Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded

Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded is an epistolary novel by Samuel Richardson, first published in 1740. It tells the story of a beautiful 15-year-old maidservant named Pamela Andrews, whose country landowner master, Mr. B, makes unwanted advances towards her after the death of his mother. After Mr. B attempts unsuccessfully to seduce and rape her, he eventually rewards her virtue when he sincerely proposes an equitable marriage to her. In the novel's second part, Pamela marries Mr. B and tries to acclimatize to upper-class society. The story, a best-seller of its time, was very widely read but was also criticized for its perceived licentiousness.

Plot summary

Volume 1

Pamela Andrews is a pious, innocent fifteen-year-old who works as Lady B's maidservant in Bedfordshire. The novel starts after Lady B has died, when her son, the squire Mr. B, begins to pay Pamela more attention, first giving her his mother's clothes, then trying to seduce her in the Summer House. When he wants to pay her to keep the attempt secret, she refuses and tells Mrs. Jervis, the housekeeper, her best friend at the house. Undaunted, he hides in her closet and pops out and tries to kiss her as she undresses for bed. Pamela debates returning to her impoverished parents to preserve her innocence, but remains undecided.

Pamela (song)

"Pamela" is a pop rock song written by David Paich and Joseph Williams for the 1988 Toto album The Seventh One. It was the first single from the album, and it peaked at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart becoming their final US hit to date.

Background

The song was written by David Paich and Joseph Williams. Paich had first written the chorus, music and words, including the name, "Pamela". Williams happened to have a girlfriend at the time named "Pamela", and had already written a song for her by the same name. The chorus of Williams's song was used in the bridge, and Williams wrote new words and melody for the verses as well.

Long is a surname and may refer to many people.

The Longs in Ireland got their names from a number of different origins. Some are of English, Scottish, and Norman descent. The Norman de Long and le Lung arrived in the 11th century with the Anglo-Norman conquest in 1066 AD and established in numerous locations. A number of Irish Gaelic septs of O'Longain and O'Longaig contributed to the origin of the name. One sept was located in County Armagh, but the greater numbers were in County Cork at Cannovee and also at Moviddy. The Longs lost all their lands in the upheavals of the 17th century. The name is found in its greatest numbers in Munster, County Cork being most favored. The line of direct descent from the last elected chieftain to the present day is unbroken — the official title is styled "O'Long of Carrenelongy". The Irish origin also comes from "Lonklin" from county Tipperary and Dublin.

Longa (music)

A longa (pl. longe or longae) or long is a musical note that could be either twice or three times as long as a breve (Am.: double whole note, or double note), four or six times as long as a semibreve (Am.: whole note), that appears in early music. The number of breves in a long was determined by the "modus" or "mode" of a passage. Sections in perfect mode used three breves to the long while sections in imperfect mode used two breves to the long. Imperfect longs, worth two breves, existed in perfect mode from the earliest sources (late 12th century), while the fourteenth century saw the introduction of perfect longs, worth three breves, in imperfect mode through the use of dots of addition (puncti additiones).

Prior to the innovations of Franco of Cologne in the mid-thirteenth century, the value of the longa was in common usage in both theoretical and practical sources but appeared primarily in ligatures, or two or more notes joined together. A ligature that began with a longa was said to lack "propriety", while ligatures ending with a longa possessed "perfection", since in the view of that era a "proper and perfect" rhyhmic sequence was the succession of a brevis followed by a longa, justified by the fact that the ligature representing this rhythm is written the same way as a plainchant ligature (a different usage of the term from above). As a result, there were four possible ligature types: those beginning with a brevis and ending with a longa, which had both propriety and perfection, the reverse, which had neither, those both beginning and ending with a longa, which lacked propriety but had perfection, and those beginning and ending with a brevis, which were proper but not perfect (Apel 1961, 88–89, 261–62, 312–14; Reckow 1967, 4. Two longae, rarely three, had the combined value of a maxima. The theoretical value of a maximodus perfectus could only be written with three longae or a maxima plus a longa (Apel 1961, 124, 328, 440).
