.

VICE News correspondent Henry Langston visited Donetsk to witness the ballot and ask people what they were voting for, but he and his crew quickly ran afoul of masked gunmen who were patrolling the station. They forced the crew inside the occupied administration building, where they were detained, searched, and interrogated for three hours before being allowed to leave. The experience offered some indication of what press freedom in the DPR would look like should it ever become independent.

Preliminary results announced around midnight showed a voter turnout of 74 percent, of which 89 percent voted yes. While seemingly suspect, the results were cheered by the DPR, which declared itself an independent state on Monday. But people are unsure of what the future holds for the separatist ambitions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Just last month, a poll showed that only 18 percent of people in eastern Ukraine wanted independence. With the Ukrainian government refusing to recognize the referendum and Russia backing its result, the next few days could prove pivotal for the entire region.

Bodies Of 800 Babies Found In Septic Tank In Ireland

Outrage over the reported discovery of the bodies of almost 800 children at a former home for unmarried mothers run by nuns in Ireland prompted calls Wednesday for a full investigation.
The children whose remains have apparently been found in Tuam, in County Galway, are believed to have died between 1925 and 1961, according to local media reports.
The grim discovery was highlighted in a front-page report in the Irish Mail on Sunday, which cited the efforts of local historian Catherine Corless to research the burial sites of 796 children listed as having died at the home, which was run by the Sisters of Bon Secours.
According to the newspaper, Corless believes their remains are all buried in the unmarked mass grave next to the place where the home once stood. Local children stumbled upon the grave in the 1970s, local media reported, but the site was never examined afterward.

The victims' conditions are not known, but Seattle Fire officials say they have taken four of the wounded to Harborview Medical Center with wounds varying from minor to life threatening. "I first heard two muffled shots that I thought were two helium balloons," she said. Clarke then said she saw five to seven injured students inside the building. When she went outside, she saw several more bloodied students. "Seeing as how this is on a very, very safe campus in a very safe area made it much more shocking at first," she said. University counselor Karen Altus was in her office -- less than a block from the crime scene -- when she got an alert about the shooting. "I'm in my office with four students with the blinds closed. The we're sitting on the floor with the door locked, very scared," she said. Police officials say one person was in custody on the SPU campus and that officers and medics were on the scene. SPU officials report the campus is on lockdown and police are still searching campus for any potential additional suspects. The situation is still fluid and more details will be posted as they become available. raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU raw footage cellphone video 7 shot at Seattle Pacific University #spushooting #sprayforSPU

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News On Sunday, a referendum was finally held by the breakaway Donetsk People's Republic in eastern Ukraine on whether to declare independence. Bodies Of 800 Babies Found In Septic Tank In Ireland Outrage over the reported discovery of the bodies of almost 800 children at a former home for unmarried mothers run by nuns in Ireland prompted calls Wednesday for a full investigation.
