About Physiology
About Physiology
Physiology is the science of the normal functions and phenomena of living things. Physiologists perform experiments to figure out the details of how individual components of the body work, and also how they all link together to help us function. Click here for more information on how to study Physiology at UCC. The Department is part of the School of Medicine which sits in the College of Medicine & Health. Staff of the Department contribute to the teaching of wide variety of degree programmes in the College of Medicine & Health including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. In addition, science students and occasional medical students register for a BSc in Physiology via CK402 Biological and Chemical Sciences (College of Science, Engineering and Food Science). A further 15 students are currently registered for post-graduate degrees (MSc, MD, and PhD) within the department. Full details of modules currently offered can be seen at http://www.ucc.ie/modules/descriptions/page058.html#PL1010. Full details of degree programmes can be found at www.ucc.ie/academic/calendar/.- published: 19 Dec 2013

Dance your PhD 2013 - Mood & Addiction
In this video we illustrate the topic of my thesis, which is about the interaction between Mood & Addiction.
Addiction has an enormous burden. In Europe alone, an approximate 1.1 million individuals sought treatment for their addiction in 2010.
Your mood and vulnerability to become addicted are tightly intertwined. But what in the brain is responsible for this interaction?
We have selected a target – the hormone ghrelin – to investigate whether it is responsible for the interaction between mood and addiction. We selected ghrelin because it is increased in response to stress and that it also increases reward seeking.
In our laboratory, we investigate whether dialing down ghrelin signaling in the brain will protect the brain against the effect of chronic stress in animals that display stress induced reward seeking.
Understanding ghrelin’s function will build towards understanding why people get addicted, which could enable novel treatment opportunities.

Hornet/Blinkink director Peter Sluszka along with Leo Burnett London has new a stop-frame animation out, a celebration of Special K's first recipe change in over 30 years. Laced together with impeccable design and sensitivity, animation virtuoso Peter Sluszka uses the meticulous art of origami (a favorite of objects to animate) in his latest stop-motion piece. Butterflies, birds and the famous Special K red dress girl (recreated in paper) take form through intricate folds, creases and pleats to symbolize Special K's transformation.
Nearly every little fold of origami and papercraft was brought to life in-camera at Hornet's shooting stage in Brooklyn. To get a sense of all the subtle details that went into this spot, be sure to watch the making of.

Wisniewski & Cryan on Christie's Decision to Kill Hudson River Commuter Rail Tunnel Project
In this video press release, Assembly Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee Chairman John S. Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) and Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Cryan (D-Union) lambaste Gov. Chris Christie for pulling the plug on the single largest public works project in the country - building a second commuter rail tunnel under the Hudson River.
The $8.7 billion project - funded by the federal government, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the State of New Jersey - would have created 6,000 jobs, more than doubled the current capacity of trains into NYC from NJ and generated approximately $45 billion in new economic activity over the life of the project.

UCC in 20 seconds
UCC is this year a finalist in the Times Higher Education World Rankings film competition. We received a special commendation for the above film: http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/news/the-world-university-rankings-video-contest-2013-winner-announced/2009116.article There are 6 other finalist: Lappeenranta University of Technology-Finland. Osaka University-Japan Plymouth University-England University of Newcastle-Australia Bangor University-Wales Nanyang Technological University-Singapore UCC's entry covers the crucial aspect of Outreach. Using Declan's Magic show, part of the UCCPLUS+ programme, as the outreach event. Working with secondary schools, the UCC PLUS+ Programme (formerly Access Programme) seeks to target students and to provide motivational and educational assistance to them throughout their secondary schooling to enhance their ability to compete for third level places. Currently there are a number of schools and colleges of further education linked to the Programme for this purpose. The short was made by Stephen Bean, AVMS cameraman, assisted by Job Bridge intern Elaine Lucy. (B-roll) Entries can cover any aspect of the institution beyond the 13 performance indicators used to create the prestigious THEWorld University Rankings, from the quality of research or teaching, to the social and cultural life, employment opportunities, or the campus environment. The most inspiring and entertaining videos, presented in the most creative and innovative ways, and those videos which capture the imagination of the higher education community on social networks, are likely to find favour with our judges. What makes a university special can be very personal to the individual, and in last year's competition, 14 videos made the final short list, representing institutions in Australia, Canada, China, Estonia, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, the US and UK. Filmmakers were asked to describe what makes their institution world class. Last year's shortlisted videos exceeded 30,000 views on YouTube, and Times Higher Education magazine's 2013/4 competition is designed to celebrate excellence across all of higher education globally and to mark the publication of the 2013-14 World University Rankings.- published: 19 Nov 2013
