Balancing Ecuador's conservation and economy
Ecuador's government has now opened up the Yasuni area -- deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle -- to oil drilling. But, as Michelle Begue reports, the challenge will be striking a balance between Ecuador's economy and environment. Una Fe Infinita: An Infinite Faith
In the small mountain town of San Bartolomé sits a small wooden building. Layered between a small dirt road and a gorgeous valley, the building is half workshop, half home. The workshop belongs to Don Uyaguari, one of many guitar makers in southern Ecuador. The rest of the home is occupied by his family - his sons and daughters, their sons and daughters.
Don has been working with guitars since he was a small child, learning from his father in the same shop. While his father was self-taught, and not a traditional guitar maker, Don has made a living out of working with his hands and building these instruments.
“A mal tiempo, buena cara” – In bad times, a face held high. Although Don has faced serious financial troubles and could face losing his home, Don has been persistent, and makes whatever sacrifices are necessary to help his family survive. No matter what the situation, Don always presents himself with valor and good spirits, never letting disappointment show or defeat him.
He finds the strength to continue on with his craftsmanship through his ever-present faith. The idea of an ever-lasting faith provides a unity for all Ecuadorians—an intimate bond of hope.
--
The film serves to tell Don's story, and highlight his guitars. Guitars allow him to use his hands, and craft with his soul, while also making an instrument others will use to make music – a language that transcends all boundaries of the world.
While Don's guitars are some of the best in the Andean region of Ecuador, he struggles to sell the guitars and support his family. The economy of Ecuador doesn't allow for the guitars to be sold for what they're truly worth.
Don has begun reaching out to the international community, and through his new company, Andean Guitars, he will be able to market to the world, and hopefully earn the money he works for daily.

FORESTS: The Heart of a Green Economy
Forests provide livelihoods for up to 1 billion people and contribute trillions of USD to the global economy through products and services. Yet in some regions, deforestation continues at an alarming rate. As REDD+ aims to address market, policy, and institutional failures that undervalue the climate change mitigation service provided by the forest ecosystem, while protecting the rights of those who rely on the forests, there are clear links between REDD+ objectives and green economy objectives, both of which call for a change in the business-as-usual economic development in order to slow the loss of natural capital. This short film feature examples from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia and Ecuador, highlighting the potential challenges and opportunities of including REDD+ in the transition to a green economy.

Chile to Kili: Driving change from the seat of a bicycle
The goal: Ride from Chile to Kilimanjaro
Elvis Munis, 25, of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, is bicycling around the world to raise awareness about environmental issues and funds for scholarships to support students in Africa to study resource management in college.
The distance of this trip is about 80 000kms or 50 000m and will traverse some 41 countries completely unsupported.
Elvis’s journey started in Santiago, Chile and takes him through Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Canada, Alaska, across the Bearing Sea (by any means) into Russia, Mongolia, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, across the Caspian Sea into Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and ending at the foot of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania—Elvis's home.
Elvis, and any riders who dare to join him, must locate and carry their own food, shelter, and resources throughout the trip. Most nights will be spent camping in tents or staying with local contacts.
If you’re on his route and can offer a place to stay or a hot meal, drop us a line or if you want to have a semi-real-time chat with Elvis, or just tell him "good luck", post a little something here.
Inspiration:
This ride was inspired by the Gandhi’s famous quotation- “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
This has been a long-time favorite quote of both event organizers and triggered a conversation on the shores of Zanzibar that lead to the creation of this life-altering event.
Change must come from the inside. Elvis, a 25 year old Tanzanian naturalist and student, identifies one of the major problems in his country as the lack of opportunity for Tanzanians to obtain the education necessary to manage their own natural resources. Tanzania’s economy is dependent on conservation-based tourism, yet management decisions and safari companies tend to be run by foreigners. This ride will raise awareness about the lack of educational opportunities and therefor lack of upward mobility afforded to Tanzanian citizens.
By volunteering to bike around the world in an effort to raise money for a scholarship program for conservation students like himself, Elvis truly is “being” the change he wants to see.

Pilataxi Cesar explains and develops on camera political and spiritual philosophy of Kichwa community. From before the coup d'etat of 1990, the indigenous movement in Ecuador is struggling to write their own counter-hegemonic and subaltern history, the concept "summak kawsay" is the cornerstone.
“The indigenous view of the world - not just in the Andes but in different cultures like the Mayas, Hindus and so on - is an articulated unfragmented view. There are four dimensions: the spiritual part, “Munay”, the political and organisational part, “Aity”, the productive part to do with economy, “Ruray” and then knowledge, education, “Yachay”... But these don't act separately, they act all at once, they interact and complement each other and they're not separate. All this interrelatedness finds completion in “Summak Kawsay”, the fulfilment of a well-rounded life. That's how the world is conceived, which is why the concept of development (economic only, in other words progress) doesn't exist for us...

Ecuador: Integrating e-Learning into the Classroom (Learning World S4E23, 2/3)
The population of Riobamba, in Ecuador is around 200,000 and the local economy relies mainly on agriculture. In one school, they have integrated online e-learning tools into the classroom. It is considered that for e-learning to work, teachers have to embrace it, computer labs have to be available and both teachers and students have to harness their creativity. In this center, students use the internet and have access to software like Exam Time which helps them put material into a learning context, create mind maps, and self-assess. Another advantage is that students' work is always available online which allows for collaboration.
