Millions of Syrians are trapped in hard to reach or besieged areas across Syria. On Thursday, 6 February, the parties to the conflict in Syria agreed under UN auspices to a three day 'humanitarian pause' in the Old City of Homs in order to allow the evacuation of the critically ill, women and children and the delivery of aid supplies to some 2,500 people trapped in the city for the past one year and eight months. UN agencies, including the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), working alongside the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), met the evacuees, provided them with food and medical care. Besieged Homs Described as "Jungle of Monsters" by Evacuated Civilians

Syrian civilians are now evacuating the besieged districts of Homs from the Old City according to a UN-sponsored agreement on a shaky ceasefire to allow for humanitarian aid to get in and let civilians out. Some of the civilians who left gave their testimony of what they experienced when living under the rule of the armed militants. "It is truly a jungle of monsters that we used to live in," says a mother who was able to leave with her family. According to those civilians, the militants would take any food for themselves and not share it with the civilians, who were used as human shields. Source: Sama TV (Syria)

It has been the scene of intense fighting and a government seige for weeks now, but in a glimmer of hope, a three-day ceasefire is under effect. We have already seen dozens of people being allowed out, and food aid is slowly trickling in. It is part of a UN-brokered deal between the government and opposition fighters. Up to 2,500 civilians are said to be living in squalid conditions in the city, many are starving and now some are leaving, but not everyone will have that luxury. Men between the ages of 15 and 55 are forced to stay put.
